I'm equally worried too. which brain which stay back to develop our country...watching my boss relocate with his family to Canada is breaking me because he's on his way of being a confirmed made man. Even the Indians are not migrating like Nigerians. Majority of those leaving are living very comfortable life over here.

You think it's by "comfortable life?"

What we call comfortable life na rubbish

I decided to leave the zoo and pitch my tent elsewhere (I have not completely uprooted myself tho) even tho many will consider my family near rich, or should I say upper middle class.

Life is beyond all that

As much as I appreciate this op, my take is, if we all run away from our own Land. For who exactly are we leaving it for? And from whom exactly are we running and to whose house are we all running to? Mind you, the abokis are all over Lagos now (lekki, ikoyi, gra Ikeja) etc living Large giving birth to plenty children, populating the land from which the owners have absconded. Don't we all think its highest time we stand up to take our land back instead of being Coward by running? If not for us but for the next generation....

Whoever wants to stay should stay

As for many Nigerians, they are fleeing the "zoo" grin

It's not a country that is worth being patriotic over.

This is a very intelligent post, I commend you my brother. It is unfortunate that 21st century slavery is still on going today but the North, once again are resistant to it, just like they were in the past. Most of the former slaves taken to Europe were also from the South, it hasn't changed today.

Who are the Nigerians in Libya today? Southerners!
Who are the Nigerians in Italy today?
Southerners!
Who are the Nigerians in Canada today?
Southerners!
Who are the Nigerians in US today?
Southerners!
What of Malaysia, China, Japan, Korea, India, Qatar and other Asian countries?
Southerners!
Boko Haram , Cattle rustlers, Fulani herdsmen are mostly troubling the North/North central, some of them are even displaced in their own land, yet it's Southerners that are claiming victim more, still the North has the poorest people, yet it's Southerners who can afford over a million naira, some even afford over five million to study and relocate to Europe, Asia, and other countries but it's us that complain of hardship more

The North, including people from Niger, Chad and Fulanis will continue to dominate and spread further, they are gradually moving into East and South West with their families as we seek greener pastures abroad. The future of Nigeria belongs to the North, deservedly so.

hey thanks the info....im a fresh graduate and would like to study in germany was kinda disouraged a friend there. what do i really need to do to live Nigeria and probably live and do masters there. i need guidance please
Hi, don't be discouraged by what your friend said.

A guy (a Nairaland member) who left Nigeria told someone he has never seen a Nigerian that's jobless in the country he went that all of those he has met are living comfortably even him.

You know what?

The same crowd came in the group of over 100 members to tell them how the country went is bad, many Nigerians are suffering and also the place is not good for hustling.

His friend who is against what he did shared their chat and the dude later apologized.

Ever since, I stopped believing those kind of discouraging words.

Even though I'm not really eyeing Germany but do your research well and also do a proper plan. When you reach the country, you'll get to know all what your friend has been telling you is all lies.

Never argue with him, ask for the reason why he said the country is bad, note the point and prepare a plan on how to tackle it in case you find yourself in the same situation.

My friend what you said is not totally true. Northerns are equally migrating. If you go to the gulf, middle east and Oriental nations most of the migrants there from Nigeria are from the north. While southerners move towards the western world, Northerns are migrating to the Muslim nations

It's actually a wicked country.

I mean it's a wicked country that salaries are owed month on month in both The public and private sector.

It's a wicked country that lecturers frustrate students (if I narrate my ordeal in public uni, you'd be sorry for me)

It's a wicked country that the few that are enjoying feel comfortable driving around in the midst of so much poverty.

Do you think they will leave the oil? even our seaports are controlled by them. No need for argument, give Nigeria 10 more years at the rate of Southern migration, we will be filled with foreigners from Niger and Chad.. Fulanis seem to be on a campaign to spread throughout the country, people with foreign origin , may God help us

You are Spot on, world poverty com officially declared Nigeria as the country having the highest poor people in the world and yet it is a religious, godless nation full of churches, mosques, religious centers but void of godliness, kindness, care for the needy & have-nots, a country where as a university student you are not sure of your graduation date, a country where the resources of the country is shared daily by the useless criminal politicians and their cronies, a country rich in petroleum and yet import refined petrol from other countries,.

A country that can't provide good roads for its citizens and the roads are death trap nationwide, a country where corruption is celebrated, looters are given a path at the back, a country where 44 million dollars, 10 million dollars where found in different houses in Lagos and kaduna and nobody is punished, that is definitely not a nation, it is a jungle, a shithole and should be auctioned off on eBay for Western nations to buy it and govern it properly or else Nigeria is doomed and beyond redemption grin

....
Just wondering why you didn't ask her to provide stats before asking me..I don't support double standard.
For the records,Adultery is NOT a crime in the US under the federal laws but few states that still operates such laws only put minor penalties as deterrent, reason we hardly hear about such lawsuits.
Meanwhile sharia laws (mostly practice in the north) and customary laws (in the south) are all part of nigeria laws which makes it a crime under the Nigeria laws with varying degree of punishments and I guess you have seen or heard about its executions.

