Is it creating problems for the British?
Yes, few brits are protesting that these artefacts be returned to where they belong or rent be paid on them as the British Museum is making money out of it.If you watch the news, few Statues of those who got involved in these trades have been brought down in recent years!

yeah I get that, I was only going by what can be proven in a court of law. If you check you will agree with me these where for trae purposes not to steal but as you know it the heart of man is wicked, they looted, raped and stole.

Make no mistake, stealing was not an after-thought, but the purpose. Even before leaving Europe, they knew they were going to steal. They knew in advance because Rome already did the same thing to other European countries in medieval times.

Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, and all the other colonialists were simply repeating what they learned from Rome. In fact, when one honest British man returned stolen artifacts to Benin kingdom few years ago, the jotter that the invaders recorded their activities in the so called punitive expeditions labeled the materials as ''loots'' and ''more loots''. The soldiers on ground themselves said they came to loot!!. See below video.

Historians and Africans should stop using the above word that the British has put in our mouths through indoctrination a.k.a education. The so called punitive expeditions were ''stealing expeditions'' carried out all over the world in their greedy quest for world domination. The right word to use is stealing expedition or war of conquest.

How could it be a punitive expedition; when?

In 1887, the British dethroned king Jaja of Opobo and forced him to exile for refusing to allow British monopoly on commodity trade in his kingdom.

In 1861, the British threatened Oba of Lagos, Oba Dosunmu with war for refusing to sign a treaty surrendering Lagos to them as British protectorate. He later succumbed and gave up Lagos as a British protectorate.

In 1895, the British dethroned king Koko Mingi VIII of Nembe and sent him to exile for refusing to accept an exploitative contract term from the royal Niger company- a British colonial monopoly.

In 1735, a British delegation shot Oba Oresoyen in his palace for being stubborn and refusing to take instruction from Queen of England.

In 1897, the British dethroned Oba Ovonramwen of Bini kingdom and sent him to exile after unsuccessful attempts to lure him to surrender his kingdom to slavery. After he was exiled, the British called a meeting of the community, and in a triumphant tone, they said “you see, your King is gone!. From today, you have only one King and her name is Queen Victoria. Henceforth, she’s the only one you shall pay tributes to”.

In 1894, the British exiled king Nana of Itsekiri to Ghana and took over his oil palm factory and cocoa plantation.

In 1896, the British exiled king Prempeh I of Ashanti kingdom for refusing to offer them 50,000 ounces of gold at once, even as the king was begging them he can pay in installments starting with an initial 680 ounces down payment. The British took the 680 initial deposit from him and reneged from the agreement. Finally, the head of the British expedition ordered king Prempeh to vacate his seat and to sit on the floor. When king Prempeh sat on the floor, he sat on Prempeh's official seat and started verbally abusing the king, the Ashanti kingdom, and black people in general with all sorts of derogatory words. When he was done abusing the king, he asked the king to come forward to kiss his boots (his right and left foot) and the king did so. After humiliating the king in the presence of the whole village, he sent him to exile to Seychelles.

Note that king Prempeh did not owe Britain any gold as he didn’t have any business with them; rather, the British heard his official seat was made of real gold, they got jealous and wanted some of the gold. When Prempeh refused to give them gold, they threatened him to provide gold or have his kingdom invaded. The king under fear of exile signed he would provide the gold, but he didn’t have all of the gold at once.

In 1899, the British exiled king Mwanga II of Buganda a.k.a the Kabaka of Buganda to Seychelles. He was dethroned for refusing to convert to Christianity and also for refusing to sign a treaty with Lord Lugard granting Britain power over taxes in his kingdom and trade to the Imperial British East Africa Company.

In 1899, the British shot and wounded king Kabalega of Bunyoro in his palace for refusing to surrender his kingdom to colonialism. He was exiled to the Seychelles and the British installed a puppet king.

In 1883, the British pressured Oba Awujale Fidipote to exile in Epe, after threatening military invasion of his kingdom.

In 1896, the British sent Queen Yaa Asantewaa to exile to the Seychelles for refusing to submit to imperial rule. Queen Yaa Asantewa fought gallantly and was only defeated by a fortified British expeditionary force.

