Why Does Nigeria Have 250 Ethnic Groups But 515 Languages? by derealj(m): 3:04pm On May 25, 2018
I've come to notice that the Languages in Nigeria are listed as 515 but the Ethnic groups are only slightly more than 250. Does it mean that some ethnic groups have more than one language? If so what are the bases for classifying them as a separate Language. What are your thoughts??

The so called ethnic groups are not actually homogenous in culture, tradition, and language. Most of these ethnic groupings were based on the majority of people constituting a region and not the languages per se. Taking ondo for instance the arogbo and Apoi people are not Yorubas but the whole ondo is usually seen as purely Yorubas.

N.B these are people that don't understand each other at all

To me o Igbo as an ethnic group is homogeneous. Although dialectal differences do occur but. It's still Igbo. I don't understand how an ethnic group will be speaking another man's language and still be claiming different entity. Hausa serves as a lingua Franca in the North, but those other tribes that speak it still have their own language. Now if you have only Hausa as your tongue how are you a separate ethnic group.
