Of course - you don't understands - that is why Kenya ranks globally at position 42 - in WB's Logistic performance index - beating many developed countries - and is only bettered by South Africa which has world -class infrastructure. Nigeria ranks position 90! https://lpi.worldbank.org/international/global In terms of ports - Nigeria ports are so inefficient the least said about them the better - in fact most nigeria would rather import thro' Benin than Lagos really bad ports. Mombasa port has been improving tremendously - and is now if I am not wrong the 4 busiest port - beating Nigerian ports - they are only bettered by Durban and North Africa port of Morocco & Egypt. theenchanter: 2 Likes |

http://www.freightintoafrica.com/article/why_high_dwell_times_in_african_ports Cargo dwell times in African ports are unusually long—more than two weeks on average, compared to under a week in large ports in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Excluding Durban and Mombasa, average cargo dwell time in most ports in Africa is close to 20 days (see the table below). Meanwhile Nigeria's port are Africa worst https://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/cargo-dwell-time-in-nigerian-seaports-remains-highest-in-africa/ Imported cargo into Nigeria stays longer in the port before being cleared by inspection authorities when compared with other seaports in Africa, a study funded by the Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC) reveals. In Nigeria’s seaport, cargo dwells for 19-25 days; in Cotonou, 12-14 days; in Durban port, South Africa, four days, while in Mombassa port, Kenya, cargo stays a maximum of 5.7 days, the study further notes. In 2012 - Mombasa I know has drastically improved to about 3-4 days if not less cargo dwell time. In 2017 - Container ship average working time at the port of Mombasa improved by half a day to record 1.93 days in the week ended August 16th. The previous week saw this period which is basically between the first and last slings register 2.55 days. While this happened, the container dwell time at the port recorded 4.35 daysdown from 4.85 days experienced in the previous week.https://www.kpa.co.ke/Pages/Port-of-Mombasa-records-shorter-ship-average-working-time.aspx In 2018 - Durban got to be worried as Mombasa port launch the Africa's first SHIP TO TRAIN evacuation - meaning cargo dwell time is less than a day - ship docks and cargo is off to inland the same day. 2 Likes |

While Nigeria's wait for Dangote to build a new port for himself; Kenya has progressively improved Mombasa port from the horror days when it was like Nigeria ports that takes 3-4 weeks for container to be cleared to now when it's launched Africa's first ship to train. This will translate to huge savings by shippping companies, customers in time+money - which get passed down to economy. The MD said the ship turn-around, which is the time taken by a vessel from when it berths to the time it leaves the Port, achieved an all-time high of 2.9 days. Cargo dwell time has also come down from 12.6 days to four days. “We want a port that waits for ships and not the vice-versa,” she said. To remain responsive to shipping and trade trends, the port has continued to implement elaborate port modernisation programmes to position Mombasa as a world class port of choice. “We have expanded yards and berths to handle more cargo, revamped our ICT system for faster document processing and modernized cargo handling equipment,” she said. 1 Like |

rvp20182: You beat me to it! I was looking for the last WB IMF Global Logistics Performance Index of 2016. As usual you can guess where we are. The salient point is apparent when you look at the trend...in 2007...Kenya was ranked 76....and has now climbed nearly 40 position..and overtaken that many countries. Nigeria in 2007 was ranked 93...and now is ranked 90. So in 10 yrs while Kenya is making tremendous progress Nigeria is stuck right there. Look at port improvement...they either have stagnated or gotten worse...while Kenya is slowly and surely challenging South Africa. In fact I would wager to say by next year Mombasa would have overtaken Durban as Sub-Sahara most efficient port! kikuyu1: 3 Likes |

TayserMahiri: Oromos actually has strong representatives, there is a man named Gedu and other guy. Tigrays have many representatives but not Amhara. Many people fear if Oromos fight again but I fear if Amharas start cuz they have no voice. Land of Amhara has been taken by the govt and they will turn wild any time soon. . .And if they did . . .it's going to be very difficult cuz I heard there are Amhara forces training in Eritrea to launch attack on our gov't. And I am not surprised cuz the govt was supposed to hear them. All the bullet our government is shooting is killing the government itself. I am happy Kenyans that are close to Ethiopians and I've been watching the talks of President Uhuru Kenyatta and our PM yesterday. It was really nice and I hope this relationship will stay forever between our gov't and the people. 2 Likes |

If Ethiopia and Kenya could open their borders and allow movement of labour+trade; both countries would benefit tremendously. It good start but it way too slow. Let see if LAPSET - and opening up of moyale - tarmac -connecting Nairobi & Addis will kick start something. And of course the new AFTEC - Africa free trade - ought to ease trading btw Kenya and Ethiopia. ednited: 3 Likes |

rvp20182: Those are the outstanding trends throughout this thread! Constant rapid improvement in all sectors in one country while the other sinks ever deeper and faster while their denizens scream with joy as their no 1 countryman uses his billions to cure ED in the South Pacific! I'd really like to see the latest Logistics Performance Index with the operational SGR-imo,we should rise at least 3 places just for that. I agree 2 years latest Msa will overtake Durban;but give us 20-30 more years and we'll pass them as surely as we've bypassed delirious Dangotelanders hysterically yelping about their invisible half trillion dollar dollar GDP . Its very doable! 1 Like |

gallivant: The Mongols conquered almost half of the world, today where are they now? Weren't the Kingdoms of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and that of Nubia (Sudan) extremely powerful and rich kingdoms in the past? Today, where are they? What about Egyptians? How powerful is Turkey, Iran and Greece today compared to when they were world powers who controlled the entire world? So, what exactly is your own point? 1 Like |

TayserMahiri:I disagree with this. I read through the comments and people from Northeast India, Kenya, Bangledash, Ghana, South Africa were commenting on the same issues lol. I agree they don't just cover Nigeria and South Africa, they manage to cover various negative African stories. |
