A common trait among all comedies from slapstick to satire is they all run under half an hour, ie, 30mins. However, the rules are different for dramas. An average drama has a lot going on, plot and subplots, primary story arch and secondary story arch, etc, and thus cramming the content under 30mins is quite a bit tricky. It would have been more logical for Starz to do it the British way. Don't break it into bits, just make it a solid 3 part 60mins per episode miniseries. It would become a more fulfilling, fluid, less disjointed show if done right.

At the bolded, I don't know what you're on about. MOST TV dramas are 60 mins shows and a lot of them do very well, and I mean, A LOT.

Premium cable dramas from HBO and Showtime and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are purely 60mins without commercials, whilst, network dramas from NBC, ABC, FOX, and CBS are 45mins of drama content and 15mins of commercials. Starz's recent dramas like The Girlfriend Experience, Bitter Sweet and now Vida are deviating from the norm, and thus should be called anomalies. While they are all good shows with no fillers, their uncharacteristic short lengths leave dedicated viewers like myself very unfulfilled. Don't get it twisted.

My SO doesn't like it much, but I find it very funny, yet very dark. Along the lines of Black Mirror and Inside Number 9 in comparison to darkness and humour, as well as very reflective.

Unlikely. The Girlfriend Experience is just planning a season 3, and besides, unlike network channels, premium cable channels don't rely on Nielsen ratings to renew/ cancel shows. I think the most logical explanation is budgetary reasons. 30mins episode cost less than 60mins episode to produce. They are cutting corners, basically... the cheap f**ks.
