VIN History.

Historically, there have been several watershed moments in the development of automobiles and vehicles, a lengthy list from the invention of the wheel, to the development of steam powered engines, the four stroke engine cycle, the internal combustion engine, and other features including safety measures like airbags, 3 point seatbelts, ABS (anti-lock braking system), and a host of other advancements.

Today we focus on the VIN, also referred to as the Chassis Number because it is stamped on the vehicle chassis, or front frame, and its impact on automobile technology and advancements.

VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States, by early adopters like the Ford Motor Company and General Motors, and was used in various non-uniform formats on many vehicles including motorcycles and trailers or other long haul vehicles, but it was not until 1981 that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States standardized the format.

It required all on-road vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the letters I (i), O (o), and Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).

The VIN is not a random series of numbers, but a carefully calculated 17-digit AlphaNumeric(containing both numbers and alphabets) code, which is specific and unique for all road going vehicles.

No two vehicles should have the same VIN, as generally no two humans have the exact same fingerprint sequences, and all VINs must be valid and must decode to yield a vast amount of information specific to each vehicle.

There are several internationally accepted standards for the VIN, formulated by international bodies such as the SAE, ISO, ADR, and FMVSS, each gaining acceptance in different parts of the world. The focus here is on the FMVSS, used in the United States and Canada.

This is referred to as the World Manufacturer Identity, WMI, 1NX refers to North America, specifically a vehicle produced in the United States.

The fourth to ninth positions in the VIN are the vehicle descriptor section or VDS. This is used, according to local regulations, to identify the vehicle type, and may include information on the automobile platform used, the model, and the body style.
Manufacturers may use the 8th position to indicate the engine choice, for vehicles with multiple engine choices, V6 or Inline 4, for example.
The 9th digit is the Check digit, a calculated number which verifies the validity of the VIN.

9
The 10th digit refers to the model year. Vehicles from 2001 to 2009 will have numbers 1 to 9 as the 10th digit, however from 2010 an alphabetic system was introduced, with 2010 represented as A, 2011 as B, and so on. U, Z and the digit 0 are not allowed as the 10th digit.

Z
This is the Plant Code. Compulsory in North America is the use of the 11th character to identify the factory at which the vehicle was built.

This is the serial number of the vehicle. It represents the number of the particular vehicle, of 999,999 similar sequentially produced models.

With the above there are online resources which decode the VIN itself and can yield information about individual vehicles such as the country, plant, year of manufacture, engine configuration, among others.

It is also possible to source vehicle parts using the VIN, on some part manufacturing websites, as well as producing or ordering vehicle keys, though these often still need to be encoded physically to the vehicle to function.

Vehicle History

Perhaps the most significant use of the VIN is in determining the history of a vehicle, from its manufacture and shipping to a dealership, purchase, title registration, and a host of other events in the lifespan of a vehicle used in the US and Canada.

Vehicle History dates back to the early days of standardized VIN in the US, in 1984 a company providing Vehicle History Reports was founded, and in 1986 started issuing documents which came to be known as CarFax reports. These early reports were rudimentary and issued to dealers via fax machines.

Over the years and with advancements in data technology these history reports have become detailed, and reveal a significant part of the history of a vehicle used in the US, and Canada, as well as other countries like the UK, which have slightly different methods.

The sources of the information in VIN reports include U.S. state title and registration records, auto and salvage auctions, Canadian motor vehicle records, rental and fleet vehicle companies, consumer protection agencies, state inspection stations, extended warranty companies, insurance companies, fire and police departments, manufacturers, inspection companies, service and repair facilities, dealers and import/export companies. Personal information is often scrubbed from the history reports before being issued.

These reports detect events reported to the above sources, and, while they may not always contain all information about a vehicle history, often indicate a large amount of information or relevance to a vehicle usage history.

There are 3 major providers of Vehicle History Reports for vehicles from North America:

NMVTIS
A government agency providing basic history reports. These may be obtained free in some cases, or for as little as 500-1000 NGN.

CarFax
A data agency and the first provider of detailed Vehicle history reports. They can be obtained for 3000-4000 NGN.

AutoCheck
A more recent but significant alternative to CarFax reports. AutoCheck is owned and operated by the US data giant Experian. They can be obtained for 1000-3000 NGN.

These providers often charge fees for access, with CarFax charging the most, on average, and access to NMVTIS is the least expensive, as they often provide only very basic information. NMVTIS is required by US law to be a self sustaining entity, so must charge a small fee to self finance their operations.




AutoCheck reports often strike the balance between information and cost, as they provide a great deal of information for much less cost then CarFax, and in some cases have been found to include information not provided by CarFax.
