buy the exact gear, replace the fluid with 4litres of dextron 3 (Oando or total fluids should suffice). Then change every 2 to 3 years depending on colour. 1 Like 1 Share |

nurey: How about changing based on mileage? |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by nurey(m): 10:50pm On Jun 13, 2018 |
AutoElectNG:mileage says 100000km according to the manufacturer. thats around 100,000/12000km = 8years. will you advice fluid change every 8years? |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by AutoElectNG: 10:56pm On Jun 13, 2018 |
nurey: Depends on usage....some vehicles travel so much...they can cover 20,000 km a year Secondly, when a vehicle is used for towing or extremely high speed runs, the ATF can get really hot, I know people in those scenarios may change the fluid sooner than later Thirdly, with the way those vehicles are overloaded in commercial applications in Nigeria. It may be advisable to change sooner. My point is find out the application then we know if to follow the manual or use a different schedule 1 Like |

dejisvic: Where are you...why did the previous transmission fail |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by dejisvic(m): 11:10pm On Jun 13, 2018 |
Thanks sir, is it necessary to also do the general servicing? |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by nurey(m): 11:13pm On Jun 13, 2018 |
dejisvic: car left for 6 months, do the servicing and also change the filter. Also if water is used instead of coolant, you might want to check the cooling system for cat fish growth, plankton and zooplankton 1 Like 1 Share |

dejisvic: The terms used in automotive repair and maintenance varies from clime to clime. Please define general servicing for me so I know how to respond. At the moment, I cannot make head or tail what you mean. I may hasten to add that as nure.y as pointed out running fans direct can impact on the ATF because it means the fans stay at one speed, and when the fans run without ECU logic driving them, when the ATF temperature goes up and needs to be cooled, the fans will not be able to respond appropriately, causing ATF thermal instability, degradation and oxidation. Hope your vehicle is not tampered with as far as the fans are concerned. I have an idea what it means to be out of a car for 6 months. I can appreciate what it means to save up funds for a while to get back to the road. Please read this carefully: http://www.aa1car.com/library/atf.htm What you don't understand ask for clarification...I wish you the best. |

dejisvic: Your vehicle appears to be modified. I would fix the cause of the overheating, before using the car with the new transmission. I did not say don't install the new transmission...install it but don't run the car without sorting out why it would overheat...I don't want you running down here with the story that ...my new transmission is toast Transmissions don't like heat beyond a certain range. Engines are built to run hot...much hotter than transmissions... |

AutoElectNG: I bought this car 2014 as tokunbo, since then Lagos to ekiti only one time and Benin to ekiti tro and fro 6times after that within town house to office. |

dejisvic: you have been fleeced big time by your so called mechanic. the gear refused to respond due to ATF believe me I have been in ur shoes with a 2001 model year, changing the fluid and guaging would have restored back the gear, the gear in that car is solid. I would advice you first change your kazeem then confirm your cooling system probably by doing a pressure test and also compression test to determine the gasket situation and other internal engine components. I doubt if your gear can be salvged, it has already gone through series of serial one chance practical. restore fan and thermostat to factory specs then replace gear. |

dejisvic: yes it is electrical what u need is a rewire that knows what he is doing might not coming on when u put the keys in the ACC position is an easy fix........for someone who knows where to look |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by AutoElectNG: 8:23am On Jun 22, 2018 |
dejisvic: Electrical faults? Yes. Problem not with transmission. Your mechanic is clueless, try and ask around, you need an electrician (still wondering why the dichotomy in Nigeria between mechanic and electrician) and you should be sorted. Clue: I want to guess that in order to install the transmission, they had to mess up with the starter, and they have failed to put it back as it was before. Question: Wasn't the vehicle starting before? If it was, you got a bad mechanic. |

Please my sienna 1999 model is getting it hard to enter first gear and afterwards, it selects normal. I've been using ATF gear oil since. If I flush it out and start using DEXTRON 3,will the problems solved instead of buying another Transmission box? |
Re: Sienna Gear Box Problem by dfos2k(m): 11:23pm On Aug 18, 2020 |
The little I know about automatic gears is that the first and most important rule is to use the right grade if transmission fluid. You can avoid most other problems. |
