Limitless is a fantasy movie. Most sci fi movies are fantasy.

That drug have altered normal human behaviour giving him a superhuman mind, so it has crossed the line to a fantasy.
Actually, it isn't, it's sci-fi. Sci-fi & fantasy are usually bundled together as a genre, even though they should be seperated. Although, there are films that blur the line. The drug altering the brain is science fiction, it is altering the brain's chemistry to make it do things that could even be considered superhuman (or peak human condition if you're feeling less hyperbolic). Now, if the drug had turned it into a gateway to seeing supernatural/paranormal/magic elements, it would be seen more as fantasy.

First, let's break it down a bit, shall we? Movies are classified into 8 major categories (genre)

- Action.
- Adventure.
- Comedy.
- Crime
- Drama.
- Epics/Historical.
- Horror.
- Musicals/Dance.

and 2 major subgenre, there are others but these 2 are the major ones:

- Fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural)
- Biography (true story)

Subgenre can also double as themes (the soul of a film or literature), and as such can completely alter the identity of a genre. For instance, when you have a musical movie with a biography subgenre, what does that say? The answer is simple enough... it's not a fiction, period. The plot might have been slightly tampered with to make the story flow better on screen, but the fact remains it is based on an actual true story. The Greatest Showman is a musical but clearly defined by it's biography theme. Bottom line, it's not a fiction.

Then, you have a action oriented movies like the Fast & Furious franchise & Revenge. In the case of the later, as the plot played out on screen, what became instantly apparent? It isn't real. Most of what transpired aren't scientifically possible at all. From her fall, to her mortal injuries, to her remarkably quick recovery, to her commando-styled revenge on her assailants, I mean, who even taught her how to shoot anyway?... But, don't let that stop you from watching it, because the thriller is exactly what it's made to be: an action fiction flick, the fiction here being the subgenre, and thus the soul. In other words, the plot was weak by design, because it facilitated the theme to the fullest - it's meant to be a mindless adrenaline rush kind of a movie, you know, the kind that leaves you at the edge of your seat. You aren't supposed to overthink it, just relax and enjoy the ride. If you want believable stuff, then it'll do you good to avoid action oriented fictions as a whole. Non-action fiction have believable science to them, tho.

Btw, 24 is also fictitious. 85% of what transpired onscreen were an amalgram of bad science and bullsh*t. But hey, Jack is fighting terrorists, and terrorism is real so 24 must be factual! The truth: if a quarter of what happened in that tv show were to happen in real life, United States would have become another Chechnya, and Jack will be with his forefathers long before that. It's just as fictional as say Agent of Shield, the difference being in the later, it's less subtle.

@emboldened, well written. Aptly broken down. It's what I've been trying to explain. You forgot to add the nonexistent black aphrodisiac the lady took with qualities like making one feel no pain to the extent of cutting off one's body parts and blood wouldn't drop. All these points to the fact that it isn't real. Just a fictions adrenaline rush kind of movie made for one's entertainment only.

The 24 description is funny as hell. grin grin Only an amateur thinks such kind of a hero like Jack exists with different terrorist attacks aborted under 24 hours repeatedly happening on US soil and Jack always on time to thwart it. Who are they kidding? grin grin

I checked its genre on 3 different sites and none called Limitless a fantasy movie. All called it what it was - sci-fi. Sci-fi and fantasy are two distinguished genres.

I said some action movies are fantasy where i mentioned fake stunts.
For example, Fast and furious, everyone have this fantasy of racing with their car(s) at crazy speeds which was what the movie is based on.

Fast and Furious and Revenge both have fake stunts/logic. The difference is that the entertainment value of Fast and Furious is more so people didn't care about the fake logic unlike in Revenge where the person probably didn't enjoy the movie as much as he would like to, and hence started seeing cracks in the storyline.

I already said they're usually bundled together, even though they should be separate. Yes, even when you go to a bookshop. Yes, if you go to buy LotR on amazon or any actual shop, it will be placed in the sci-fi & fantasy (or sci-fi/fantasy) section, even though the books (& films) are clearly fantasy. So, I repeat, Limitless is NOT fantasy, it's sci-fi. It's literally based on science fiction, science that is not fact, i.e. science that does not exist. Drugs that alter the brain's chemistry already exist, but there isn't a drug that exists that alters it to Limitless' NZT's level (yet). Aldderall is probably the closest drug with its crazy focus properties.

Fantasy themed books like Lord of the Rings are found on sci-fi/fantasy section because they are actually science fantasy fiction (SFF), which is a subgenre of speculative fiction(SF). You said it yourself, science fiction is an unproven science, speculative at best, but doesn't exist, no? So what if we throw in some outlandish ideas while we're at it? It will cross the line into fantasy threshold. Limitless is a science fantasy for the fact that the science used is very wacky. It's a blurred line... thus, sff. There are actual pure sci-fi (without fantasy) books and films out there, for example, The Expanse and The Moon.

As in eh. It boggles the mind that some people actually believe that sh*t like that can happen in real life. It's very entertaining and all, and sometimes can even make sense in a stoned kind of way, but c'mon now, let's not blur the line between fiction and reality.

You mean they had to keep it basic and simple for a movie based on the fact that a Federal Reserve can be broken n robbed off untraceable notes after 53 attempts? I hear u ooo

One quote I love so much in the movie, "loose lips, sink ships"...

It's not a FACT. My whole point is that it's fictitious, but somehow you missed it. Go and try that in real life and let's see if you can even make it past the guards. Believe everything you see in that film at your peril.

For the irreality that a drug can alter a person's brain to limitless level has already placed it firmly within the realms of fantasy. It's a bad science, thus science fantasy. Fantasy is not always about things happening in an imaginary world, it's also when an idea or something is far removed from normal reality. Don't get it twisted.

Acrimony. I'd give an 8/10.

So, basically its a story about a woman who allowed destructive emotions to drive her literally insane. I thought I was crazy until I saw this movie, it hit me, I was nothing but a learner where she is grin grin

Art imitating life; indeed. I really have to commend Tyler Perry on this one.
There are women/men out there who can't handle moving on, their lives are forever attached to that one person. The movie had a huge message. So, it's not one of those predictable stories about cheating, it drives deeper than that. And yes, I'd love to see this all over again.

If we used your logic, then Ghost in a Shell, Lucy will be termed science fantasy. Fringe is not termed science fantasy, it's science fiction, even the show's name tells you that. That crazy fantastical science you're going on about is fringe science.

In fact, the Thor franchise is science fantasy. They've used Norse mythology, magic (or as the first Thor pointed out science we don't understand) and science (that we do understand).
