Ifife is breeze in igbo, enyi is elephant, ogede is plantain, ogede oyibo is banana, ewu is goat, gini also kini is what, oji is dark, ojiji also ijiji is darkness, atu is deer.nti is ear as against eti for yoruba, onu also enu or inu is mouth. The truth is that both languages evolved from one proto language. 2 Likes |

Try to read a book titled 'How Igbo and Yoruba became 2 languages'. It was written by one Yoruba professor. You can also go to the culture section, i posted some extracts/examples from the book. 1 Like |

ezeagu: There is a link between igbo and yoruba .they both belong to kwa group and were believed to separate in just a few thousand years ago. |
Re: The Majority Itsekiri,Ilaje, olukumi People Of Delta State, And Yoruba Words by ezeagu(m): 4:00pm On Oct 02, 2010 |
Abagworo: This is a theory, and there hasn't even been any serious investigation into the history of the area around the Niger, there are a few words similar may also mean that they influenced each other, there are similar words with other languages, they don't necessarily have to come from the same source, which I don't believe. |
Re: The Majority Itsekiri,Ilaje, olukumi People Of Delta State, And Yoruba Words by excanny: 6:27pm On Oct 02, 2010 |
ezeagu: What is striking about the possible shared words are that they are very corrupted yet you can still see some of the consonant structures still intact. Take 'ufufe' and 'afefe', or 'onye' and 'eniyan' for instance. If they were mere influenced words, like 'okwute/okwuta' which stands for 'stone' in almost all southern Nigerian languages(iIgbo, Yoruba, urhobo, bini, etc) the corruption is much lesser. |
Re: The Majority Itsekiri,Ilaje, olukumi People Of Delta State, And Yoruba Words by ezeagu(m): 7:10pm On Oct 02, 2010 |
I don't believe Igbo and Yoruba came from a single shared people. That's just thinking within colonial borders, the Yoruba share more in common with people in Benin and other countries to Nigeria's west and the Igbo are more similar to the Southern Cameroons. There's nothing in their archaeology that even looks similar, the Yoruba have some sort of cultural associations with the Nok people, carrying on in their art, Igbo don't. Both lands were settled at different times at locations that are at least 100 miles apart from each other. I believe that interaction has brought similarities in their language (slave trades, banished people, migrations) rather than coming from one entity. Romance languages are for the most from Latin, and many of them can understand each other, Igbo people can hardly understand the different dialects. 1 Like |

The Yorubas didn't have much interaction with the Igbos during the slave trade era. Most of the returnee freed slaves who might have mingled were re-settled in Libreville and Freetown, not in Nigeria with the exception of a few Saros whose influence would have been insignificant. The link between the Yorubas and Igbos had been the binis who served as middlemen in the exchange of cultures. Yet, there exists a number of shared words between Yoruba and Igbo that are non-existent in bini. A possible indication that there must be be some proto-language and distant relationship in the past since their current isolated locations make such impossible. 2 Likes |

excanny: I wasn't talking about the Atlantic slave trade, I was talking about all the slave trades happening before the Atlantic opened up. There have been population groups such as the Olukwumi who have migrated East and West. The Igbo and Yoruba definitely met, and this might be the reason for the Moremi-Igbo story, but even in this story the two groups aren't seen as one. There isn't even a hint of a common origin from both groups, most may just want to see one because they're thinking in terms of modern day Nigeria and its borders. The whole Kwa origin even includes Tiv people, which there's little to no similarity with. With the Igbo and Yoruba, there's little to no similarity in governance, religion, art, customs, and other aspects. |
Re: The Majority Itsekiri,Ilaje, olukumi People Of Delta State, And Yoruba Words by excanny: 11:36pm On Oct 02, 2010 |
ezeagu: So you believe that the decision of Moremi, a Yoruba woman to marry the masqueraded Igbos in order to find out if they were spirits or humans was enough to share similar words when the contact the Igbos had with the Yorubas at this time was mostly in war times. How much time do you have to learn the language of your enemies before killing them in the battlefield? It just doesn't add up. |
Re: The Majority Itsekiri,Ilaje, olukumi People Of Delta State, And Yoruba Words by ezeagu(m): 12:48am On Oct 03, 2010 |
excanny: You're making up what I said, the Moremi bit came after in the paragraph. What I said is that the Igbo and Yoruba have had contact, I never said it was only because of Moremi. How does a common ancestry add up when there's no similarity at all between the two groups apart from a few words? |
