Printerscanner:Yes, few brits are protesting that these artefacts be returned to where they belong or rent be paid on them as the British Museum is making money out of it.If you watch the news, few Statues of those who got involved in these trades have been brought down in recent years! 1 Like |

erico2k2: Make no mistake, stealing was not an after-thought, but the purpose. Even before leaving Europe, they knew they were going to steal. They knew in advance because Rome already did the same thing to other European countries in medieval times. Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, and all the other colonialists were simply repeating what they learned from Rome. In fact, when one honest British man returned stolen artifacts to Benin kingdom few years ago, the jotter that the invaders recorded their activities in the so called punitive expeditions labeled the materials as ''loots'' and ''more loots''. The soldiers on ground themselves said they came to loot!!. See below video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM8mNuZb2HY 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Its strange how the English Omit this part from their history when you do the life in the Uk test. godfatherx:Read history and stop making assumptions. The Benin kingdom rejected colonies.. one of the only kingdoms in Africa that stood their ground. For that reason, there was an invasion in which the oba was sent out to leave his remaining days in calaber and the arts numbering over 200 was stolen. |

Can you compare the National Museum to those pics on the thread. Stop deceiving yourself bro. Happy Sunday. |

tamethem:let me point you to a quote try and visit the museums in china, its nothing spectacular but check this http://www.britishmuseum.org/about_us/news_and_press/press_releases/2007/the_first_emperor.aspx They don't have to remain on home land cos things like this are not always valued where they come from, we can make loads of money from it if we trade them round the world like the Chinese are doing! The Oba of Benin still have the original Mud hot from his ancestors inside the palace, swords from his fore fathers and loads of carvings. My Granddad was 115 when he dies, he had Beads from his great grand father still, so that's nearly 350 years Old. One stubborn far cozen stole and sold part of it back in the days |

Abeg, leave the sculptures and carvings there. At least they spend a fortune maintaining and keeping them in top form. The lots and lots of them we have in Nigeria have either been abandoned or burnt by one prayer warrior. 1 Like |

ariesbull:ahahahahah whast the difference between an invasion and a war let me enlighten you a bit, War is to fight defeat a next army of another country, region or ethnicity Invasion n the other hand is to capture territories and entry not authorised, invasion does not always have to be got by fighting. If U don't belive this or understand, U can do Google, I know U r there already still searching! |

Returning it is not the issue but maintaining it... Perhaps it is too much for the benins to handle for now....its more than 2000 worth of art piece we have not yet built back the benin walls nor maintain the moat or even the Benin museum its terrible.... If its to collect the important ones leave the rest till when nigeria it better then we could take all back.... The art are in most world power countries just name it ....if not the entire Europe its going ti be difficult to fight all of them ...oba should collect the important one then the british should come to nigeria and make a dublicate of the art work been taking simple..... But the british sha they wanted to eliminate the full benin race |

It's true these exhibits were stolen, and maybe we can encourage the British Museum to indicate the methods by which they came across them. But to be honest, the British Museum is the best place for them: 1. the exhibits will be well maintained, unlike our museums here where most pieces are left undusted for years. 2. vastly larger number of people will be exposed to these artifacts, than if they came here. There were over 7 million visitors last year... our Museums can barely boast of a few hundred thousand. Yes we can get more visitors, but it involves improving airports, infrastructure and security. 3. We'd sendup spending a few 10s of millions of pounds to get these exhibits back... even if they were returned for free, we know gov't officials will inflate the cost of packing and repatriation. Let's not kid ourselves... maybe when our public institutions get their acts together and demonstrate they can preserve and exhibit artifacts as well as other places in the world, I would consider bringing them back home. I've been to museums in different parts of Nigeria, and gov't really needs to up their budget in maintaining these places. 1 Like |

OneKinGuy: Are you joking? These things are pointers to our past civilization because the white man would always say Africans have no history/civilization now u are saying it would add to our spiritual problem. What is Spiritual about these things? So sad too bad. I blame our leaders for this they should have made history compulsory for everyone, Africans don't know their history and past civilization 1 Like |
