Good day house. Please I need help. If using a lecturer as your recommender, must his email address contain your undergraduate school abbreviation?
E.g kkings.unn@yahoo.com or is did normal one acceptable kkings@yahoo.com??
Please help ASAP.
Thanks.

Most universities prefer official e-mail addresses (eg, kkings@unn.edu.ng) to free email addresses such as yahoo and gmail. It's better to be on the safe side.

He should use his official e-mail address for credibility purposes. If he doesn't have, he should use his regular e-mail (Gmail, Yahoo etc)though it won't carry much attention like the official one. I think most of the lecturers like those in UNN have official emails. Official emails are best for recommendation letters. They will definitely carry more weight.

First, you don't have to retake the GRE if you dont have the luxury of time and money. You seem to have good GPAs to make up for your not so high Gre score. Phd admission is not all above GRE score, research fit, research experience, Gpa , advisors lor and Sop matter alot. Just to motivate you, I know someone who got in VT phd Civil engineering with a GRE score of 307 but other aspects were stellar. Just to put it in perspective, VT is ranked 7 with MIT and Mich, ann arbor in civil ranking. Once you meet the gre cutoff of each school, you should be fine. However if you have time and money you can retake the Gre. Secondly, ditch that plan of writing ieslt and not toefl if you have not paid. Toefl is more recognized in the US and its easier. Most schools might not take ieslt from you, so dont limit yourself. Thirdly, I know you don't want to hear this but plan for fall 2019, more opportunities are available in Fall than spring because fall is the main admision season and many students graduate in Spring. No one can recommend schools for you, you need to put in some work yourself by researching for schools and you can come here to ask for opinions about the school if anyone has any first hand info or not. Here is a link to engineering schools ranking by US news https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwKmQy59LeEpUW5tbEZhRHJmR1U Go to mechanical engineering tab and check each school website to see which of them you would like to attend based on your criteria. Spread your risk well but make sure you shortlist tier 1 schools

Thank you. I understand. I just got really perplexed on getting the rejection from UC earlier this morning. In my mind, I'm out of my present location, just here physically. The thought of waiting for another year is just unnerving.

Hello gurus in the house im in need of your help

Here is my transcripts

me: Good morning sir

v.o: Good morning. how are you today?

me: im fine thank you..How are you

v.o: he said he was cool

v.o: so why are you going to the states?

me: im going to the states for my master degree program in bussiness administration and management with a major in management information systems at Lincoln univerisity oakland california.

v.o: so tell me why did you choose the school?

me: After a careful research, i choose linclon univeristy because it offers a custom-fit education for a selected few rather than provided a wide range of subjects for a wide range of possible audience coupled with the facf that its located in california which is an IT Hub and me being an IT person i can get the skills and knowledge needed for my career advancement and also the school MBA program upholds a strong international focus...(got all this from the school website)

v.o: cool and nods
did you choose any other school

me: yes i did and i mentioned the names

v.o: did you take any entrance exam

me: no i didnt i got it waived from the school

v.o: are you married

me: yes i am

v.o: do you have kids

me: no i dont

v.o: is your husband going with you

me: i said no he works but he will visit when he is on his annual leave

v.o: when did you finish your bachelors degree

me: i told him 2016 and the degree i had ..BSC computer science

v.o: who will be sponsoring me

me: i told him my mom but i didnt say the reason

i thought he was going to ask me why

i dont want a situation where i will look too forward because i was over prepared for the interview

this is the reason why i used my mom
well, when i was in my finals my mom asked me what are my plans after my degree and i told her i would like to pursue for my masters program and she said she will sponsor me through my academics even if im married or not and also im the last child of the family and also i work with her presently

he brought out the blue paper and said all those their blabla stories that i can reapply again

my school resumes in june so i would want to reapply again

Take the TOEFL as advised. If you have taken an IELTS before with a band 7.5/8 as you said, then TOEFL shouldn't be a hassle.

I submitted all my documents on the 20th of April, The school accepted it on the 2nd of may ( My brother had to call them for that). As at today I haven't heard from them. How many days or weeks did it take them to accept yours?

