Learn how to sew for free

STRICTLY FOR BEGINNERS

This morning i will be sharing with you Sewing Tools and Equipments that you need to have as an absolute beginner!

I will be listing some of the sewing tools you cannot do without as a designer, but I think some of you already have them and maybe don’t know they can be used this way!

1. Scissors
You need them to cut your fabric and thread. I would suggest you buy tailor’s scissors, they last nearly forever and can be sharpened when they start cutting less. It is advisable to buy a small scissor to cut thread tails and avoid to cut fabric too.

A Warning: never use your scissors for anything different from fabric (or thread): never with paper (i.e. cutting patterns), plastic nor other materials, or they will lose their sharpening soon!

2. Measuring Tape
Depending on your preferences, you can use a measuring tape with centimeters or inches (or both, featuring cm on one side and inches on the other). As you might guess, these sewing tools are used to take measurements,

3. Needles
You’ll need needles for sewing by hand and for the domestic sewing machine. You can recognize the sewing machine ones because the eye is near the tip of the needle and the hand sewing kind has it on the other end of the shaft.

Tip.1: you need to change your sewing machine needle most often than you can think (or actually do).

Tip.2: use a specific kind of sewing machine needle for every type of fabric: there are denim needles,ballpoint needles for knits/stretch, twin or eventriple needles and many more; choose a proper size too, basing on your fabric thickness.

4. Pins and Pincushion(s)
Pins are meant to keep the fabric in place while cutting or sewing; you can buy the all metal kind or the ones with the colored head. There are different sized pins both in length and thickness, to start just choose the regular ones: you can get the ball point (for knits) or the thinner ones. To collect your pins, you can use are purposed box/can/jar, get a fancy magnetic pin bowl, create a nice pincushion or wrist pincushion!

5. Iron and Water Sprayer
Pressing while sewing makes the difference between homemade and handmade and it make it look neat and sweet.

6. Seam Ripper
A Seam Ripper is your best friend, believe me, or not! His primary purpose is to cut seams, both wrong seams (think when you sew together wrong sides instead Right Sides Facing… how many times!!)or existing seams on garments to be refashioned; you’ll find it useful to open your buttonholes if you’ve made them with a sewing machine: this is one of those versatile sewing tools!

7. Chalk/Pen/Marker
This is one other tool u cannot do without. There’s a specific tailor’s chalk you can use when marking on ur fabrics. One of the advantages of using a chalk over marker or pen is that it can be erased even before u are through with sewing and it is advise to use wen the work with be done within a day but if you wont finish the work the same day you are drafting it, it better u draft a pattern, use marker to mark so that whenever you are ready to sew u will not need to measure again.

8. Measuring Book
This is a book where you record your clients measurement and other details of ur clients whenever needs arise to call them.

9. Thread
You can’t sew without threads! The most used are cotton (for woven fabrics) or polyester (better for knits) threads, but you can find also nylon and wooly nylon (used in sergers), metallic, silk, rayon…The other things to look at is the thickness of the thread; the most used are weight n°50, that means that 50 km of this thread weighs 1 Kg!

Tip: Use the same thread kind on both spoon and bobbin, except when using embroidery thread or denim hem thread; this will minimize hazard of thread breaking.

10. Sewing Machine
Sewing Machine is one of the tools needed by any fashion designers. It is used to join fabrics together. It comes in different form, manual or electric. It has different maker, you can start with the regular *Black Head* Machine. And if you can afford the electrical Machine you are good to go. Just visit the market and get urs.

It a flare/circle short gown. You can make a top out of this tutorial as well. You can rock it with a jean trousers, skirt or pant trousers.

As i've said yesterday, i will need to start from the basis for beginners to follow us.

Now that we have know all the tools we will be working with, the next thing to do is to know how to take accurate body measurement.

For every fitted garment you see out there, well structured dresses, it as a result of accurate measurement taking by the designers.

So we will be looking on how to take accurate body measurement today

For us to take accurate measurement, we have to know the two phases or types of measurement.

TYPES OF MEASUREMENTS

1. Measurement by Length/Vertical

These are measurements taken from shoulder downwards.

It is in this order for the vertical/length measurements.

a. Shoulder to shoulder length

b. Arm length

c. Waist length

d. Hip length

e. Body length (kneel, 3/4 of full length)

2. Measurement by Circumference/horizontal

These are measurements taken round i.e. Everything taken round which are:

a. Bust round

b. Waist round

c. Hip round

d. Arm round.

HOW TO TAKE BODY MEASUREMENT

✅ Back/Shoulder

This is measure from one shoulder bone to the other shoulder bone.

✅ Neckline depth

This can be measured across the cleavage area from the shoulder line or u measure down from ur shoulder line to where u want the the neckline to stop.

✅ Sleeve Area

Sleeve Circumference is measure around the arms where the sleeves should end.

Sleeve Length is measure according to your preference, it could be cap sleeve, short sleeve, 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve.

Armhole depth is measure round ur armpit area. It shouldn't be too tight or loose so that the cloth can be made fitted in as much is not iro n buba.

✅ Bust Area

Upper/Bust/Under Circumference is measured by wrapping the measuring tape around your back and across upper bust line, the fullest part of your breasts and under bust line respectively. Do not pull the tape too tight or hold it loose. It should sit Conveniently without it slippery off

Upper/Bust/Under length is measured from shoulder to the upper bust line, nipple, and under bust line respectively.

✅ Waist Area

Waist Circumference is measured by
wrapping the measuring tape around the smallest part of your waist area. It is usually bellow the ribs and above the hips of any individual and it is mostly just above the belly button.

Waist length is measured from shoulder to waist line which is the narrowest part of the body.

✅ Hip Area

Hip Circumference is measure around the hip line i.e. the broadest part of the body.

Hip Length is measure from shoulder to the hip line i.e. the broadest part of the body.

✅ Length of the Garment is measure from the shoulder to where you want the garment hemline to be. Tape should go over the fullest part of the bust.

THEORIES OF BASIC BLOCK

The simplest definition I will give to a Basic Block is anything created to wrap up the body of an individual which can be made into different styles.

Basic Blocks are used in the fashion industry to speed up the process of making patterns and for accuracy of a pattern in order to ensure a better fit.

Basic blocks are developed using measurements provided, they can be made using an individuals measurements.

Many Designers and Manufacturers have in house Models and use these measurements in the development of their own Basic Blocks.

Blocks are chosen according to which design they wish to create, it can be altered if there is need to be.

An individual can develop their own Basic Blocks using personal measurements to enable a more accurate fit to use again and again.

Basic Blocks comprises of five types which will be explained in our next

TYPES OF BASIC BLOCKS CONSTRUCTION

- Front Block Bodice: This feature a front neckline, armpit area, dart area and waist area. It is usually at the front side of any individual.

- Back Block Bodice: This is the opposite of the front block bodice. It is usually at the back side of any individual and it features the following;
zip Allowance, neckline, dart, armpit n waist area.

- Skirt Front Block: This feature low waist(tommy area), dart, hip, hem. It is also worn in the front area.

- Skirt Back Block: This has zip indication at the back, hip, dart, tommy and hem. It is also worn at the back of an individual.

- Sleeve Block: This is quite different from all other block mentioned above. It feature the bicep, armhole and the hem of the sleeve. This is join to the arm area in the front & back bodice created.

NOTE: Front & Back Trouser Block can alternate the Skirt Block.

This block construction is very important when making any garment because this is where u interpret the measurement you have at hand into a proper dress/blouse etc.
