True. They made a lot of mistakes at the defensive end as well. I will blame that on inexperience and lack of team cohesion.

Good point about their tendency to over carry the ball. I was watching at work but that didn't keep me from occasionally screaming my head off sad

or defending for that matter.

What I saw in this game was that Nigerian players are still too instinctive and dependent on flair than their European counterparts.

sometimes the flair works- that 2nd goal was an amazing example- but you're never going to see space to dribble the same defender 5 times on the spot in any decent league.

A tactical person would have dribbled one time and passed the ball. The guy stood there dribbling the same man 5 times.

defending was a similar story. our guys were too quick to go to ground, or getting too attracted to the ball and opening gaps.

sorry..these guys ain't ready for real footy.

I think it comes more from the quality of the league they play at.

There are certain traits that would have been coached at of you by age of 18 in Europe. over-dribbling is one.
bunching is another.

There is clearly athlecticsm, skill and technique there for a lot of those boys, but tactical nous and decision making was lacking on several occasions

If Usman had lost the ball for that second goal, he would have rightfully been queried for not taking it first time.

I remember Usman holding the ball up for a long time in the midfield before eventually passing. You can't do that in a competitive game.

I blame him for the 3rd goal. But that was a beautiful match. I believe we still have some better players out there..
TheSuperNerd:
It is official... Our keeper is on a long thing... My goodness! What a strike but poor attempt from Femi to even have a go at stopping the ball... What kind of goalkeeping is this? I k ow he made a good one on one stop from Gameiro earlier in the half but indeed shaa... He has been shaky and has not been assured with shot stopping.

You can't do and come and go and be dancing atilogwu when you can release a pass or shoot. Flair will only get you so far.

Kudos to the guys. I must say I didnt expect to watch something this beautiful against a side who train everyday while the Nigerians barely meet themselves the first time 3 days ago.
Maximum respect to Diego Simione and Athletico who showed respect to the opposition by playing his best available squad and making a genuine attempt to win the game.
I honestly do not envy Gernot Rohr at this point, Nigerians have been been spoilt by the free flowing football on display in this game. If his team serves up a knee jerking performance at the world cup, Nigerian fans will take him to the cleaners.

Guys please let us NOT overanalyze this game or make it bigger than it is. It's purely a training ground game for Athletico Madrid. If you critically review the game you'll realize that Athletico Madrid could score whenever they feel like it. Anytime we score, they would just raise it up a notch and equalize. And once the game start drawing to the end, they promptly scored the winning goal.

Don't get me wrong, the boys played well ... all things considered, but you gotta realize that they played against a team that was going on vacation and just wanted to entertain the fans.

All I am saying is: Perspectives guys .... perspectives!

In all honesty, there was better cohesion and understanding here than seen in the so-called 'A' team.

The same A team walloped Cameroon in that same stadium in a WC qualifier.

Athletico were playing at 40-50 percent.. They were all in vacation mood except for Partey.

he dribbled him 3 times, the guy even faced his keeper , and still spread his leg in the wrong direction , thinking that Usman will play the ball in that direction ... Usman deserves some accolades for that brilliant performance .

Hey, I'm not saying they aren't good. But seriously at times the team play like headless chickens, and while those times are relatively infrequent, they should be a cause for concern.

Nothing like embarrassment my brother. It isn't necessary we play the biggest team. It is not a feel good game neither is it a peer game.

Last time we had something like that was Kano Pillars V Portsmouth

That so called A Team topped the toughest group in African WC qualifying history without breaking a sweat. You cannot compare the cohesion and quality of the A team to the B and C teams ever... Haba!

Let us not be carried away oooo... Maybe it is because some of you don't seem to understand that we indeed have fine talents scattered all over who aren't even in the A Team yet.
