Just say the truth! A simple "No, I have not taken any exam." is all you need. Also, I've not heard about Jamestown CC (don't fret, I also didn't hear of Duke or Morehouse until I saw them on Nairaland), and I don't wanna Google it. The concept of "nice school" is not clear-cut. What do you mean by "nice"?

If you think you're a credible student, and you have plans for life after studies, go and face the VO with a good case for yourself.

Really You, an American citizen, never heard of Duke

You'd be surprised at the number of things American citizens haven't heard of. smiley Now I've heard of it, life moves on. I only knew Harvard and Stanford grin

Please can anyone give me information about studying education/teaching maters. I have carried out my own research but i would like to hear from someone personal experience thank you

before you pick an education / teaching course. take note of the following:

1. most education Masters don't come with funding except some science educations like maths, chemistry and biology. and to get the funding, you need to have a super great profile.

2. most education programs not targeted towards lecturing, leadership or management won't sound convincing to VO especially Masters . like why will you want to spend millions of naira to study education and return back to Nigeria to compete with mushroom primary and secondary school applicants?

3. most education programs don't come with Assistance-ship.

4. Almost all education Masters can be completed online. 98% of schools that offer Masters in education have online options, except for education in sciences that requires research and practical.

5. if your plan is to stay back in USA after your program, you can't do any elementary or high school teaching job without obtaining a teaching license in USA, and to obtain the license, you have to go for "licensure" program which most schools won't allow international applicants to partake in.

my advice. if you have Bsc(ed) in science education, you may consider going for Masters in science major. for example, chemistry education Bsc has advantage of either going for Msc in chemistry or Msc(ed) / Med in chemistry education. Msc in chemistry is STEM while the later is not. with this, you will have a wider option of shooting your shots to apply for jobs in science field with your MSc or jobs in Education field with your Msc + Bsc. and the truth is that, you can always enroll for a one year licensure program in the USA with your education Bsc.

same as accounting education, finance education, economics education and other top education Bsc, i will advice you shot for the Majors as Msc instead of the Educations.

if your Bsc(Ed) is none sciences like religious education, history education, yoruba education, adult education, and other "non-sellable" educations, i will advice you shot for masters in Educational leadership, Educational management, Curriculum etc as these have more prospects than Msc adult education and msc religious education.

like i said. 98% of schools in USA offer education program 100% online. if you want to minimize cost and risk, you may consider online programs

So my experience.
Interview date: 8th of June
Time: 6:45

I got there 5:35, then they called 6:30 first then 6:45 next. We went through the whole security checks and all, man I was scared afff but I was over prepared so I kept my cool.
Got in and did the thumb print then queued for the visa. So quickly, people abeg apply to a good school and answer the question they asked you pls. A girl went before me and nailed herself. She did well until she was asked until she was asked to mention the schools she applied to ( iglobal, and 2 other universities that are not that bad) but immediately the VO heard iglobal, the VO asked the girl to mention the schools again, and that was when I knew she nailed herself. The funny thing is she wasn't going to iglobal, but she applied. She was also asked "did you take any exam"? She answered: I tool IELTS, but it was not required!!! I felt bad for the babe sha. So my own proper (in no particular order)

VO: Goodmorning (smiling)
Me: Goodmorning (trying to hide nervousness)
VO: so where are you going?
Me: Morehouse college, Atlanta Georgia
VO: To do what ?
ME: To get my bachelors degree in computer science
VO: how did you get to know about the school?
ME: it was introduced to me by Mrs ********* grin , who's the advisor at educationUsa, then I learnt more using Collegeboard big future and I used commonapp to apply
VO: Did you use this commonapp to apply to other schools?
ME: Yes, I did apply to 9 other schools
VO: Wow, you (I didn't hear the rest)
ME: Yes I applied to 9 then I mentioned (Davidson college and the rest)
VO: Davidson college? Where?
ME: North Carolina
VO: so why computer science?
ME: I chose to study computer science because I have a strong desire for innovations and would love to have a career in software engineering because virtually every industry in Nigeria today uses a computer, and a degree in this field would give me a career that is marketable in any business environment and with just one degree, I can work in the engineering field, medical field..e.t.c
VO: Good
ME: (smiling) grin
VO: Who's sponsoring you?
ME: I got $40k in scholarship per academic year and my aunt (VO cuts in)
VO: That's a huge amount of money (smiling)
ME: I was just relaxed at this point grin
VO: How did you get it?
Me: I took the SAT, TOEFL (cuts in again)
VO: What did you score on the SAT?
ME: I got 1430 on the new SAT
VO: That's a good score
ME: (I was just thinking about how I'll locate the pick up location) grin
VO: I've approved your visa.....

grin grin I heard the rest, but I can't remember rn. That's it broskis!! Thank you all
Hey congrats on your visa. I must say, you have an excellent SAT score why did you choose Morehouse? You could have had other top universities warring over you. But anyways, your hard work and work ethic will pay off massively wherever it is you are!

Well, tbh it was an easy decision for me cause I did apply to other top schools. First, I prefer attending a liberal art college and yes I applied to other competitive liberal arts colleges (Pomona college, Davidson college, Macalester college, Carleton college) but the painful part is I did not get in cause these schools meet 100% of every admitted students financial need. Probably they couldn't meet my need and that's why I didn't get in. For others I got into( elon university, saint Louis university, Louisiana state university and mcneese state university) I got little funding. Imagine elon university gave me $3k per academic year while Morehouse gave me $40k grin. I'm just another Nigerian na grin grin grin wink

if i am right, political science has not been made a subject yet in nigerian primary and secondary curriculum. so i am certain there is no way you will convince the VO of returning to nigeria to pick up a teaching job.

if i am right, i think Political science has a major (in science). this one is still better as you can convice the VO of returning to nigeria to pick up a lecturing job or resuming a job at the local government or state government level where you can work as a political analyst, PA to politicians, State secretary, or government appointees.

if your plan is to stay back in the USA, i am not sure thee is political science job field in elementary or high schools in USA. i may be wrong thou.

lastly, fields like these harldy get funding and assistance-ship . so you should ask yourself (why do i want to spend average of $50,000 "18million naira" ( 2 years expenses) on political science?.

if you can afford the expenses, why not?, you can give it a try.

another best option is to consider MBA, as any undergraduate degree can pursue

I remember your username. I just want to point something out to you. If you think repplying for a visa with a "ranked" school will guarantee your visa, I'm afraid you need a really good reality check. You will still have to work for your visa.

If you're asked why you changed to XYZ university in Oregon and all you can say is "it is a ranked school", it's just another futile effort. What's my point? If you're trying to get into other schools, this is the time to start asking yourself what you want, why you really want them and do your research and continue learning how to prepare for interviews.

Moving on, cost of living depends on so many factors. Like in any state, not all cities are the same so, where your school is/you'd live could be factors too. Oregon is a relatively expensive state to live in but remember: sometimes, the cheapest things in life aren't the cheapest. Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma are cheap states but there are so many places in these states you wouldn't wanna live in as a foreigner.

Don't rush any decision, wait for the next session and spend time preparing. Make better decisions and be self critical. Don't let your future be decided by a random, faceless person in another place like me and others here lol because in the end, you'll be the one to live with your decisions.

Always go for what's best for YOU, not what someone thinks would be best for them. I wish you the best.

Can I PM you @theamerican?

It's necessary to have your spouse with you while you're schooling far from home. Your spouse is your #1 companion and that's his/her purpose for coming. They don't usually deny a genuine F2.
