giles14:Depends on what you consider expensive....the $40 price tag that everyone likes quoting includes the entire 25 year development cost.......if Denel gets enough export orders to reopen production the export price will be considerably lower. |

jln115: jln115: This. When calculating unit cost its literally cost of R& divided by number built. A great example of this is the F35, everyone harps on about "the 1 trillion dollar fighter" But when it reaches full production it will be cheaper per unit than any NATO fighter currently on the market. 2 Likes |

Patchesagain:If SAAF ordered the original number of 36 it would of cost SAAF around $13 million a unit. |

Patented: Yes, you need skills to use them. If you are properly trained, your high end precision rifle will be better than a crossbow. I dont see how effective employment of weaponry related to COIN. The American weapons worked just fine in Vietnam, they never lost major engagement. Ditto for the Russians in Afghanistan. What you are confusing here is skills training and doctrine. Experience is irrelevant as well, when compared to training and doctrine. The simple fact of the matter is that those flaws you pointed out came from militaries that werent prepared for the type of war they faced. |

And that inadequate preparation was only seen with the benefit of hindsight. So basically the test of your preparation is battle. Without that its just words and stats on paper. Patented: I know it wasnt aimed at any group, thats why I responded seriously. With regards to preparation that goes to training and doctrine. The American difficulties in Afghanistan and Iraq were specifically because they actually learn anything from Veitnam. The lessons they learnt in 'Nam were applied in the Gulf-War 1: over-whelming firepower, precision air-power and, most importantly, clear and limited political objectives. None of these lessons were applied to Afghanistan. At one point there were less American troops in Afghanistan than police in New York! 4 Likes |

Noted. But in a way u made my point that its the men that make or break the battle more than the equipment. Shall we agree to disagree? Patchesagain: |

Patchesagain: Err....no. That's a common misconception. They lost at least 5 major engagements in their 10 year war. In 65 the victorious 7th cav stumbled off the hard fought LZ X ray without flankers and lost an entire coy within hours. The American soldiers finally left LZ Albany for LZ Crooks at 13°40′5.6″N 107°39′10″E, six miles (10 km) away, on Nov. 19. The battle at LZ Albany cost the United States Army 155 men killed or missing and 124 woundedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ia_Drang#2nd.2F7th_Cav_and_the_ambush_near_LZ_Albany In Op Hickory May 67 the 3 Mar Div also lost a whole coy. Allied losses for the operation were by no means small; the Marines lost 142 killed and 896 wounded, while ARVN losses were 22 killed and 122 wounded.http://1stbn4thmarines.net/operations/history-folder/hickory.htm Complete list of defeats and pyrrhic victories is here. http://www.g2mil.com/lost_vietnam.htm Very very interesting reading! |

Reports say the President is accompanying his son to a pay lobola in Uganda this weekend. The question is, does he fly out with the SF since it's family business yet he's a head of state? 1 Like

Patchesagain: I didn't know that. I guess every African custom has a bridal price of some sort. However, the Ngunis excell at it. I read King Mswati III wanted 300 cows as a sign of interest to his daughter, it's 300 cows just to say "hello sir, I want to lobola your daughter", then you'll end up doing 700 cows in total... However, the Ramaphosas will depart with only 100 cows... So the report says 2 Likes

ActivateKruger: False report and I think the media reports are now being corrected, uncles from the groom's family would carry this responsibility. As far as SF, I doubt this would be justifiable. At most STF, but even that would IMO be overkill in this instance. Uganda is relatively low risk, but again IMO |

Batmobile Of The Skies. Helicopters aren’t given much thought when compared to fighter jets due to lower speed and agility. But every once in a while technology takes a leap forward and changes our opinion. The debut of Sikorsky S-97 Raider is a big game-changer for the world of attack helicopters. The S-97 is boasting speed and agility far beyond other helicopters. In development, the S-97 is boasting flying speed of 276 mph far making it the second fastest helicopter ever made after the experimental Eurocopter X3. The Raider is capable of transporting six passengers alongside two pilots but is also capable of autonomous flight. Along with its impressive speed, it can fly to an incredible height of over 10,000 feet. “In addition to flying at nearly twice the speed of a conventional helicopter, the S-97 RAIDER helicopter will incorporate other key performance parameters critical to combat operations — increased maneuverability, greater endurance, and the ability to operate at high altitudes.” As prototypes improve the S-97 will undergo weapon testing for its .50 caliber and rocket pods. The Raider is a sleek, impressive and but could be the innovation the military needs for helicopters?Take a look at this clip and judge for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HncZgouxt9k 1 Like

They should make another video once all flight tests and milestones have been achieved. No real use making a video showing basic helicopter flight. |

gees9: Overkill? It would be show off to arrive with Hornets RDVs and man armed just for lobola negotiations. To think about it, wouldn't you want to be accompanied by Special Forces to lobola? It's more than cool, it's legendary NB: Screw the taxpayers and the opposition parties |

jln115: As a helicopter goes higher, the air gets thinner and thinner to cut through with very little momentum. Their main operation lies in being as close to ground as possible and being useful there, also remember it can carry 2crew and 6 passengers |

jteku:Yeah, i know how helicopters work Still there are choppers out there that can carry 3 crew and 20 fully kitted troops that have a service ceiling of 20 000 feet Also most modern AH have NOE thus can fly very close to the ground anyway so what do you mean "close to ground as possible and being useful there" P.S couldn't watch the video with sound so don't know if they said something specific to operating as close to the ground as possible and what advantage there is to that! I've always thought the higher you can hover and fly the better since your less likely to be hit by enemy fire at higher altitudes. |
