Gareth Southgate said:

“In the period leading up to their goal they changed the system and it took a little while to work out how to deal with that.
“Once we did that, we managed the game pretty well but there was a six or seven-minute period where we didn’t adjust and it was decent exercise for us although we wanted it to be a little bit more comfortable.”

Our tactical switch confounded them. We need to utilise even more the power of our flexibility and unpredictability.

they could have paid darely for that six minutes , a more lethal team would have taken advantage of that ugly 6minutes

Where was Aina when Shehu and Ebuehi were putting up man of the match performances on the RB position

He didn't struggle enough for the RB position and messed up in the LB position

Why do you think Fabian Delph is in the world cup because he performed in an unfavorable position and was noticed to play in his preferred position.

How many minutes and how many games did Aina play for the SE.

Aina primarily is a RB to have a level playing field he should be tried in his preferred position. However, that not withstanding did he get a fair chance

How many minutes of SE playing time did he actually get.

Finally, how on earth can we be taking a player who has started to decline so badly that he failed in lowly Turkey went to Belguim and started playing 2nd division in Belgium and not even first choice. Finally this player has lost pace he is now a liability. That player was taken ahead of Aina.

THAT'S A TRAVESTY.

I really don't see how we can justify taking Onazi even Joel Obi has been disappointing.

The way Aina has been treated will be great boost for other players considering playing for Nigeria.

Simy is our biggest threat going foward, i prefer him to Ighalo and Iheanacho, he is the kind of striker that we need and will do wonders with Iwobi as the AM. Believe me he is more of a threat than Victor Moses. I suggest we pair him with Victor Moses in a 3-5-2 formation, that is, if Moses is not played as a WB, or with Ighalo. Looking at a our squad depth, it is best if Victor Moses plays as a wing back.

Iwobi wouldn't have made the three Lions team as at the time he made his debut for Nigeria because he was an academy player but yesterday he was the best rated Nigerian on the field.

Iwobi playing for the SE increased his stock.
If the new Arsenal manager was watching our game yesterday, he'll just be saying to himself "this is the iwobi some people want make i offload, I swear them no wish me well" grin grin

Controversial opinion, but honestly speaking Aina doesn't look to me a solid player. Even while he played LB, he never made daring runs that suggests he has it in him to offer something extra. He made a dogs dinner out of the chances given to him.
After the the world cup, he has a big fight to claim either of the fullback roles in the team because certainly, Usman Mohammed will come back to fight out the RB spot with Ebuehi.
The confidence of the team managers to hand him the captains band against Athletico and the yoe man's job he did in that game suggests to me that he is the guy Ebuehi will contend with. I dont care how anyone feels about it but Aina doesnt hold a candle light to Usman Mohammed, expect of course we want to be economic with the truth and common sense flies out of the window because Aina is London born.

No where enough to make any kind d of deductions about his ability.

Since Aina's first debute he has had more game time than likes of : Ogu, Awaziem, Omeruo and Agu.

You may however argue he was not played in his favorite position.

Spot on Aina didn't take his chance

Musa Mohammed as captain against Atletico has nothing to do with any special interest from managers cos he already had his cap with eagles,so naturally he is the leader.

Musa Mohammed better than Aina, well your opinion just like your opinion on Osas Okoro as the best Nigeria RB.

Oh Aina London born, this should not be an issue in analysing his performance.

The young man can still come good with his age cos have watched him as RB and is cool, technically gifted as a player.

I beg to differ. The boys need a calm and isolated place to concentrate and train properly. The camp in Austria provides a place to carry out necessary preparations without the distractions of an urban area.

Omeruo has improved
Ebuehi does not need to prove anything
We are no longer looking for a RB...There is Ebuehi,Aina....no need using Shehu as a makeshift...He is a DM..period...We are gradually sorting out our defence line...perhaps 90%...our LB is settled...we have different combination at CB....depending on the opposition and fitness of the defenders....In all,i think this experiment with Shehu should stop...it does not help our team build...Post- Russia...He should fight in DM..though that side is overloaded...
Yeah I noticed omeruos improvement also never in a hurry to give out passes but calculates his passes and when to clear his line

Abi na forest dem go dey before? undecided The serene environment only contributes to their relaxed concentration levels but serious business is what they are there for. Not to take a troll daily around the beautiful sceneries just to appreciate mother nature.

Ogenyi Onazi determined to rectify Wembley mistakes

Nick Said, KweséESPN

ESPN.com | 3:43 PM WAT

Ogenyi Onazi has admitted that he played a poor game against England and that he needs to improve before the World Cup.

The midfielder was hooked at halftime after a nightmare first 45 minutes in Nigeria's 2-1 defeat to England at Wembley on Saturday, and told KweséESPN that it was a "disappointing game" for him.

