One lady has requested me like that before on Taxify. I was hurrying out of Island around 4:30pm when her request came in. Calling her, she told me one long story of how her car is not starting inside Walter Carington, and that I should start the trip and start coming; she wants to use my battery to jumpstart hers. I was already at MUSON, about to climb 3rdMB. I just told her my car brainbox will reset if I disconnect the battery, and drove on.
I could have turned around to help her, but I had a feeling, from her commanding tone, she was one of these "entitled" people who will feel they are doing you a favour

entire system resets, idle has to relearn, Car vibrates with A/C never remove your battery unless car has an issue.

The Uber business model started out as a ride share business for people who owned vehicles and wanted to drive to make extra money with their vehicle, this person was called the Partner-driver.

For instance, on your way to work, if you wanted to make some extra money with your vehicle instead of riding all the way alone with 4 empty seats, why not register on Uber and pair with someone who was going in the same direction as you and get paid for it.

Or if you were a student and you needed some extra cash to fuel your car, you could go on Uber, pick up a couple of fares and voila, you were able to fill your tank.

But as Uber became more popular, more people began to think the platform could function as well as an investment opportunity. Those people would buy vehicles, and employ people who were willing to work, to man the vehicle. This marked the birth of the Uber driver.

Because it was a new type of investment, nobody, not drivers nor partners knew the modalities to follow. There was no regulatory body to monitor proceedings, Uber itself didn't really care what happened between the partner and driver, as long as it (Uber) got paid its 25%.

So it was clear the industry would have to regulate itself. In true capitalist form, market forces would have to determine the modalities.

How much for weekly remittance? Did the driver keep the car overnight or bring it home to his partner after work? Who was responsible for repairs and damages between driver and partner. Etc.
Nobody knew. So the industry regulated itself.

When Uber started in Nigeria, the most popular model was percentage. The partner would give the car to the driver at 20% of earnings while paying for petrol and other expenses.

However as time went on, it started to become clear that percentages were not very efficient for both Drivers and Partners.
As drivers began to understand the business better, they started to yearn for a model that would bring them more freedom.
Partners were looking for a solution that would peg their earnings at a rate acceptable to them. Instead of the "many calculations little understanding" model that percentages signified.
The industry would once again regulate itself.

Enter the Rental model. It worked wonders as it was a more decisive model and both Partners and Drivers understood clearly where they stood. I give you my car for a week and you pay me a pre-determined amount at the end of the week.

Everyone was happy at the genius of this new system, it was perfect they thought. It meant less monitoring and calculations for Partners to do, which was fine by drivers, who wanted to be their own bosses. Less interference from partners was the way to go.

Of recent however, reports are rife of drivers not paying partners (complete) weekly remittance or damaging vehicles and absconding.

So it seems the industry is trying to regulate itself again.
Partners are now deciding to demand the weekly rental in form a security deposit in advance, before the driver can take the car. It's as of the partners are saying, "We are too exposed, let the driver too have some skin in the game. That way we can sieve out the drivers who are ready to put their money where their mouth is from the ones that aren't". And this makes sense. So much that there is a term for it in business; Risk management.

And it is going to change the entire industry.
Partners will become service providers, reminiscent of Car rental services such as AVIS and Hertz who rent cars out to prepaying individuals.

So long as drivers pass verification checks carried out by the partner and has a security deposit, partners will provide vehicles for rental. While closely inspecting the usage of such cars to make sure they are being used by drivers in the manners agreed pre-rental.

The paradigm shift is now complete. Finally, drivers can exercise the full freedom that ushered in the Rental model and Partners can breathe easier as this new model will protect both parties better.

Will it even work or will a new model emerge?
Will partners start to merge vehicles and resources to be competitive and better manage expenditure required to operate. Will we see a shift from the Individual to the corporate partner?

Nobody knows, but I am a hundred percent sure that, time will tell.

P.S. These are only my views.

Lwkmd!!!!. Most Taxify riders are sadists. First thing they will say in a very rude manner when you call or they call you after request acceptance is "Where are you? Come to so so and so place and they will leave you wondering if the rider is mentally deranged. "Had a similar experience, rider called after I accepted her request and was like come to the street showing on ur app and behold when I got there after 10mins of navigating through very bad roads and I called her to announce my arrival and she rudely said to me that the address on the app was wrong that she stays two streets away....... embarassed

Its been exactly one week now I began reading this thread from scratch and i just hit page 200. So far the knowledge I've gained on here for this business shouldn't be for free. Shout out to all the major contributors for the invaluable inspiration they've breathe into this amazing thread. Notably (in reference to pages 0 - 200) Gazzuzz, Romeo3 , Ogunvic41, blackylola, etc. I'd continue reading and should be up to pg 700 before I get my dl in 2weeks so I can also be a part of the story. If you had really followed the thread like you said u did.. U would have read the part that I said that "assurance". Will not eliminate all the problems, but it will help reduce it . Now the 10k assurance I stated is the least you should collect... if your car is in excellent condition or a tokunbo, why should you collect 10k deposit, when you can collect 20k... but I guess you read just to read not to read to undestand.. Now I said that if a driver is owing you ,you can use the deposit to cover the amount own ..and collect your car from him . You can also go after his guarantor to collect any balance own .. Half bread is better than none. But I guess you did follow this thread after all.. But at the end of the day, it is not really none of my business.. It is your money, headache ,not mine.. I do apologise for not minding my own business..

Wow what a story.

Please do you ever get a chance to speak with him after the incident?

And for everyone that has come to share their stories on the job, am definitely sure the new and upcoming drivers have learned one thing on the other from your story.

This is part of what makes you experienced. They (New & Upcoming) should have learned how to handle such situations if it ever happen to you on the job. Do not abscond, do show up, empathize with the rider and be human.
Although some riders are evil but am definitely sure you would feel better knowing that you apologized for your mistake and leave the rider with his/her conscious for whatever next step he/she takes with regards to the situation.

You also have see why using recommended phone is very advisable. You don’t know who your next rider gonna be.

Yes mistake do happen but please do show up and call the rider to apologize for the mistake. Don’t abscond.

Showing up and apologizing to the rider shows it’s truly a mistake but absconding means you did it intentionally.

Kudos to everyone who has come share their experience we appreciate you and I know upcoming drivers would appreciate this feedback more.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their story and God will definitely bless your hustle.

Thanks.

You are absolutely right.

One of the difficult things I have done in this business is driver recruitment.

A bad driver is a bad driver whether you collect Security Deposit or not and Yes, Security Deposit wouldn’t solve all issues but it reduce your loss in case of default.

There is no standard, you can choose to collect Security Deposit or not. The final decision is yours but please for the seek of your investment don’t ever compromised in your drivers recruitment.

Do follow you gut. If something doesn’t feel right, believe me it’s not right.

I wish you the best of luck in your driver recruitment.