Without seen any stats, you already concluded them to be false,I can only imagine your state of mind but hey,am not here to ease your ignorance.
It's a shame to be blinded to the laws that operate in your country but can quote or assume laws that don't exist in other countries.

Sir....I am a Black-American/Nigerian ......(late mom was black American and my dad is a full-fledged Igbo man). I am an African-American in the truest sense of the word. I have a right to "dual-citizenship".
I, however, was born, raised and living in the U.S.
I associate with the American culture because that is what I have lived my entire life....
My dad has told me some things...but I still need to learn much more.
So that's why I'm here.....and I have every right to be smiley
I have stated many times since I joined N.L. originally in December 2016 (under my old monikers).....that I stumbled on this site through a google search on "Nigeria".

I am on this site because:
1). I want to learn more about Nigeria....my other half...the 50 percent of my genes.....from my dad...my Nigerian blood.

Even if I didn't have a direct descent to Nigeria through my dad....I still may have ventured on this site and decided to want to know more about this particular country...which is something that Nigerians should want Black Americans to do.

You have said some things about the U.S......that I find troubling...but let me not de-rail the thread.

Hey so great to see you here.you are most welcome.I love your simple explanation with so much maturity.I asked because I wanted to know your motive....no pun intended but now that I know it's all good.
I am an African American too though not born in the US and I still learn daily about their cultures and all that.
But you see, this is the point am trying to make to the op,many others other than Nigerians are on this forum, people that want to learn and know stuffs about the country, this isn't what we should project to them about our country,Nigeria is far better than what you are reading here.my dear, you are in the wrong thread because the op is out to malign the country in such a way foreigners who read her stories would never have anything to do with the country, and majority of those who comments are mostly those using their current situations to judge the country and they want out at all cost,so I doubt if you can find what you are looking for on this thread.
But seriously,I need to know if there's anything you found disturbing that i said about the US,,I will be more than glad to address it explicitly.

Aunty, if you want to truly learn about Nigeria, buy yourself some Nigerian movies. You can also download some free from YouTube. I live in Nigeria and I can assure you that it is far better than what is projected here. Don't rely on a forum to create an opinion. Do you know that a lot of Nigerians who sold their properties and left are now frustrated but cannot return because of shame so they come here to say trash so that others can make same mistake?

Watch Nigerian movies, that should be your focus, you will learn a lot about Nigeria.

In case you need to rent a place when you come down, you can contact me

Lol @ Aunty!! I so love it!
I guess I'll be "Grandma" by 45..although I don't have any kids...lol.
I am an "aunty" to my niece and nephew though....but you guys in Nigeria call women "elderly" by 35...and having spirit spouses if not married by 30..lol.

Anyhow, are you kidding about watching the Nigerian movies to get a better feel for Nigeria?
I mean...my dad has a huge collection of over 500 movies that we (his children ) have purchased for him...and although I've watched about 15 or so total....I don't think I should rely on that as my measuring stick.
I'm not fond of the ones that have lots of "juju", "witchcraft", "spirit spouses", "laying curses on people", and such etc.
I am learning some things though....looking at the cities, villages, food, family, daily life etc.
But I have noticed that many of the movies I've seen, show the importance of marriage (very early), having kids, extended family, and making money!
That may not be the plot of the movies...but it's always in the background somewhere.
Lots of the movies focus on the village people leaving the village to go to the city (for a better life)....and many focus on going to "America"!

I like the way I'm learning about Nigeria......until I visit there...which is the best way to learn about the culture. I would need to be in the midst of the people and live daily....

You're an old member of this forum and have read countless post and threads about events in Nigeria of which that alone should have taught you a number if not more about Nigeria...as well as try to do your research online.

Also, you stated that your father have told you some things about Nigeria which I believe he was born and raised from?...that alone should have given you a more narrowed report about Nigeria.

Either way, please do not get carried away by watching some Nigeria movies and think that you now know so much about Nigeria?

I want to believe that you're a very smart woman and wouldn't advise anyone to just watch American movies and think they know so much about the U.S.

Haha in Nigeria we refer to single females we respect as 'Sister' or 'Aunty' it's not really about age but respect..The married ones
are called 'Madam' or 'Mama so and so'

Go to YouTube and type latest Nigerian movies and download. You can read the story lines before you download, many are not based on village life but even the village ones have lessons to teach about our culture. Those juju stuff you see is all African traditional religion practiced in some villages.

It's not in travel part of Nairaland that you will learn about Nigeria but the culture section.