There is there between accepting documents and acceptance..

Aceepting your documents means they received it and they will have to review and process it to see if you are admissible or not. After that they will contact you if you are granted admission or not that's where the terms acceptance comes in.

I didn't apply to the school but it takes 2 - 8 weeks or more to know if you are given admission as an undergraduate applicant.

I need people with good university recommendations in the US.

Profile:
MSc grade: 4.64/5 (Automation Engineering, Finland)

BSc: 4.3*/5 (Different engineering discipline from top Nigerian university)

GRE: Q-158, V-155, A-4.0. (could've done better, but didn't have much time to prepare, may try to improve)

1 IEEE conference publication.

Looking to secure a PhD admission in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering cool.

I applied to 5 universities for Fall 2018 start but got bounced by all, except NYU that requested me to defer in order to provide IELTS/TOEFL for 2019 admission. Cornell rejected because I couldn't get IELTS waiver.

I guess I'm having a though time because I'm switching field to pursue what I really desire, but I know there are some good (ranked) universities that would be good fit for me. People who have sure university information should please share with me so that I can research them on my own.

Thank you.

EDITED:
US Schools applied to MIT, Stanford, Cornell, NYU, and University of Cincinnati.

Canadian Universities: U of Toronto(application incomplete because of NASU strike) and McGill.

To re-emphasize most of what has been said:

1. Your GRE is not the issue. Speaking Brusquely, even if you scored 340 in the GRE. You probably will not get into the top 2 schools on that list. And when you get here (because you will) you will understand why. I have seen people who got into MIT with 320...but after profiling them, I saw why they were taken.

2. Take the TOEFL advise here because you don't want to be admitted from a position of disobedience.

3. What I really think you need to change is your school choices and how FFP (fit for purpose) they are. I read about some distinguished guy in my major before I got here and wanted to work with him. But on conversing with people who know him, that would have been the biggest mistake of my life. Some schools won't just work for you.

Some Profs give you absolute independence and let you grow into your own. You may not have many papers by the end of the PhD but one of your publications could make it into a top rated journal whereas another Prof might micromanage you all through and you could have 6 publications in mediocre journals (implying little impact from your results).

Some states do not work well for people. Whilst some crave the Nigerian milieu and ambience, others don't. Some like the big city feel and others prefer the bucolic aura that comes with the smaller more conservative cities.

The due diligence involved in this takes some work but you'd be happier you did it. 1 year will only be a long time for now. If you make a mistake now, 1 month under a bad PI will feel like 10 years.

At the end of the day, it is all about funding sha. But your profile is very good as it currently is. Very very good.

Yeah I understand how it feels to wait for one year but Phd is not worth doing where you don't like just because you got funding. However the decision is yours to make. Just calm down and think, who knows spring might also work. There is no hard rule to these things but based on experiences, we can only advice each other. Her ignorant self doesn't even know its Kingsville and not "Kingston". The so called ranked schools you have been ranting about, I wont be surprised if you don't even know the Cities, towns or States they are located. I kept asking myself after going through your posts, If UI is way better than the schools here , why then are you following this trend here on Nairaland? I believe you haven't left the borders of Nigeria before, but because you believe you have internet data you do not know how to utilize, you can come online to type some BS. Ask questions if you don't know rather being over there in Nigeria and give assumptions to what you know nothing about. When you graduate from Havard and start working in Microsoft or Apple, then you can come back on this trend and quote me, and lets see if i wont be your regional manager by then. But if that is not the case with you, we are definitely not on the same level. Get your information right about something, ask question and LEARN. Do not talk before thinking
hilaryxoxo:

Hey,
I know about the Texas A & M system but I wasn’t familiar with the Kingston one.

The main message I was trying to pass across was that we should shoot higher shots. I just joined nairaland and 80% of the schools people have mentioned on this thread don’t even have any ranking. In other words, these school arent worthy/accredited enough to be ranked. That’s a very big thing. A lot of people here are blinded by the fact that the schools are in the US. They don’t know that there’s no prospect in some of these schools. I’m definitely not saying it must be an Ivy League, but let it be a decent school. Top 1000 in the world should be the minimum threshold.

