kenpaul0:Not hating, but NAF MI-35M helicopters feature way more advanced systems on board. Rooivalk mission computers are old. Plus a much wider variety of munitions to pick from. MI-35m cockpit pictured below. If we are looking at an advanced attack helicopter for the army, the T-129 from Turkey is our best option. 4 Likes

Aside Post: Just Thinking Nigeria Anyone see the embarrassment the IGP Kpotun Idris is increasingly becoming. This guy couldn't put two English words together. He was even assisted to read. Oh my! This is what happens in a place where loyalty is placed above merit. Meanwhile he is looking for people to implicate to pls Aso Rock; the most partisan IGP ever in history. He is the complete contrast to the urbane gentleman and police chief in Lagos Edgal, an educated man, who I'm confident would have honored the Senate invitation setting a good example. Nigeria I hail thee! Many things tire me in Naija one of which is the police. I miss Arase. Apparently the Military is one of the few institutions we have left always with it's honor intact. It gives joy to go abroad and come back home to see our military is comparable to what obtains in the west. |

Henry240:Not hating.........uhm but could you answer a few questions? Does the Mi35m feature a better EW suite than SAABs IDAS which is used on the Su30mkm as well as Gripen E/F? Does the Mi35m feature a better HMSD than the TopOwl which is also used on the T-129?..........does the Mi35m even have a HMD? Is the Mi35m equipped with Radar......Let me answer, no it's not. Does the Mi35m(specifically NAF) feature a data link? Can munition fired from the Mi35m be designated by other platforms be it air or land? Does the MI35m have an Automated Flight Control System? Is the Mi35m designed for stealth with low radar, visual, infrared and acoustic signatures? Rooivalk can be equipped with a 20mm cannon, Mokopa, FZ guided rockets, A-darter(in near future) , Mistral AA missiles....what more do you want? Most of the obsolescence was dealt with when the Rooivalk was upgraded to Mk1F spec a couple of years ago hence the new EW suite, HMSD, Navigation suite ect ect Things that need replacing: NightOwl sight is getting old(Bought in 2005) but still gets the job done, Increasing payload, increasing survivablity , upgrading to a full glass cockpit. In terms of raw performance it leaves the MI35 in it's dust......well most AH in the world actual including the Apache!! Lastly if we were talking about a potential Rooivalk export it would the the MK2 which is a whole different beast! 7 Likes

Henry240: - Did you know that a Rooivalk can fire at overland targets designated by a Gripen? - Did you know that it can fire Mistral missiles at a fighter jet then take cover on the ground, switch off its engines BUT the Mistral missile would still find its target? - It can engage targets tracked by a frigate while at sea, the Rooivalk being inland - did you know that? - Did you know that a Rooivalk is hard to pickup on radar? It's practically invisible heat-seaking missiles. Your so-called mission computers are cosmetics, a client gets his own specifications.... As for your MI-35, it's an MI-24 with makeup, it's still the same old fat Hind. 4 Likes |

ActivateKruger: Actually: 1) Denel is no longer pursuing the Gripen designator/Rooivalk carrier option. Gripen is too fast and Denel doesn't have the funds for the integration to adapt Mokopa missile accordingly; separate ground operator, other heli-borne, Hawk LIFT, Seeker UAV designators work well enough. 2) Mistral a2a ran out a decade and no replacement. The idea is overhaul of doctrine when new stocks of A-darter arrive in 2nd quarter of 2019. 3) The naval aspect was abandoned when the Rooivalk order was cut from 48 to 12. As were so many other things, like the MMW radar. 4) The anti-ship Mokopa missiles carried on the Algerian Super Lynx can only be fired from our Super Lynx, not Rooivalk, because the Algerians insisted Agusta carry the integration costs. In conclusion, while our Rooivalk is still 2nd to the Algerian MI-28/ Egyptian Apache when it comes to dedicated attack helis on the African continent purely on specs, performance and ease of maintenance, it's in need of an avionics upgrade. 4 Likes |

frumentius: I'm a Nigerian but have big issues with Russian aircraft. The MI 35M has its functionalities over and above what NAF used to have but it and MI 28 are completely unsuited to modern net centric warfare. Yes they also don't have radar which limits range and accuracy of targeting like exists on the Longbow Apache and Rooivark for instance. Even now the MI 35M would struggle with detection and target engagement accuracy beyond 2km I am sure . Russians should get their acts together if they are going to compete internationally . Even the MIG 29 MST that Nigeria might buy at some point falls short at detection and engagement accuracy beyond 70km. It's percusor models would had radar that could see only up to 70km integrated with delivering missiles delivering up to 90km accurately . How does that work?. Russians have over emphasized dogfighting and powerful engines to the detriment of holistic capabilities that ensure true mission effectiveness modern battle space 2 Likes |

If you give me a high precision sniper rifle, it may be no more effective than crossbow. Shiny tools are nice but someome very skilled has to use them. Stats on paper can be crappy. If nt America will be done and dusted in Afghanistan, wont have spent ages in vietnam. Ussr wld hv succeeded in Afghanistan, BH wld hv been decimated in weeks of their 2nd coming, the black hawk down ish wld never have happened. |

frumentius:1) did they abandoned it though? since last year (or the year before) the Gripen successfully designated a target when the mokopa was fired from the Rooivalk during a display. 2) agree 3) I don't think he was talking about a proposed naval version, I think what he meant was that through Link-ZA targets tracked by a frigate can be seen by the Rooivalk thanks to link za. 4)same, have not heard about an anti ship mokopa for the Rooivalk. |

Patented: Well it appears someone has the thinking of a professional serviceman. I´ve happed on it all day that whats on paper ain´t reality. It´s of no use trying to convince internet warriors who probably never fired a rifle in their life until as usual exigencies bring the reality to the fore as enumerated above. A combatant knows its probably unnecessary telling an amateur with a high performance rifle he can get killed but of course he feels invincible until he actually gets killed by the skilled operator with an Ak who knows the weapon of his enemy. If i´m given command of troops i´ll take what works, rugged and compatible with my doctrine of combat. The point is getting the job done not action for the cameras. |
