'We're not just professional on set-pieces' - Gernot Rohr defends tactics, Mikel in Croatia loss The Super Eagles were punished for their lack of coordination while defending set-pieces, according to the German gaffer Nigeria's only undoing against Croatia was defending set-pieces and not the tactical approach, according to coach Gernot Rohr. The Super Eagles failed to break their World Cup opening game jinx with an own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo and a Luka Modric penalty, both coming off mistakes from corner kicks, condemning them to a 2-0 defeat at the Kaliningrad Stadium. The west African side have now failed to win their first games at the quadrennial tourney since the 1998 edition when they won Spain 3-1. Also, the goals conceded were the third and fourth off corner kick situations in their previous three encounters. Rohr's choice of tactics was questioned by fans and pundit alike . But the German handler has defended the urge not to revert to a back-three, stating they did well in countering Zlatko Dalic's approach and, however, only missed being 'professional' from set-piece situations. "I think the organisation was okay. We didn't concede from normal play, we conceded from set-pieces," Rohr said after the game. "Our system was okay. We cannot play with three when there is only one centre-forward, so we played with four because Croatia had three strikers. What we were missing today was to be more professional on set-pieces. Each game is different, we will see for the next game. We know we can play with three centre-backs but today was not that day. Rohr also jumped to the defence of team captain John Obi Mikel - subbed off in the closing stages of the game after failing to exert his influence, and particularly failing to link effectively with striker Odion Ighalo. "We play all the time with Mikel in this role of offensive midfield. It's was going well, we qualified and the team built behind them. "I know he plays before in defensive midfield, in China he plays offensive and defensive. When we don't have the ball, everyone is defensive. Obi Mikel tried his best, it's not easy when you have to play against Modric and Rakitic when you see the clubs where they play and then the clubs where our players play. On Alex Iwobi, he said: "Iwobi deserved to start the game, he had big work to do defensively against the right-back, he did it well, he had to work a lot, perhaps he was missing the energy for his offensive game. "He did well, it was not his fault we lost the game." Rohr still harbours hope that Nigeria can qualify from Group D, believing his side can muster four points off Iceland and Argentina - who played a 1-1 draw at the Spartak Stadium, earlier on Saturday . "It's important to make at least four points to qualify. All is in our hands. Let's be positive and believe we can do it. "We have the youngest team at the World Cup. Let them learn from this match and do better. We saw Iceland they are a strong team and they can do very well, but we know we can also do better." Nigeria, rooted to the bottom of Group D with no point, face World Cup debutant Iceland on June 22. http://www.goal.com/en/news/were-not-just-professional-on-set-pieces-gernot-rohr-defends/1mc95khwa4tg01an0gabopzqtm |

TheSuperNerd: Even you? No amount of crosses would have made us score as long as it was Ighalo that was in that box. You are playing a one man striker who is not known to be great with his head and you think lack of crosses was why we didnt score? I won't say more than that. The few crosses we connected to were from balogun and only one weak heading from ighalo. What was done with our 5 to 6 corners? 2 Likes |

Odunayaw: A wise coach is flexible and understands that it is different stroke for different folks. He had a plan that worked against the Africans, but tweaking now that the stage is a step higher, to get results, he showed he ain't as astute as earlier thought. Did u see Portugal versus Belgium in the pre tournament friendly? Compare that Portugal side to the one that matched the Espanas, then u will see the different. 2 Likes |