"Saturday was a really disappointing game for us, especially for me in the first half. But this is part of life, this part of football. You just need to learn from your mistakes and then you move on," he said.

"It didn't go well for me yesterday. It was really not a good game. It was not me. But this is the game. Sometimes you play good, sometimes you don't. You just look forward to making a good outing in the next game.

"Thank God this is preparation. When we get to the World Cup proper, things are going to get better."

Onazi uncharacteristically gave the ball away a number of times and missed several tackles. In fact, his mistake and subsequent missed tackle allowed England to go forward and score their second goal through Harry Kane.

The midfielder took responsibility for the error but explains that Nigeria's first half formation left the midfield isolated.

"I have to get better. That wasn't me yesterday. I don't really want to think about the game too much," he added.

"The problem we had yesterday was the formation, it was not going really right. I did a lot of running on the pitch because we were always one man short on the defensive part of the game.

"The second half was much better because we played the same pattern with them and everybody was with his man."

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr told reporters at the post match press conference that his team needs more work to be ready for the World Cup, something Onazi agrees with.

"We have a lot of things to do. We have a lot to put in place. We haven't really had time to train really well, to really work on our system. Because we have one system," the Trabzonspor midfielder continued.

"Now, we are trying to play other systems and I think we are going to get much better."

Nigeria departed for Austria on Sunday morning for the final phase of their pre-World Cup training camp.

They will play the Czech Republic in a friendly on June 6 before heading off to Russia on June 11 where they will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the Group phase.

After watching that game at Wembley again, I must admit we didn’t own the second half.
In fact it was pretty even, they prolly created more chances than us. We just did far better than we did in the first half.

Colin udoh- The fickle nature of Nigeria football fans. You’re like kids, always looking to discard the old toy once a shiny new one pops into view.
And always so comically predictable.
Each time the cadet teams (U17, U20) Do well at the world stage, the immediate refrain is, yup, you guessed it “keep them together”. As if it’s possible for a national federation to keep and maintain players like a clubside.

When national team players have a bad day at work (like Onazi Ogenyi Eddy and Joel Obi at Wembley), they are instantly declared “finished” and a posse of new names trotted out in their stead as the savior.

The same Onazi that was once hailed by these same folks as the savior. Yes, I remember when NIGERIA failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup, these people savaged the entire team, and the coach for not calling up Onazi, stopping just short of saying he could not only qualify for the Nations Cup all by himself, but could possibly win the whole damn thing too, then bring the trophy home by walking on water!

Today, the same Player has become their villain of the piece. Joel was hailed as the next best thing since sliced bread. There were even whispers of how he could bench everyone in that midfield, including Mikel kpakpa. Today, he should not go to the World Cup.

Now there’s a shiny new toy to sink those grubby fingers into. His name? Kelechi Nwakali.

Just like Onazi in 2011, Nwakali has barely two seasons of senior club football under his belt, but after watching him in one excellent game, against an arguably jaded team, folks want him to take over the world.

Deja vu anyone?

All of a sudden Gernot Rohr, who has watched the player over and over again, has tapes of him, and even invited him to come play the game where our Royal Ficklenesses saw him, does not know enough to leave the Player out of a WC squad he thinks neither Nwakali is ready for.

But all of our Royal Ficklenesses, majority of whom have never been 100 feet of the Nwakalis, feel they know more and better than a man who put them in that spotlight in the first place!

Yes, Onazi had a bad game. Yes, Joel had a bad game. And yes, both deserved to be subbed and need to work extra hard to prove themselves again.

But that knee-jerk reaction of throwing them under the bus, is just not the right way to go. Not any more.

Nigerian football fans must learn to be wiser and think a little deeper than just skin deep.

Players will have bad games. Including the shiny new Nwakalis. Feel free to criticize them. On the basis of that bad performance and let them know they have to improve. But don’t be too quick to cast players away.

We must learn to get behind the players when they fall down and support them to get back up.

They will give you more and lay down more in good times when they see you have their backs in bad times.

Croatia team. Typically organised European team. Gragra of the baltics. Physicality that does not last 90 minutes. I watched the Brazil match and was a bit pleased. Modric can be easily tamed. Just let Ndidi shadow him. Once we can neutralise him, Perisic can get a yellow and will not be up to it.
They will play into our hands with their static defence. I doubt we will have plenty shots on target against them because they will try to contain us in the midfield. However, with V.Moses and perhaps a pacy Musa later on, we can hurt their rigidity.

Iceland...we will beat.
Argentina will beat us as usual.

We play France in 2nd round and come home after that.

I hope he is given the chance to prove himself in that his natural role after the world cup.

No 2. Tyronne Ebuehi

Believe me.. I feel very bad about Aina's exclusion as much as u do.... but were you not among those that convinced us sometime ago that he could play both RB and LB comfortably?
