salford1: Alright. This is reassuring. Thing I've seriously been considering this migration to Canada of a thing, in fact my brother and his family av just been given PR in SK and are scheduled to leave this week, and this has really spured me on to try as well. I read Geology in the uni but I have no working experience in that field, you know the way naija is and how difficult it is to get employment in the oil sector. But I have about 3 years combined experience in Logistics, distribution and sales. What are my chances of getting in?? |

Hello Seniors, This thread has been very helpful, many thanks to all the contributors. I have received my ppr and sent my passport, awaiting COPR. Please I will appreciate answers to my questions below; 1. My child will be 4 in dec, I understand he is qualified for kindergarten. Please is there a fixed time he has to resume or can he just join anytime we arrive? We are thinking of leaving mid-september. 2. Are catholic schools totally free for kindergartners? We are not catholics though. I'm sorry if these have been answered before now. Thanks again. |

Newbeecey: Yeah, you are right, your planning needs to be really tight since you will be paying rent and other utilities almost immediately you land. I am searching for answers too but I am very positive all will be well 1 Like 1 Share |

@Salford1 mentioned something about Pof and how it can make or break one and, when you think about it,it does make sense. In fact, the way the Canadian Migration system is structured Pof is a prerequisite to PR.Probably because they know that the first few weeks or months before one stabilizes may be tough and you need all the funds you can get whilst job hunting and what not. Most folks 'play smart' by circumventing the system put in place for their own good .Some have 0% 'true ownership' of the POF sheet they submit and then they blame the system when finances become a bit tight. I know all fingers are not equal but ,if we try to understand the spirit behind the requirement put in place by IRCC and the Canadian Government as it relates to Skilled Worker immigration and ,we try to abide with same as @Maternal is always quick to point out, it might also ease some tension from the transition while hoping on God to bless our efforts and grant us favour. 19 Likes |

Thanks and Amen. Trying not to let all these "small distractions" dissuade me from providing a better future for my kids. At least as much as lies within my power. We then leave the rest to God wholesomegrace: 4 Likes |

Beeea: You started well with to each there own..but comparing 250K and 1k dollars..did u consider the cost of living in Canada?..So if you make 250k monthly in Naija ..at least if u get 3k-4k after tax o o o and othe deductable its ok. If you working as a professional in Nigeria, God forbid you come to Canada and do menial job, its forward ever. Another issue , Nairaland helps a lot and adds extra , gives amazing information but if you want to make descions based on this alone.. then I dont know. I know its easier to ask people but you will be better prepared with your own research...and the whole idea of being an adult is taking responsibilities for your decision..something the woman did not understand. ; 10 Likes |

Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by Beeea: 7:49pm On May 09, 2018 |
Fusion23: Comparing the amounts with regards to cost might not have been the best. On the other hand, some professionals have had to go the menial job route when they first arrive, before finding their footing- that is why it is called survival jobs. I know a medical doctor whose first job in Canada was as a cashier, now he's practising and earning in the six figures. For the Op, do your research well, there are more opportunities in Canada than in Nigeria, and as others have said, have your POF as it might determine whether you will have to take up survival jobs or not. In all, think about the future of your family. 13 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by salford1: 8:41pm On May 09, 2018 |
Beeea:You are correct. Trying not to be a bearer of unpleasant news, but If one is in a field that requires passing regulatory requirement, then the chances of survival/menial job is high irrespective of pof or not. I read somewhere that it is better to have an heart attack in a cab because the chances are high that the cab driver is a doctor. Maybe be that statement is a joke, but it might not be too far from the truth. I dont know about accounts, lawyers or other regulated careers, but Engineering and Health related careers takes several months or years to become qualified. The POF would help for maybe 6 months to a year depending on how much an immigrants land with. However, not all is gloomy because if the immigrant passes the regulatory exams, humbles himself, and persevere, the rewards are indeed awesome due to the high pay and benefits asscotiated with such professions. Just as you mentioned. Those in unregulated professions can do well with enough pof to last them for atleast 6months till their desired job comes along. 11 Likes 3 Shares |

In addition, what kind of job(s) would actually be considered as survival job. I think it's best to use "transition job". What someone would call a survival or transition job could also be termed as another person's career job. 15 Likes |