Lol.... People shaa... All it took was just one loss in our first game to get the scoffers out to start claiming they have a good knowledge of the team bla bla bla.... Haahahahahahahaha... Even the pessimists are claiming awesome because they have been critical of Rohr bla bla bla... Omo... I also recall that they have been strongly critical of this team even when we did great. Bashing and always degrading players like Iheanacho and Mikel who are key to this team and key to any chances of us getting a result going forward as a team and now some are already falling for their nonsensical analytical approaches and seeing their words as true and amen... Abegiiiiii... I am not fooled. Right from time, we have known this team can only function and deliver when we play to our strengths but when we choose to tow the path of conservatism tactically we hurt our ourselves. We played to our strengths against Argentina and ever since then we have not repeated such again because Rohr in his stubbornness and annoying conservative stance has refused to again build on that formation and personnel to keep us growing along that line. But because Rohr has been annoying doesn't make any of us here better than him or know any better too. People who criticise Rohr and yet see nothing in Shehu's dull plays yesterday?? People who are satisfied with Ighalo as our top striker??! I say they are even worse than the stubborn Rohr... Their dislike for certain players in the team will also not allow them as coaches, if given the opportunity, to play to our strengths and this is the bloody truth so plsss spare me the bullcrap talk of some people here being critics of Rohr. We are all critics of Rohr... It is just that we all have different degrees to which we criticise the gaffer. We all have at one time or another stated some level of dissatisfaction with Rohr but we move on too because we cannot keep lamenting but must also support the team. I have always questioned why we have never again tested that 3-5-2 with Nacho and Iwobi up top as we did against Argentina. We saw our best in that formation. And it can be built upon with the addition of Victor Moses to join Nacho uptop and moving Iwobi a bit behind to play dynamically and freely in front of a disciplined Mikel (who can dictate from deep and cover with his positional intelligence gained playing DM for over or about 10yrs at Chelsea) and a rugged and tactical Ndidi (who can win balls and feed our more creative midfielders). Criticism is not when we downgrade what we have. It is in stating our weaknesses and how to fix it with the team's best interests in mind even when it means admitting that a player you personally don't rate is actually the right man for the job. It is easy to criticise but harder to admit the truth. The truth is Iheanacho is better than Ighalo and should start ahead of him. Ebuehi too should bench Shehu... We lack adventure down that right with Shehu on the field. Say it as it f**king is and stop coating the truth with rubbish and "I told you so..." If you love the Super Eagles and indeed want us to win. You will look at the list of 23 and come up with a crack team in the best formation that can salvage this situation... And not just barking so called criticism from your high horses of coated pessimism. I am #InThisRideForTheLongRun... I am no "I told you so" analyst or fan. This team has a future. It does not all start and end here in Russia. Criticise with an aim to stating where the team can improve and be honest and truthful with the players that can actually make us better and stop coating it! We know the better results-oriented players in this team... Say it as it is! In finality, look at those stats below.... We matched the Croatians but just could not assert ourselves in attack. We did ourselves in with two errors. Besides those errors, it could have easily been a draw or we could have nicked it if and only if we had more impetus upfront. Rohr's conservatism to stick to a misfiring and movements-poor Ighalo and a dull Shehu cost us. Take it or leave it. It is not about attacking any player... I celebrated Ighalo's birthday on here and charged him to shine didn't I? So it is not about attacking anyone... It is just about truthfully stating where our biggest problems laid. We had other problems but these were the most glaring ones. In all, We know those who genuinely believe in this team and we will not be fooled. So thank you and keep having a great world cup... 12 Likes 1 Share

goldfish80: Classic case of totally missing the point. Against South Africa, Iheanacho made repeated runs to space to take advantage of the wide gaps created by the South Africans. Unfortunately, we did not have the midfielder to take advantage of Iheanacho's runs. With Mikel, we would have torn the South Africans to shreds. In this case, the runs and movement were not made by Ighalo, so Mikel did not have the opportunity to using his passing range to our advantage. Gerrit? 1 Like |

You keep repeating this, which collapse did we collapse? Did we not concede 2 goals when he was on the field of play, how many did we concede after he left? Collapse ko, calipso no. This is what happens when we support the eagles because of some certain players, we get blinded to their fault abd twist facts in their favor. TheGoodJoe: |

We could have tried. Crosses coming in like rain in that manner can always result in one chance or the other for a strike to be made. It must not always be about connecting with the head. The ball could drop off a poor or desperate tame clearance and one hit from the in-running advanced midfielders or forwards like Iwobi, Moses or Mikel or maybe an Ndidi depending on their positioning when we are on the attack in such manner, could head right in. Also, Balogun's came from a corner I think. Ighalo's was weak no doubt and from the flanks (left flank I think). In all, crosses dropped more than four or five times repeatedly in the opponent box could or may result in a chance for a strike off a desperate tame clearance... Or an easy tap in.. somehow: |

As I have always said, Mikel is too soft to be a modern day captain. I was expecting him to do more in organizing his players. More in confronting the refs for his poor calls etc. But baba just de smile. When I sited Ramos as an example of what a captain is to look like you guys came for my head and said going Ramos way will defeat the objective of the game - FAIR PLAY. Look at how they want to technically take out Moses. So much for Fair play. Despite the introduction of VAR the officiating has not yet changed-same biasness. Etebo got so many fouls. Same with Moses Balogun etc and none of them simulated enough to influence the ref. Moses will fall and still be smiling. Who will take you that serious. Look at how Ronaldo led his own team. Plenty simulations with brain. One of the Spanish player Nacho or so wanted to get Ronaldo booked when he exaggerated a ball thrown at him by Ronaldo to throwing. But quickly Ronaldo washed his hand and off any prank the guy has in mind. None of our players told the ref to go check the video. They were taking everything hook and line. We have a long way to go. We cannot be smiling every match and expect victory against European teams when even the ref himself already has a preconceived mind that Africans style is all about physicality. We need real simulations. 1 Like |

ersonleads: Simy Nwankwo will not offer enough movement up front. Either we go with Moses and Nacho which I feel is our most lethal based on running at the defence and causing trouble. Or we go with Iwobi and Nacho which I feel will bring out most combinative play when it comes to combination of passes to unlock stubborn defence. |

