Rohr Wants Super Eagles In Uyo Camp By May 22 For Congo Friendly
May 10, 2018 8:53 pm

Ahead of the farewell friendly match with DR Congo before the team heads off to the World Cup, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has directed that all the players invited for camping must report at the Uyo base in Akwa Ibom State on May 22 or face sanctions, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Official sources told CSN that the coach wants the team to have at least five days quality training before they depart for Port Harcourt where they will play DR Congo at the Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium.

“The idea to camp in Uyo is to formally thank the people and government of Akws Ibom for hosting the Super Eagles all through the qualifying matches of the World Cup. We have to open our camp in Uyo in appreciation of their moral and financial support,” one of the sources told CSN.

“The coach has warned that he will not tolerate late comers to the camp which opens on May 21st for officials and 22nd for players. Rohr wants to hit the ground running with the World Cup preparation and has urged the players to report on time.”

The players and their officials led by Rohr will pay a courtesy call on the state governor Udom Emmanuel and if possible play a test game with a local side before leaving for Port Harcourt on May 26 for the Congo DR friendly match billed for May 28.

Iheanacho Vows To Work Harder After Goal Vs Arsenal
May 10, 2018 7:28 pm

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho is keen to revive his career at Leicester City after scoring in the Foxes’ 3-1 Premier League win over Arsenal on Wednesday, Complete Sports reports

The Nigeria international, who is hoping to make coach Gernot Rohr’s squad to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, scored the first goal for the former Premier League champions on Wednesday in the 14 th minute before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized in the 53 rdminute.
Both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez added one each in the 76th and 90th minutes respectively to beat the Gunners 3-1.

“That’s what every player wants, to play. When you work hard, you get your chance, so I’ll keep working hard and see what’s next,” Iheanacho told Sky Sports.
“It’s always good to be involved in a good sport, with a great team. We started well and we got the first goal. We had the confidence and the momentum and we finished well.

“It was important to get the first goal to get us going and get our confidence back for the last couple of games. I think we’ve got our confidence back now, we’re strong and we’ll keep going. It was a great goal, good composure, a good assist from Fouss [Fousseni Diabata] and a good finish.”

Leicester City will face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in their last game of the season and the Nigerian will be looking forward to making an impressive appearnace in the game.

The Foxes are ninth in the EPL table with 47 points from 37 games while Tottenham Hotspur are third with 74 points with same number of games.

Rohr Wary Of El Clásico Croatians Modric, Rakitic, Kovacic
May 10, 2018 6:39 pm

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is wary of the threat the Real Madrid duo of Luka Modrid and Mateo Kovacic as well as Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic will pose when the
Super Eagles play the Vatreni of Croatia in their opening 2018 FIFA World Cup game on June 16 at the 35,000 capacity Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Rohr believes the three players are the pivot on which coach Zlatko Dalic has built his team on and the Nigeria boss sees that as a clear and considerable area of strength. The Nigeria boss stresses that his Super Eagles must be set up in their opening match to combat “one of the best midfields” in the competition. If fit, Modric, Rakitic and Kovacic look likely to form a formidable triumvirate in central midfield for Croatia at Russia 2018. Add in competition for places from the likes of Fiorentina’s Milan Badelj and Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic, and it is no wonder that this department of Dalic’s team is held in such high regard.

Dalic believes Modric gives the team the fuel to perform on the field.

The coach said: “He is our best player – he’s the engine that makes us go. He’s also a captain who leads by example. He always gives his maximum, he sets high standards with his attitude, aggression and energy on the pitch, and with his behaviour off it.

”While Rakitic has an incredible season in the LaLiga, helping Barcelona set an unbeaten run in the 35 games the has played so far this term, Kovacic is described as the future of the Croatia team, described as an incredible talent.”

Onazi: Super Eagles Ready For England Showdown, Other Friendlies
May 10, 2018 6:05 pm

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has stated that the team will be ready for the pre-World Cup friendlies against the Democratic Republic of Congo, England and Czech Republic, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The three-time African champions will entertain the DR Congo in Port Harcourt on May 28 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka, Port Harcourt before facing the Three Lions of England in a high-profile friendly on June 2nd at the Wembley Stadium.

Gernot Rohr’s men will also face Czech Republic on June 6 at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, just outside Vienna.

“We are not focusing on any particular game; we are getting ready to face all the teams that we have to play before the World Cup. It is the right mentality to approach the games,” the Trabzonspor star told the official website of the Nigeria Football Federation.

“I have been asked several questions about the match against England, but I tell people that the England match is very important, just like the other matches that we have to play.

“What is key for us is to get into the right psychological state to confront every opposition that lie ahead, including those that will be waiting at the FIFA World Cup.”

The Super Eagles enjoyed a stellar qualifying campaign navigating their way through a tough qualifying group that had Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon.

They have also defeated Argentina and Poland in tune-up games ahead of the World Cup.

“There is nothing like over-confidence. What I can say is that we are a very ambitious team and we will always be ready to play any team,” Onazi added.

“Yes, we defeated Argentina and Poland, but that has not in any way generated feelings of over-confidence in the camp. We are focused and have our heads on our shoulders.

“For us, humility and hard work will be the winning words going ahead. Our preparation is going on well and we are happy with that.

“At the World Cup, we will come up against different teams with different styles and approaches of play. It is important that we are adequately prepared and we appreciate the games that the NFF has lined up for us.”
The Super Eagles will face Iceland, Croatia and Argentina in Group D at the World Cup in June.

Etebo Out Of Las Palmas, Eibar La Liga Clash Due To Injury
May 10, 2018 2:01 pm

Nigeria midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has been omitted from Las Palmas’ squad for Saturday’s Spanish LaLiga clash against Eibar, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Etebo has struggled to train all week following a muscle problem, with the club confirming the injury on their official website on Tuesday.

He has now been omitted from Las Palmas’ 18-man squad for the game against Eibar after failing to recover from the injury.
His international teammate, Imoh Ezekiel, however made the squad for the game.

Former Warri Wolves player Etebo joined Las Palmas on loan from Portuguese club CD Feirense in January.

Etebo has made 13 league appearances for Las Palmas since the switch.

The player will hope the injury is not severe enough to stop him from attending the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with some of his teammates already battling to be fit for the mundial.

The duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Tyronne Ebuehi are currently out with injury, while centre-back Leon Balogun and Henry Onyekuru have just returned from spells out.

I smile when I read people here say we will be outclassed in the midfield position when we play Croatia. We'll match their midfield and probably come out on top in the midfield battle. Factoring in Ndidi's work rate being arguably the best in Europe and Mikel being a BIG GAME player, any other person that completes the midfield trio would do. You guys should take a chill pill. Don't know why I feel so upbeat about our outing in this Mundial. Could be sheer sentiment or true optimism.

The Croats are good individually but the trio of Modric, Rakitic and Kovcic don't have chemistry. Reminds me of England that once had Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard and did not gel together. The Croats problem is they have a slow back line which we should exploit.

Baba, I don't argue too much. Nigeria to beat Croatia by 2-3 goals. Bulgaria had better in 1994. What was the outcome?
