I wasn't even aware of those websites you mentioned, but it's gratifying that the best minds at this specific genre shared similar sentiments.

Buffy is the 'originals' of the vampire genre, the pioneer, the one others try to imitate and surpass. The gold standard only few has come very close to touching over the years... the one that invented the infamous vampires/werewolves rivalry. Buffy is always gonna top that list until another show completely reinvent the genre. The Strain tried and failed. Penny Dreadful tried and also failed. True Blood tried to put a mature spin on Buffy and had some degree of success. The Vampire Dairies straightup tried to ride on Buffy's mantle but shot itself in the foot later, and never recovered. The spinoff, The Originals is just a bad Angel ripoff (Angel is Buffy' spinoff btw), and arguably the worst vampire show I have ever watched. The acting on that show is terrible. I tried watching it once and couldn't even make it more than 5 mins.

All these shows pale in comparison to Buffy for the same reasons Black Mirror will always be 2nd best to Twilight Zone: the first of it's genre and thus the gold standard.

True Blood set out to tell a story, and it did for the most part. It took a detour here and there but made it back to it's true path in the end. It's a solid enough supernatural themed (vampire, werewolves, etc) show.

All the sites used Buffy as the gold standard. All were positive reviews. I'll have to see it before True Blood once I'm ready.

I LOLed when you said Originals is the worst vampire series ever. LMAO. I haven't seen enough vampire series to know if it's the worst, but one thing is for certain though, the script writers/producers ran out of steam after season 2 hence why it's ending so soon this season 5. It is ending too quickly for lack of ideas, but it wasn't bad TBH.

I have to give The Originals props for knowing it's audience. Some shows have diluted content but are geared towards adults, and inevitably, generate poor viewership. But, this show targets the late teen demographic specifically, and has become a super show to them. Smart.

The Originals is made for specifically young adults demographic (teens), so kiddo, I won't judge you or even question your childish taste in tv series, but please, I take god beg you, stay away from my mentions. It's highly embarrassing when secondary students quote me just to talk rubbish.

I am responsible if you feel offended Mr koice .I started the whole argument .I don't know why some people can not mention someone without been aggressive with it .

No matter how stupid our point is ,we are suppose to say it the way we see fit and walk away without calling names .

The Americans: It ends tonight, sadly. This season is off the hook. The tension in every episode is palpable.

Trust: I can't recommend this show enough. It's at the edge of your seat entertaining, and of course the added bonus of seeing my childhood hero, Brendan Fraser (The Mummy franchise), strut his stuff onscreen again, after a long absence from showbiz.

Save Me: What an emotional rollercoaster.

This is why people need to pay more attention...

- First, I never said that Penny Dreadful & The Strain tried to emulate Buffy at all. I said, they tried to 'reinvent' the genre (supernatural), ie, they tried to do something completely different from the mainstream, and... failed, if we were to take anything from their abrupt conclusions.

- 2ndly, Penny Dreadful belongs to the 'supernatural' genre same as Buffy . Supernatural genre is a broad term that covers not only vampires but all kinds of mythical elements, thus, dragons, witches, fairies and gods are allowed... which bring us to...

- 3rdly, it's a mistake thinking Penny Dreadful is unique from the rest of the genre because of it's less focus on vamparism and more focus on the fringe elements of the supernatural by the importation of Dracula and the Frankenstein monster among others. Nope. See, Buffy did that already, it had demons, half demons, witches, Undeads, demigods, ghosts, monsters, robots, gods, spirits, etc. Vampires and werewolves were only just a small part of it. Thus, Penny Dreadful owes it's uniquemess to it's presentation not application. In application, it's a lot like Buffy and the rest, but in presentation, it's remarkably different.

- 4thly, none of the shows I mentioned in a previous post were strictly about vampires, thus it would be wrong to classify them as 'vampire shows'. They are more accurately tagged 'supernatural shows' for the fact that anything goes. It's not all about vampires and werewolves, often times, witches and gods are thrown into the mix too.
- Yeah, you're right. They didn't try to emulate Buffy and that's why I used the phrase 'toe the line of '. Which takes us to my next point, which is the fact that Penny dreadful wasn't trying to reinvent the supernatural genre separate from the mainstream but actually succeeded in carving out a whole new distinct and separate niche for itself in the genre.
You accurately mentioned that its importation of various supernatural characters and focus on fringe elements does not make it unique but what does is that it's primary focus was on the lead characters struggles with faith amidst all the chaos. (emphasis on faith). which is what I meant by supernatural philosophy and religiosity.
Moreover, its ending on the third season was anything but abrupt. It was well planned and seamlessly executed.

-Its application is similar to Buffy in terms of character diversity as you rightly stated. But that doesn't necessarily mean it was taken straight out of Buffy's playbook (although not entirely sure on the shows initial inspiration).
And I emphasized the Vampire tag only because that seemed to be revolving point in the different views others (you inclusive) have expressed.

I don't think it did. Certainly, it was a peculiar show, but in the end it didn't last long enough to leave a lasting impression on the fleeting memory of man.

That's what I was saying before: It's uniqueness is in it's presentation, unlike others in that genre.

I'm pretty sure it was cancelled. I remember reading up the reasons of the cancellation on Hollywood Reporter back in 2016. In short, they ran out of ideas, and decided to end things on season 3.

Kaziar:

Penny Dreadful was it's own show and did it's own thing entirely independent of others in the genre. It tried to revolutionized the supernatural genre, alas, it hit a wall, but it will always be in my top 5 of the greatest supernatural shows of all time.

Kaziar:

Guilty as charged. I do that deliberately in order to be understood. Some folks are not very well versed on this genre stuff and may not understand otherwise.

It certainly left its imprint on me wink.
it tops the list of my favorite supernatural shows. I still think you are mistaken about it's supposed abrupt cancellation.
nice debating this point with you though wink

Any kind of good show. I have seen handmaid tale, outlander, the original, the good doctor, blind spot, designated survivor and many more I can't remember. Any good show is okay by me either, action, historical, myth, supernatural.

I haven't watched any vampire genre in series apart from TVD and Originals. From from extensive googling of sites that rated various vampire series, one was consistent all through - Buffy The Vampire Slayer topped all their lists. True Blood and TVD was usually in top 5 but on some, TVD was around 6th or 7th while True Blood was consistently in top 5. Also in some top 5 where both TVD and True Blood were in it, TVD topped True Blood in some, while True Blood returned the favour in some. I guess it boils down to personal choices, but from observation, I'll say True Blood edges TVD but wins Originals hands down.

One of these days, I'll check out True Blood, although the general consensus was that the show tanked when Alan Ball left the show. Which is not surprising because TVD too tanked towards the last 3 seasons especially when Damon started dating Elena and the producers knew and ended it.

That's one thing about most series, at a point they get boring.
thing is that True blood lost it when vampires starting walking the street and making themselves known. Even if vampires exist, they will remain a secret organisation. And yes TVD lost it after season 4 abi 5. Immediately they killed Silas and witches started becoming immortals

Started Marco Polo yesterday, already watched 2 episodes and sincerely it's boring me.
I also started one British series "the replacement" as well. That one is not bad though.
Now in S5 of both "living single" and "entourage".
