Nigeria's World Cup squad: Who's in, who's out?
DAMI UGBANE, KWESÉESPN
4:08 PM

After Nigeria's 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, KweséESPN run the rule over the Super Eagles' likely World Cup squad.

Goalkeepers: For a third game in a row, Francis Uzoho started in goal, earning his fourth Nigeria cap.

The Deportivo La Coruna shot stopper looked assured, which was an improvement on his performance in the March friendlies.

Based on the Eagles' line-up in the last three friendlies, Uzoho looks to have earned the nod and trust of the coaching crew to be the starting goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Who plays backup? Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi, barring any last-minute injuries, should make the team to Russia.

The pair have earned consistent invites over the last two years under Gernot Rohr, and their experience should also count for something.

Who misses out? Dele Ajiboye, an excellent goalkeeper on his day, will likely get the chop.

Despite an eye-catching performance against Sudan in the semi final of the African Nations Championship, his inability to upstage Ezenwa as the home-based Eagles' number one might ultimately have cost him.

Defenders: One of the easier selections to make based on the team's line-up in recent games. Rohr appears to want two specialists for each position, so Nigeria are likely to take eight defenders to Russia.

The usual suspects Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Shehu Abdullahi and Elderson Echiejile realistically appear set to be Nigeria's starting defence against Croatia.

Kenneth Omeruo, who has being in good form with Kasimpasa, came off the bench against the DRC and he still awaits his first international start since March 2017.

Like Joseph Yobo four years ago, Omeruo's spot in the squad isn't secure, but his international experience should see him on the plane, particularly considering that Balogun is prone to injury.

Chidozie Awaziem, Brian Idowu and Tyronne Ebuehi should complete the defensive unit.

The new Benfica right-back, in particular, has gradually come into his element, impressively settling down in the international setup.

Hopefully, Ebuehi should shake off the cramp which led to his substitution against Congo and feature in his first World Cup.

Who misses out? Stephen Eze, who was a late call-up to the team, should miss out, and hasn't yet featured under Rohr.

Ola Aina didn't help his case for an inclusion in the World Cup party on Monday. The Chelsea man was unnecessarily casual on the day, careless in possession, and gave away a needless foul which resulted in a penalty.

Could he have lost out to Idowu, who is more business-like in his approach and also offers versatility.

Midfielders: Captain John Obi Mikel is a certainty, and the Tianjin TEDA man should be joined by vice-captain Ogenyi Onazi, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, John Ogu, Joel Obi and Mikel Agu.

However, Obi and Agu might find themselves competing for a final spot, depending on how many forwards Rohr wants to take to Russia.

Who misses out? For whatever reason, Uche Agbo is yet to add to his solitary international cap earned against Togo 11 months ago, despite being in the team consistently since October 2016.

Forwards: Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa are comfortably the men expected to lead the goalcharge in Russia.

New boys Simy Nwankwo and Junior Lokosa both had impressive debuts against Congo, and might not necessarily be in direct competition for a single spot, due to their individual qualities.

The Crotone man appeared to have sealed his place in the final 23 as he stands out with his unique playing style, while Rohr's decision to play Lokosa in a wide role suggests that he could be a contender to replace the injured Moses Simon.

Who misses out? Simon would have been in contention for a starting role had he been fit, but injury has denied him the chance to appear in a maiden major tournament.

Sometimes when am making calculations on who will be dropped from the 30man list or the 25man list that will heard to London, i always forget to add Uche Agbo among the casualties. Let this guy not go and sneak into the final 23man list without playing any game oo....

I really had to eat my words after lokosa display...... and i have learnt from that.

nwakali in this team will play and contribute better than agu and oga Joel.....

that both players have barely create one reasonable assist or even one shot on goal from all the minutes they have amount upon playing for the super eagles.....
Talent isn't totally limited to big clubs alone bro. That's what some people don't understand about this sport called football.

The team that played Vs ATM especially in midfield impressed me more than the so called S.E main squad and they should add Utin biko as LB Aina was sooooo lazy, casual, slow and sloppy with his passes wonders if that's how he played for hull to amount such number of appearance.

Our midfield is bereft of technics and creativity that is why i am endorsing a trio of Ndidi Iwobi and Mikel (aka N.I.M) with Mikel and Ndidi playing behind Iwobi. Iwobi has shown to be more lethal and powerfully clinical when played as an AMF.
And you think Rohr will ever play Mikel from deep?

Aside from that, If you take a good look at Iwobi's performance when saddled with the responsibly of the 10 role. He now and then sends wrong passes that lands directly into an opponents feat. He often makes awful mistakes in the heart of midfield. He doesn't have that ball holding ability that Mikel possesses. We all see how he (Mikel) stubbornly holds onto the ball even when sandwiched between to opponents, practically by putting it between his feet. And forcing them to commit a foul on him. This is very essential. Mikel is too matured to be withdrawn from such role especially in our first game.

BTW, cant some of the DMs play CD?

If we have like 1 or 2 that can play CD if need be, then we should take fewer CBs.

Another option: Do we have CBs that can play DM?

Shehu is DM but can play RB. I would want us to have more attacking minded players than defence becaude goals win games and not defending.
That's why we need more AMs than DMs. About the defense, you think Rohr has would ever try some DMs in the defense?

That's fake news. Shehu is great at overlapping, did so in the Olympics and also for the national team. Many times he overlaps and is not passed the ball that can't be his fault. The guys is a complete full back plays at both ends just fine.

That is why mikel obi is really important with his long range pass, onazi tried it yesterday but i wasn't feeling it.
This team would go into world cup to try to absorb pressure and break with a counter attack but i doubt if this team can really absorb lot of pressure because yesterday they all got tired fast.
That is not the team that is going to play in Russia. Half of that team will either be dropped or be on the bench. So you've got no point.

Ebuehi is quicker off d blocks. It gives him a very big advantage over quick wingers. Shehu doesn't have it, more so shehus positioning is always suspect. Sorry people will attack me, but its d truth. I pray he plays against England. Then we will have a clearer view.

Apparently, the Ramos move on Salah is illegal in Judo. We learn everyday.

Waki-gatame is a dangerous technique. That's why it is not allowed in Judo to use for transition to ne-waza. What do you think about this foul yesterday evening in the #UCLFinal between #RMALIV? pic.twitter.com/mHmADyG7LB— European Judo Union (@europeanjudo) May 27, 2018

Mr Jigsaw you are a very good analyst, i am just trying to proffer some sort of recommendation to the midfield mix to add fluidity, flair and dominance, It is not entirely out of place to feature two AMFs with Ndidi now playing behind as a cover for the defense. Apart from Mikel, who else is more technical and a better passer of the ball than Iwobi
