It was supposed to be a paid kind of apprenticeship.

The real question should be, are they filling vacant spaces and doing job that were left on done, are they adding to the value of education or sitting behind desk useless.

I dont know of other states but in Ogun State, most of them have to take up subjects that are far from their speciality because there is massive shortage of teachers.

Most teacher have retired and because the government wants to keep recurrent expenditure low there is an invisible embargo on employment.

Remember, the contract between the federal govt and npower volunteers ends by this November, 5 months time, and over 200,000 youths will be out of pay .

Now to think, 30,000 is enough to make savings from is suicidal, unless those living with relations and feeding from them.

What is your opinion on this?

Should these 200,000 volunteers be ousted after 2years of service?

pls, give this a wider coverage. Thanks.

I have said it time without numbers that the beneficiaries will be the biggest fool and losers if they fail to compel gov't to retain them in the civil service. This npower project is the first time the son of nobody got a job through merit without knowing anyone at the top. If this gov't is sincere about aradicating corruption, then they should do the needful otherwise the opposition will tap into their mistake and corner their voters. They cannot keep the juicy jobs for their kids and they stipends for the children of the poor. Even God in heaven doesn't support injustice. Mr president has started well by initiating this program, he has shown good Faith by restoring what mko abiola lost due to injustice. Let him finish the job by proving to the youth that they are not good for stipends only. Anything short of retention will be to the disadvantage of this regime. Only a fool train a child and allow such child to die in his watch due to carelessness. A word is enough for the wise

you said it all. Am sure this government is not that dumb that they will lay down 200,000 volunteers. It's never done.
Re: 200,000 Youths About To Become Jobless As November Approaches by Gkemz: 9:44am On Jun 15, 2018
There's no way govt can absorb all the volunteers into civil service but the government can get them equipped by paying them off with a reasonable amount of money to enable them start up their hustle thereby encouraging entrepreneurial spirit.

How FG is tackling unemployment – Osinbajo

JOHN ABAYOMI

14 JUN 2018

Alexander Okere, Benin

Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday assured Nigerians that the Federal Government had not relented in its efforts to address the nation’s unemployment problem.

Osinbajo disclosed this during a town hall meeting with youth groups, traders, and other stakeholders in business, agriculture and information and communication technology, as part of his two-day visit to Benin, the Edo State capital.

The Vice-President said that the government was committed to supporting small businesses, through funding and expert advice from its agencies, to micro, small and medium-scale enterprises.

He emphasised that the social investment programme of the Federal Government was important to President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that 200,000 beneficiaries had been recorded while the number would be increased to 300,000 by the end of June.

Osinbajo explained, “The important thing for us, as a government, is to make sure that we deal with the unemployment problem. We will deal with it in two ways.

“One, by direct employment; that is what we are doing through the N-Power programme. We will also deal with it by giving credit to people who want to work, whether it is the market women, the artisans, the N-Build, N-Teach and all that.

“Apart from that, we will also give credit to the very lowest traders, those who are hawking, those who are selling little things all over the country because all of these people are hard-working Nigerians.

“And we want to make sure that every Nigerian who is prepared to work we will give them an opportunity to work.”

On the new housing project in Benin, he said, “I want to commend the governor of the state for the excellent work that he is doing. I think that by the time I come back next (time), we are going to see some major industries here and there and some many changes.”

Earlier, Governor Godwin Obaseki enumerated efforts by his administration to address the menace of human trafficking to include ward development committees to guide the government in the provision of necessary infrastructure in rural areas.

The whole Nigerian workforce is about 900,000. If they absorb Npower volunteers, the civil service would be saturated. But in my opinion, government should absorb them because of the following reasons:

1. There's need for more teachers, health workers and agricultural extension workers especially in the rural areas.

2. Disengaging the volunteers after two years is inhuman after they've render their selfless service to their fatherland for a token which is not even enough to sustain a single man for 3 weeks.

3. Disengaging them will add more pressure to already saturated labour market.

4. I guess only 60% of Npower volunteers are graduate the rest are either NCE or O level certificate holders. So Federal government should absorb the graduate after extensive screening because some are just graduate by name and as such, not all of them deserve to teach the feature generation.

5. The NCE holders should be absorb by State civil service to teach in primary schools because they amount to 20% of the total number of all volunteers.

6. The O level and ND holders should be empowered with start up capital to established themselves and also this should be extended to the NCE holders and Degree holders because not all of them would like to work for government.

If the government make mistake of realising them into labour market, it'd be like one step forward and two step backward and PDP would capitalize on it as a campaign point.

The NPower program is guilty of excluding graduate that are above the age bracket of 18-35.

NIGERIA HAS AN ARMY OF UNEMPLOYED THAT ARE ABOVE 35 YEARS AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE EXCLUDED FROM THE MAINSTREAM WHICH NPOWER IS DOING.

NPOWER should not be used as a basics for employing Nigeria graduates because there is a long list of unemployed graduates that are even 40 years or more.

Federal government should create more jobs beyond the security, paramilitary, fire service, customs, immigration.

We want to see oil companies employed graduates in massive number.

Npower beneficiaries should be employed but at the same time the door should be open to graduate who are 36 years and above to be gainfully employed.

DO NOT CLOSE THE DOOR TO A 40 OR 50 YEARS OLD MAN WHO WANT TO WORK TO KEEP HIMSELF AND FAMILY GOING.

If the govt cannot retain all , they can retain some. Stop making excuses for them....The primary aim of gov't is the security and welfare of the citizens. You don't tag Nigerian youth lazy and criminal without showing us what you 've done to engage them . The only people 30k stipends are helping are those under their parents.

He said it as it is.

It is a revolving door for apprenticeship. A social and skills intervention programme.

Government made it clear from the beginning and the beneficiaries, not being illiterate, knew the set objective.

I remember many on this forum even calling it a fraud and that it never happened. Heck, even Abaribe said Npower had no participants.

Of a sudden, some people want to blackmail government into absorbing 200k into its payroll.

NPower was just a stupid waste of money.

That money could have been used to procure electricity meters for citizens.

Nigeria would be 25% on the way to making the electricity sector look like a proper sector.

Empowered with the 30,000 monthly stipend? For your information some of them are parents, so I ask you what will the monthly stipend do for them within two years that you think they can start something on the our own? This is useless if the government can not absorb the first batch increase their salaries. Other batches will be absorbed subsequently. Please don't tell me there is no money. What has happened to the recovered funds and those still under recovering so far? What of the revenue streams of the government? Customs, FIRS, JAMB, etc agencies of the FG have all boasted huge revenues in the recent times. Now is the time for the FG to put all of these back to the people. So much sincerity has been given to this government of no clear plans and directions.

FG is not tackling this issue from the root cause that's the reason why unemployment will continue to rise if there is no power(a.ka UP NEPA) noting will work, MODERN agriculture is another avenue govt can quickly arrest unemployment among youths by making it attractive but there are no strategic thinker in the ministry of agriculture that's the only two ministries thT can revive unemployment quickly but we play lip service and politics with everything in this country
