most biology programs have started the trend. But how do they want to evaluate “us”. They said the GRE puts many people at a disadvantage and its a burden to applicants and performance is based on how much you spend on preparation

Exactly. I see it moving to other disciplines very soon. Research experience(number of publications , research projects, portfolios etc might be the new deciding factor instead of standardized exams.

I got admitted to the same school.
The admission letter talk about merit funding which wasn't clear.
I need more information about this school before I accept the admission
jelmusboy:
Admitted to Morgan State University, PhD in Bio-environmental Science. Funny enough, they've not said anything about funding.
I have emailed the Grad School and Program Coord but none of them is saying anything tangible about funding.

How do I go about this?

There are schools that require just GRE. All the schools I applied to waived TOEFL for me either because I was a Nigerian or because I did my masters in the UK. So, yes you can apply with your GRE only. Schols like Stevens, Oregon state, George Washington university, Michigan Tech etc don't require TOEFL from Nigerians.
Thank you for this information.

I think university of Maryland do not require TOEFL from Nigeria as well.

It all depends on the school 's admission policy. Some schools requires that you apply first without securing a supervisor. Many of them actually do this. Very few will ask you to get a supervisor before applying. If your interests tallies with a faculty members research interest, he will either contact you for further details or outrightly offered you admission. Many won't want to commit to a candidate who has not taken out time and resources to apply.
Nice one @ Quoran. Thank you for this information.

Thanks so much. Please do you have any idea how much they charge as processing fee ? I mean, Oregon, George washington and stevens university.

Oregon State - $85 ; George Washington - Free last year as I attended the webinar; Stevens- $60 though most times, they waive applications fees. You can also check the schools website if there is a new development.

I wonder how candidates will be evaluated now !!!

I personally think the GRE is a waste of time especially for a PhD program.

By the way thanks for the TOEFL registration. Wrote on Saturday.

Very right.. Even for M.Sc. I don't see positive correlation between GRE and High Academic Excellence in graduate school.

If offered admission with scholarship for an MSc program in the US, do you still qualify to apply for graduate assistant positions?
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Quoran: 1:03pm On Jun 18, 2018
Personally, I don't see much correlation between the GRE and succeeding in graduate school. Yes, the GRE could measure certain abilities but it isn't an overall indicator of success. In my two GRE attempts, the difference in both test outcomes was simply practice and my approach to the examinations. I don't think anything extraordinary happened in between.

Nevertheless, I don't think the GRE should be scrapped as it could be a disadvantage to international students. Schools in the USA don't trust our degrees as such and the GRE is just a way of showing them that despite what they think, we can still measure up. Even though most schools claim they look at applications holistically, sometimes they screen applicants based on their minimum requirement which is usually test scores and GPA.

If the GRE is scrapped, it might be difficult to get into some universities especially the top ones. Some professors have certain biases towards applicant's former university or the reputation of his former thesis supervisor.
This is my opinion though.

It depends on the terms of the scholarship. Ordinarily, you won't be offered two funding opportunities at once. You may be asked to jettison one.

I very much agree with you. GRE is a leeway for we Nigerians to easily get US schools.
Come to think of it, it they scrap GRE, they assessment will be skewed against us; professor's bias and not too good research skill.

Multiple funded Research Assistantship positions (for PhD students) are available at the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Lab at the Center for Natural Resources at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (http://nrdp.njit.edu), located 20 minutes from downtown New York City. Students could be enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field. The
researchers in the CNR have been conducting research on fundamental and applied aspects of fluid dynamics, especially in relation to multiphase flow. The research is 70/30 modeling/experimental, and the latter would be conducted using the latest techniques for detection and visualization.

Candidates with Master degree are preferred, and they should have good communication skills, willing-to-learn attitude, and solid knowledge of fluid mechanics and mathematics. The candidates should be able to meet the NJIT graduate school admission requirements: (GPA/GRE/TOEFL, https://www.njit.edu/graduatestudies/index.php)Prior experience in CFD modeling and coding is an asset but not required.

This is a fully funded position to be started as soon as possible (2018 Fall). Please send your resume to wenji619@gmail.com OR newlinzhao@gmail.com.

All resumes will be carefully reviewed but only competitive candidates will be contacted.

I sent a mail to a Prof at Morgan State Uni informing him that I have been accepted to a PhD program in the school and interested in his research.

He sent me the list of projects he is currently working on in his lab and said he will take one or two students to work with him.

I want to reply his email that I am interested in his project. Do I need to ask for funding (RA or GA) in my response cos the graduate school and my department have not said anything concerning funding?

How do I frame the response so that he will have an idea that I need funding?

Help my matter

I think you need to just reply that you're interested in his research 1st. Convince him why you're suitable for his research lab, and He should talk about funding in his response (If Available or not). If he didn't say anything as regards it, then discuss about chances of being accepted for GA or RA in your next response. Best wishes

Don't ask for funding.Don't jump the gun. I'm very certain he knows that working on projects as a PhD student requires financial assistance. Focus on been an ideal match for his research projects. I'm thinking if he doesn't have research grants, he won't do projects at that level.
In your response, simply say you want to be a research assistant for one of his projects (Name it). -Also talk about how your research interests and academic qualifications will make you an asset his research group. Then mention how your experiences in the past will make you excel in his projects.

This my opinion. If you're not convinced about funding, you can still ask. I know how it feels to be uncertain about something as vital as funding.

Good afternoon guys
Please, I need help on this. I want to apply to UTArlington for "PhD straight from BS" or "MS" degree in Civil Engineering as I meet the requirements for both. I would have applied for both but I can only make only one application at a time. I am confused on which has the higher probability of getting me admitted with full funding. Please kindly give your views on the matter. Here are my grades:
GPA-3.7/4.0
GRE- 151(V), 158(Q)

You have a good GPA. Issues like this depend on the institution to be honest. Meeting the minimum require for admission isn't isn't a guarantee that admission will be offered. If you really want to go for a PhD, then you can apply directly. I'm just thinking that your GRE might not be extremely competitive enough for a PhD (especially as funding is involved) but then that's my opinion. GRE scores aren't the only thing that matter. If a potential supervisor wants you, your GRE wont matter. You have a good GPA and that's a plus too. I will check the department's website and let you know what I think. For a masters degree, admission shouldn't be an issue.
