Wow!

What a great read, from page 1 to 80, yea I read it all in 9 days, right from the very first post in 2014 (4 years reading experience lol) and I'm so excited, I knew it would be best to read from beginning, but seeing the number of pages involved almost discouraged me, well I'm glad I managed to read it all and I've learnt allot just from reading.

Many thanks to the originator of this post and to the many gurus too numerous to mention that have kept the thread going for 4 years I've seen allot of selfless and authentic advise here, which is not easy to come by in Nigeria, so I say all thanks to you all..

I recently started a pig farm (very small scale) at Oke Aro, reading this post through, I've come to realize I made allot of mistakes by starting with local breeds, the environment is also not standard but I was aware of that before starting, that was almost like my only option since I had a very little capital, I started on rented pens with 10 local weaners (5 male, 5 female). My intention was to use them for breeding, but all that has changed after reading through this thread, I'm not there all through as I have a small salary job from where I hope to get funds to take care of the pigs, I bought the weaners from the pen owner, so her worker takes care of them for me for a little stipend, while I visit once a week to know how they're faring.

Now I know farming local breeds isn't that profitable(wish I saw this thread before going in) its painful since I don't have much cash, but I don't want to quit, I want to make amends gradually till I'm able to get on the right track.

This is how I intend to go:
1. Buy a few better breeds of weaners (maybe 2 male and 2 female)

2. House them in a separate pen(I rented 2 rooms) so that I can get a better hygiene for them, install nipple drinkers on a plastic drum so they get clean water and all that.

Castrate all the local males I have and fatten them for sale.

3. Select 2 of the local female and use one of the better male breed to cross them for better offsprings

4. Use the remaining male to cross the 2 female for offsprings

Now here are my questions:

Is it advisable to use a better breed of male to cross the local female breed as I stated above?

Which breed can I go for if I want to cross the local female?

Presently ive spent about #12,000 on feeds for the first one month for the 10 from what I studied here that is too much, what would you advise I do to reduce cost since I'm not always physically present? I feed them Cassava peels, PKC, brewery waste and blood meal.

From my narration, what would you advise generally for me to survive this stage of the struggle?

All the gurus in the house Please kindly help a brother

@dynamix101 I understand you are also at One aro, please I'll like to hear from you and possibly meet you in person so I can gain from your wealth of experience.

Thanks, waiting to hear from you guys soon

As Femu has said breed is not the most important factor. Please dont spend too much money like 80k to buy a weaner and feed them with Cassava Peel, brewery waste and blood meal alone. Spend quality money on the feed of weaners because they need quality feed at weaners age to be able to grow well to their full potential. Look for good breed not necessarily expensive purebreed weaners to buy at reasonable price. Also, don't forget to add Lysine, Mentholine, premix, salt etc to their feed.

Thank you

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
This is a very serious allegation o.

All I know is that anyone who deceives others to sell runts as pure breeds to unsuspecting pig farmers shall NEVER prosper and it's just a matter of time that they will be exposed and put to shame and at the end of the day, they won't be able to deceive more people after their exposures.

Simply because you want to make money, you then sell fake pigs as pure breeds to people because it's difficult to really identify the pure ones?

If the buyers don't know, don't forget that God sees you and will punish you for it at His own time and it shall be a devastating punishment.

I am not in a position to verify your claims above but if it's true, God will surely fight for you and others that may have been so cheated by any pig farmer.

Generally, we should all strive very hard to find out and confirm the authenticity of claims by any pig farmer of stock of these so called pure breeds. Ask those who may have bought from the same farm before you and if possible, pay a very experienced pig farmer to help you confirm before you pay.

Also, I am suggesting that pig farmers get contacts of their customers who buy "pure breeds" from them and give their contacts to prospective buyers for reference and confirmation of their claims. Also, you can let members on this forum know that you intend to buy from a particular farmer and beg members to let you know of their previous encounter with farmer as a pm chat.

May the Lord continue to expose and disgrace the black sheep(s) among us.

Goodday everyone! I have been following threads from for a while and I believe I have learnt alot. I manage a big pig farm that wants to market some of their stock, they have some nice pigs there. It is in Anambra state and I can confidently say they have one of the biggest pigs I have seen...over 400lbs approx. 200+ kg. And at the most affordable prices, give away price to say the least. If anyone is interested please indicate or call 08119040931. You won't regret you did!

My brother they sold growers at 30k, which they said are less than 4months, and some 3months. And weaners of 2months for 15k. And l feed these pigs mostly with corn and soya, and 4months most of them didn’t grow. And the ones that did, the pigs in my farm where even better than them.

In that dirty and stinky farm, they have no mean of ldentification either by tag or nochting the different breed they claim they have, once u ask which breed is this one, they will call one thing wey come their mind, and u ask them how do u knw is this one, they will say we knw them. All Na babash.

In fact it was later l had the bad result l began analyzing how l went with them. They are practicing inbreeding, and those things there are not close to pure breeds of pigs. If you doubt me pay a visit there with an experienced farmer, u will see for urself.

So brother unless u want to regret wasting ur money go and buy from them. Thank God l now have pure breeds of animals, though l bought very expensive but is worth it l don’t regret it a bit. They r nt for sell Incase some people here will thing on saying all those things to advertise my own.

Finally, no good pig farm will dirty, from their settings, arrangement and identification system, u will knw they r real.