In 1891, the British dethroned and exiled king Waiyaki Wa Hinga. King Waiyaki had earlier made an agreement with the British to allow them settle peacefully in his land. As usual, the British reneged from the agreement few month later, and wanted everything in his kingdom including his seat. A fight ensued and they hit king Waiyaki with (simi) dagger on his head, and planned to take him to court for prosecution. On the way to the court they changed their mind and decided to bury him alive instead. Till today, nobody knows where they buried him.

In Kenya, Britain beheaded another king. King Hinsa or something like that.

The list of dethroned and exiled African kings is endless. There must have been over 2,500 of such cases as ancient Africa was ruled by kings. Every single African king had to be dethroned or exiled for his kingdom to be enslaved. The French, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese, also have their share of these crimes in Africa.

Details at open letter to African kings and traditional rulers http://www.africason.com/2017/03/open-letter-to-african-kings.html

Was it stolen or made a gift by the Oba of Benin?
I'm sure the Oba in council are aware of the presence of those artifacts at the museum. Do some background check before crying wolf.
Read history and stop making assumptions. The Benin kingdom rejected colonies.. one of the only kingdoms in Africa that stood their ground. For that reason, there was an invasion in which the oba was sent out to leave his remaining days in calaber and the arts numbering over 200 was stolen.

Well I have not been there and don't know what obtains there but speaking generally our maintenance culture is bad.

I still maintain that.

Where is Nigeria Airways
Where is Nigeria Railway (just being revived though) but can we still maintain it
What about the National Stadium

My guy I can't mention all.

Can you compare the National Museum to those pics on the thread.

Stop deceiving yourself bro.

Happy Sunday.

try and visit the museums in china, its nothing spectacular but check this

They don't have to remain on home land cos things like this are not always valued where they come from, we can make loads of money from it if we trade them round the world like the Chinese are doing!
The Oba of Benin still have the original Mud hot from his ancestors inside the palace, swords from his fore fathers and loads of carvings.
My Granddad was 115 when he dies, he had Beads from his great grand father still, so that's nearly 350 years Old. One stubborn far cozen stole and sold part of it back in the days

Honestly, those artworks look beautiful and adorable in the British Museum.

Nevertheless, anything stolen by a thief no matter its worth, will be worth less in the palace of the thief

Africa doesn't value its own. Have you even visited the benin Museum to see the artifacts present there? Leave it there or return it to Nigeria and endless dust at your own peril

Return those art works to Benin and watch them glitter with importance and value

Abeg, leave the sculptures and carvings there. At least they spend a fortune maintaining and keeping them in top form.
The lots and lots of them we have in Nigeria have either been abandoned or burnt by one prayer warrior.

ahahahahah whast the difference between an invasion and a war
let me enlighten you a bit, War is to fight defeat a next army of another country, region or ethnicity
Invasion n the other hand is to capture territories and entry not authorised, invasion does not always have to be got by fighting. If U don't belive this or understand, U can do Google, I know U r there already still searching!

Returning it is not the issue but maintaining it...

Perhaps it is too much for the benins to handle for now....its more than 2000 worth of art piece we have not yet built back the benin walls nor maintain the moat or even the Benin museum its terrible....

If its to collect the important ones leave the rest till when nigeria it better then we could take all back....

The art are in most world power countries just name it ....if not the entire Europe its going ti be difficult to fight all of them ...oba should collect the important one then the british should come to nigeria and make a dublicate of the art work been taking simple.....
But the british sha they wanted to eliminate the full benin race

It's true these exhibits were stolen, and maybe we can encourage the British Museum to indicate the methods by which they came across them.

But to be honest, the British Museum is the best place for them:

1. the exhibits will be well maintained, unlike our museums here where most pieces are left undusted for years.

2. vastly larger number of people will be exposed to these artifacts, than if they came here. There were over 7 million visitors last year... our Museums can barely boast of a few hundred thousand. Yes we can get more visitors, but it involves improving airports, infrastructure and security.

3. We'd sendup spending a few 10s of millions of pounds to get these exhibits back... even if they were returned for free, we know gov't officials will inflate the cost of packing and repatriation.

Let's not kid ourselves... maybe when our public institutions get their acts together and demonstrate they can preserve and exhibit artifacts as well as other places in the world, I would consider bringing them back home. I've been to museums in different parts of Nigeria, and gov't really needs to up their budget in maintaining these places.