ChrisKels:the you don't change a winning team and formation is archaic and does not work again in modern day football. That's why coaches in their late fifties and above are finding it hard to catch up with the change. Mourinho is a testament to this. |

TheGoodJoe:You will always find one excuse to give no matter what. After the South African game, you claimed Mikel was the missing link for kelechi. Now Mikel is here, you switch to Kelechi. The same Kelechi who have proved time and time again his inability to play as a single striker. Infact it was after his stinker against SA that he lost the starting spot in the Super Eagles till date. It’s a disappointing result and performance, and we only had one effort on goal which was a looping header. That's another quote from an ex international, pointing at Mike's failings. Do you know football more than Okocha and Osaze? Did you ever play for Super Eagles? If these guys are pointing finger at Mikel, who are you to suggest they are all wrong and you're right? 4 Likes 3 Shares |

You added notes on corners... Okay now let's try to get this... We wasted our corners because right from I can remember, we have not yet mastered the art of being threatening from set pieces like Cornerkicks. And it is sad. I recall many pages ago crediting Oliseh for improving that aspect of our play. We were deadly from indirect freekicks and corner kicks in his short tumultuous reign. But under Rohr we have only converted once from a corner against Cameroun... A dummy corner it was sef. Also, in a corner kick, the opponent is organized enough to snuff us out and add that to the fact we are not threatening. Now back to crosses... In an attacking move down the flanks with the bold and adventurous fullback pushing into those pockets of spaces to run in behind and pick some crosses , the opponent won't be as organized as it is for a corner. It would be quick attempts by their available men at the back to clear the ball and there is a chance he could miss and we score, he turns it into his net... Or he clears it tamely and we capitalise and hit a rocket in.... ...Or it could be akin to the fullback acting like an overlapping Onazi against Cameroun who found Nacho with a sweet low level headed cross after running in behind after opening up nicely for Victor Moses down same right... (This is what Shehu was meant to offer when we were in quick attack down that right at times... Ebuehi can offer this trait). This is what crosses can do and how dangerous we can actually be from crosses. somehow: |

goldfish80: I have told you people the same thing over and over again but you guys have continued with your false doctrine. Iheanancho was good in the game against South Africa but the midfield failed in taking advantage of his runs. Yet you people want to blame Iheanacho for the midfield not finding him. Now Ighalo offered little movement upfront and now you people want to blame Mikel for our conservative style. Playing Mikel deeper means you guys want Iwobi or Iheanacho in attack midfield to support Ighalo because he is not capable of causing defenders problem. It might work but it kills our three man midfield combos who can contribute defensively and keep us compact in the Middle. To take advantage of this, we need movement upfront. This was our problem, not Mikel. When Iheanacho entered, with Mikel in the side, we were deadlier. It is so easy to see. Look at the window when Iheanacho attacked and tell me we would not have cause the Croatians more problems. 1 Like 1 Share |

Odunayaw:As a pro, you don't have to go on break to receive instruction from your coaches to know what to do in such circumstance like the one we found ourselves yesterday. Moses and Mikel experience is nothing but shame. They couldn't devise another means through out the game to win. It was get the ball to the striker syndrome all through. Since that's what 4-2-3-1 formation is all about. I expect them to have resolved to hitting shots from outside 18 box and hope our strikers make use of the scraps. Since we couldn't break them down from open play. The only threatening shot was the one Iwobi took that rebounded of a players leg. The Croats switched their styles so many times throughout the game. At first it was crossing for mandzukic to make use of. Then they decided to give him a pass and he returned he kept laying it that for them to shoot. They changed their corner kick style not once and so rendered our team confused etc. In short we went into that game with just one plan. Hoof it to Ighalo. The World Cup is a war. You must have multiple back up plans for every battle. The 4-2-3-1 was add for Rohr to tweak since we were chasing the game. That's why I like the 3 at the back formations you can always take out a defender for an attacker when in need of a goal. Not an attacker for an attacker. |