Visa denied. Lagos. Post 2. 6am
Interview lasted for about 6 to 7 minutes

Me: Good morning
VO: no answer, pass me your passport and I 20
Me: Gave her

VO: why did you choose this school?
Me: I chose GGU because GGU has this curriculum that suits my career goals in this sense that offer students this environmental law and justice clinic whereby students get to work under attorneys and other US agencies(names one agency) while they study gaining rich practical experience on environmental Law. Then secondly GGU offered me a merit scholarship of 18000 dollars ( She was just starring at me)

VO: which program are you going for?

Me: masters degree on environmental Law

VO: (Cuts in) LLM on environmental law so what will this degree do for you?

Me: This degree upon my return to Nigeria will score me a job as legal officer with Nigerian Federal Environmental Protection Agency, then secondly when you look at PORT Harcourt where I live, there's a lot of ongoing environmental pollution cases and most of these victims are masses who can't afford to pay a lawyer,so I intend to set up a service oriented NGO in ph where these victims could be offered free access to justice and I believe that a good knowledge of this course will go a long way in equipping me.

VO:How many schools did you apply to?

Me 3 schools

VO: what's your highest qualification?

Me: BL... Barrister at Law

VO: Are you married
Me: Sure am married

VO: Any children?

Me: Yes I have one child,a son

VO: who is paying the rest of the tuition:

Me: My elder sister(calls her name)

VO: why did you chose this sponsor?
Me: Because she's been the one paying my tuition since secondary, university and Law school, she's like a mother to me

VO: sorry I won't....(hands me a blue paper and my passport

Me: Thanks

Please the gurus in this house should help me look at this, add or subtract where applicable. I actually prepared well for my interview and my interest is a bit dampened which is not too good for me.
I have a virgin passport which I have had since January 2014.

I am looking at reapplying but don't know what to state as the reason for the previous denial/what has changed in my
application. I wouldn't also mind a mock interview

Personally, I think you had issues when you said your Elder sister will be Paying for your studies !! its wasn't convincing enough at all ! A married woman depending on your Elder sister is not strong enough ! What of your Husband and co ?

I think that was the major reason why you where denied not because of the school .The interview was going well before you threw everything away ! My advice try again and find a better reason !!

2. Take the TOEFL advise here because you don't want to be admitted from a position of disobedience.

I'm working on this already, it will set me back by at least $250-300 in my current location. I know it is worth it.

3. What I really think you need to change is your school choices and how FFP (fit for purpose) they are. I read about some distinguished guy in my major before I got here and wanted to work with him. I quite understand your point. I'm currently experiencing someting similar to that, I can't talk more on that on an open forum as this though it's quasi-anonymous but some people will know...

Some Profs give you absolute independence and let you grow into your own. You may not have many papers by the end of the PhD but one of your publications could make it into a top rated journal whereas another Prof might micromanage you all through and you could have 6 publications in mediocre journals (implying little impact from your results).

Thank you so much for your pieces of advice, I'll make use of them. I think what I really need is a very proficient PI in a good and accomodating/supportive environment... I don't appreciate the setting in which I currently research due to the lack of those two qualities.

I am going to disagree with your imput. I am not a VO but simply because the VO kept asking more questions didn't mean the interview was going well, except perhaps you are a mind reader grin grin. I dont see why her sister cant be her sponsor because shes married what if her husband cant foot the bill? she gave reasons has to why her sister is her sponsor and i believe her reasons were sufficient enough we have seen transcripts were distance relatives like uncles and aunts are sponsors and visa was approved ..... i would not advice she throw away another visa fee on a no ranked school if anything was wrong with her transcript it simply never was because her aunt is her sponsor

As a matter of fact, I have funding where I'm, just not motivated to do anything here again. I have contacted many faculty members in US universities, most of them are claiming they've already committed their funding to other students that contacted earlier. I know I will need patience, but many things are going to be suspended because of this...
