Estimated billing is the practice whereby electricity distribution companies guess what a consumer's electricity consumption should be based on the location of the consumer and the kind of appliances that are in the consumer's premises. Many consumers complain about "crazy bills" that they receive from electricity companies. Crazy bills are bills that are given to a customer that do not reflect the correct consumption of that customer. Such crazy bills usually come in the form of estimated bills where the electricity distribution company gives the customer an estimate that far exceeds what that customer could possibly have consumed within the billing period. Electricity consumers in Nigeria are meant to receive pre-paid meters from electricity companies in order to ensure that they are only billed for what they consume, but the electricity companies have been unable to provide pre-paid meters to many consumers. Some consumers allege that the electricity distribution companies are deliberately refusing to supply consumers with meters so that they can continue over-billing consumers A member of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has sponsored a bill to criminalise the practice of estimated billing in Nigeria. A publuc hearing on the bill is scheduled to hold on June 5th, 2018. https://mobile.twitter.com/femigbaja/status/997766110966579201 14 Likes 3 Shares

Na today? Estimated billing is part of us. We have accepted it for so long. So why criminalize it? Oloshos charge us for overnight action even when we don't use more than 15minutes of the airtime. Someone dropping at Onitsha still gets to pay the same fee as someone dropping at Owerri in a bus from Lagos. We pay the same rate monthly for DSTV irrespective of the number of Channels we watch or how long we watch it. We are charged monthly Card maintenance fees whether we use our cards or not. Nigeria can never be metered. Because Nigeria thrives on exploitation 82 Likes 9 Shares |

I pray this sees the light, in thr past estimated bills are issued month end but this days you discover estimated bills get to you by beginning of the month how is that possible, how will a company know what it is going to supply within this period knowing fully well the generation in this country is uncertain plus the challenges of distribution, how will they know if a customer is going to use that much of his schedule for last month is not same thing with this month? This is just theft they are stealing from people 5 Likes |
