Good day Program and thanks for your immense contribution on this thread. I'm a PhD student with interest in telecommunications engineering however I'd love you to guide me on emerging research areas. Thank you sir

Welcome aboard! First which areas of research you have in mind or interest you? Will your research interest provide direct solutions, answer questions, nationalistic or have International usage? Answers to these questions will assist in popping the emerging research areas. Have you researched some of the current research areas in your field and notice any missing points you think needs enhancement?

What research have you done specifically? theoretical or practical/field research? Do you mind sharing few statements on that?

My Latest Research: Low-cost Electrochemical Biosensors for self-monitoring of Glucose for Diabetes Patients and Immunosuppressive Drugs During organ Transplants.

In my lab, We modified Screen-printed electrode with electroactive AgIO3/MgO nanorods and enzymes for fast self-monitoring of glucose level in blood, urine or sweat for diabetes patients. The device is robust, highly sensitive, selective and comparatively efficient. Using engineering economy analysis, the cost of production of our electrochemical biosensor is 1.2 USD and designed to be disposable.

Some of the Application of Electrochemical Biosensors:

1. Glucose monitoring in diabetes patients, other medical health-related targets,
2. Environmental applications e.g. the detection of pesticides, toxins and river water contaminants such as heavy metal ions
3. Remote sensing of airborne bacteria e.g. in counter-bioterrorist activities
4. Determination of drug residues in food, such as antibiotics
5. DNA biosensors for medical diagnostics, forensic science, agriculture applications such as fruit ripening and expire wines etc.

I have couples of undergrad, master and PhD students working on that. You will need atleast standard experience/knowledge/skills with:
1. Electrochemistry
2. Analytical Biochemistry/microbiology
3. Bio-instrumentation design
4. Basic engineering economy for the costing and benefit analyses.

Best wishes!

You can publish your undergraduate research irrespective of the field. As you journey thru ur MSc/PhD, you will have to keep publishing. Your publications does not have to be on a particular field. You can publish articles in any area of your specialization (e.g, any area of microbiology). Just obey one rule: your articles must contribute to knowledge. I have sent you an email containing list of other free journals. Cheers
pls can you send me an email containing other free journals?

Current Research: Bioelectricity generation and material recovery from wastewater

One of my Phd students is currently working on generating electricity via microbial fuel cell (MFC). This system is a 5 liter lab fabricated MFC Ut was used to treat oily wastewaters from university restaurants and simultaneously generated 2 mA electricity suitable to charge a mobile phone and laptop.

This is an hybrid MFC with breathable electrode.

I want to switch too, I want a PhD in corporate finance or financial management. Accountancy seem too boring to me at the moment.

Please encourage her. Research is like a hybrid yoga and when you go into it you won’t regret doing that.

Some of the advantages of research using myself as example:

1. I have gained both national and international accolades

2. In my current university, I received the highest salary since am paid as research professor not as teaching professor even though I teach.

3. I am also an adjunct professor to two universities in another countries where I fulfill the duties on agreed terms.

4. In terms of combined salary, due to exchange rate currently is in the range of 1.8-2.5 mill Nigerian money monthly.

5. I also get research Funding where I can do my research, attend conferences, earn extra income and pay salaries as well to research assistants etc.

6. For each academic scientific publication I made, I get paid from both the university (1200 usd per Q1 paper) and the government (200-2500usd per paper depends on quality of paper). Meaning per Paper published, I can earn between 1400-3700 usd apart from my salary.

7. I also focus more on lab-to-market, where I directly sell my products or services to the public, industries and resellers. In the past, I have sold my tank designed to recover and purify phenols from Olive mill wastewater for 6700usd per unit.
I have sold custom sensors developed in my lab to commercial farmers. Also, my disposable glucose sensors are under clinical verification after which will be customized for commercialization etc.

8. I have got to learn many things and get increasingly exposed. Research, conference and business made me to have visited 65 countries, ...my target is 120 countries anyway.

9. Fortunately am quite young and some of my Phd students are almost as old as my dad and Mum. They appreciate and respect me. That makes them learn more.

10. I feel happy providing solutions to immediate problems around me.

#NOTE: there are currently financial fundings for innovative FEMALE researchers from Africa to encourage them.

With more research we can solve our problems and provide solutions to the populace, sell our ideas and products and develop the next sustainable creations.

It is the same in almost all field. If you have innovative ideas that provides sustainable solutions, research ideas that solves or enhance significantly already existing solutions..chances are you will get funded, depends on the institution or country you find yourself you can get paid for all publications also. Also, if your focus is lab-to-market then you can sell your products.

I have had practical products for Biomedical applications like disposable glucose and lactose biosensors, we are working on developing low cost disposable pregnancy test sensors and edible green films for packaging.

For neuroscience; I was just in a PhD Jury last Friday for a Phd student that developed Three cholinesterase inhibitors are commonly used to inhibit Alzheimer. This is neuron issues as well. The novelty of her research is that, she synthesized those inhibitors from plant-based materials and her first trial on clinical based indicated her inhibitors can suppress Alzheimer by 87% and they also exhibit same docking morphology like the common commercial inhibitors.

If she wishes to continue to postdoctoral level, there are chances she will be funded from related societies, private or government.

Wow! That is great! I am an undergraduate majoring in medical physiology in a Nigerian university. How do I start preparing for powerful researches like this?
And for the data mining in neuroscience, what spec of PC and learning resources do you recommend? I am a learner. I have no previous experience in programming.

There are no need for specialized and sophisticated PCs to learn or do research on data mining. The same PC you use in watching BB Africa is suitable.

Data Mining is just the process of analyzing text, Discovering Patterns, Visualizing both structured data which conform to a clearly defined schema, and unstructured data which exist in the form of natural language.

"Data mining skills are in high demand due to the growth of big data and the Internet of Things. Companies are looking for data experts who can extract valuable insights to keep them competitive and ahead of the curve."

To learn Data mining, it will be advisable to start having fundamental skills and knowledge of the following:

1. Basic knowledge of data science/mining
2. Python and R for data science
2. Application of data science in Practical projects with real data

There are bunch of free resources online you can start learning and adapt the knowledge to your field. The following can be a good start:

1. edx.org/learn/data-mining
2. coursera.org/specializations/data-mining
3. ngdata.com/data-mining-resources
4. udemy.com/data-mining
5. futurelearn.com/courses/data-mining-with-weka

Best wishes!

Yes yes ...anything chemistry is sweet. I am a chemist myself.

For industrial biochemistry: the emerging and lab-to-market areas including synthesis of various industrial bio-catalysts for food and allied industries, production of powdered enzymes, and production of various engineered micro-organism based products for agriculture, pharmaceutical, environmental and biotech industries.