.....

Welcome and good to see you.

Thanks a lot for the welcome. You have shocked me with your nice change of attitude....wow.
So you are African-American and not the son of a Nigerian politician? Quite interesting....
Yes...lots of people on this site are Africans, Europeans, Americans, etc,..and we are trying to relate to the giant of Africa-Nigeria.
Sir, if I even begin to tell you how I have had quite a roller-coaster ride on this site since I joined....you wouldn't believe me...or maybe you would. It was the reason I deactivated so many times within my 16-17 month stay here on N.L.....
Nigeria has a terrible reputation across the world (sorry to say)...ranging from being extremely mean to being labeled the "419" online romance and credit card scammers of the world..to being some of the most polygamous and corrupt men on earth.
Now those aren't my words...so don't shoot me.
But I know that some brilliant minds (my dad being one) hail from that country.
I don't like to get involved in politics, hence the reason I don't visit the "Foreign Affairs" room here on N.L.
I don't like to speak about the politics of America...cause...well....I don't know all of the in's-and-out's.
We have major problems too....but I just believe in being wise about how to approach issues.

I didn't see the Op's thread as being meant to disparage and demean Nigerians...
She was speaking through the lens of being a "naturalized citizen".....and explaining her experiences.
She was happy with her decision...point blank.
She was encouraging others who may want to take the step...
She presented her experience in a very fair manner...
Just so you know...I have "0" clue who she is. My only words to her were what I wrote much earlier to her in the beginning of the thread...
Don't know her from Adam...but what and how she wrote it was so eloquent.
I'm not looking for anything per se on this thread...I just happened to run across it as I look at threads on the Travel Section.
I explore many different sections here on N.L.....and am just soaking in how people relate to one another, how they view the world at large and how daily life is...

I was referring to the adultery statement that you made earlier and about visiting the "states/cities that matter" thing.
I'll have to look back and see about anything else you wrote...cause frankly, (and I must be honest), you were starting to annoy me with your posts here.

Nice meeting you!

Well...don't know about "old" member because I've only been on the site for about 16 months or so...but I have read countless threads.....you are correct....
I wouldn't advise anyone to just watch Nigerian movies as the basis for learning. That's likie telling foreigners to watch Hollywood movies--and form an opinion about America based on that undecided
That's what I was saying to the person who said to do that.....why would I rely on Nigerian movies (Nollywood) to paint a portrait of Nigeria?
Yes...my dad has told me much (and I don't want to reveal that here on the site)...it's just that I have never been to Nigeria...
I am doing research...much of it....
Trust me, I am doing multiple things and preparing myself for when I visit.
I like to converse with folks....so I am asking questions to Nigerians (the ones who are friendly enough) about some things.
Some of what has been said matches my dad's words...
My point here on N.L. is to interact with Nigerians...
As I've said countless times before, I have had very limited interaction with them where I've lived.

Watching Nigerian movies will make her realize Nigeria is better than what is projected on here? I beg to differ! On the contrary, it's going to show that what we say here is spot on and they still have a long way to go. Nollywood is a joke lmao.

You're right, @Mobilia. No matter what the plot is, you'll always see traces of worshipping money/the rich, looking down on the poor, equating happiness with riches, early marriages, women having to serve men, a woman's life is worthless if she doesn't have a husband, homophobia, any religion that's not Christianity or in some cases Islam is frowned upon, and everything is solved when the pastor intervenes. Your husband is drinking, cheating, womanizing? Just wait, the pastor will soon come and cast out the demon causing it. The list goes on.

Best way to learn about Nigeria will depend on what you really wanna know. You can talk to Nigerians who migrate, you can also talk to people who can speak without letting their emotions/patroitism cloud their good judgment. That's the only way you can learn. Also, remember you'll get a different treatment as a foreigner and may not get the real deal as to what the average Nigerian faces.

Don't get me wrong, Nigeria is still an interesting country. There's still a lot to catch your attention and so much to enjoy (depending on what you want). I lived over 3/4 of my life there yet I still learn about the country daily. wink

Oh wow....thanks.
See...this is what I mean by continually learning about the culture.
I've been called "Ma" and "Madam" here many times.... (which in America is a sign of respect).
I thought "Aunty" meant old spinster....lol...which is fine by me cause I happily embrace my age...and single status smiley

Thanks about the movies...and I've seen lots of them.
But I can't base my portrayal of Nigeria on them completely.
I visit the culture section a lot as well...my friend King San/go is over there just churning out his lovely articles!
I've read several threads in that room too...
But see, what turns me off is the debating which turns to insults, name-calling and tribalism.

Hope you give me a good deal (since you want to make the sale so badly) when I visit! Don't try to "play" me.....
You know I have my people over there....to stay with...free of charge smiley
