* Warns against discriminating Ebonyians in Anambra

David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

The Governor of Ebonyi State and Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Mr. David Umahi, has condemned the renaming of a street initially named after Abakaliki, by his Anambra State counterpart, Mr. Willie Obiano.

Obiano had recently renamed the popular Abakaliki Street, housing most of the nightclubs in the capital city as ‘Club Road’.

In doing so, Obiano had explained that renaming the street was necessary, so that its name can depict the flurry of night activities which the street has become synonymous with.

But Umahi, in a press release signed on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Emmanuel Uzor, condemned the change in name, saying that it was a way of marginalising Ebonyi, or even making Anambra feel superior to his state.

The release quoted Umahi as being alarmed by the action of Anambra State Government, while calling for the immediate reversal of the action by his Anambra counterpart, Obiano.

“While we condemn in its entirety, the action, if it is true, Umahi has put everything in place to ensure that His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano reverses the action of bringing back the Abakaliki street, a name gazetted a long time ago in the spirit of oneness in Igboland.

“There should be no part of Igboland that should be discriminated against. Ebonyi State has received the highest discrimination even from among her brother states and this is not healthy especially as we fight to unite our people and form a formidable economic and political bloc.

“The governor has put a call through to his brother Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, on how best to resolve the conflict of interest especially as regards the social media claims that the street was taken away from Abakaliki people because they are not qualified to answer such name of a major street in Awka,” the statement said.

Uzor said the Ebonyi State government would not want to rush into conclusion over the change of name, which it gathered was done because Abakaliki was seen as the capital of a backward state. He reminded anyone taking any action against an Abakaliki man based on the former toga and personality that Abakaliki had since inception of the administration of Governor David Umahi, Ebonyi has become the fastest developing capital and the most beautiful state capital in Nigeria with great potential to overtake other states in the nearest future.

Umahi frowned on every opportunity by other states especially Anambra to look down on Abakaliki man and called on Ndigbo to eschew discrimination and see every Igbo man as a brother irrespective of where he or she comes from.

Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Anambra and Enugu states are brothers by blood and so shall it remain forever. Minor disagreements must happen but we always settle and live in peace and harmony always. None of these states hate each other and we intermarry as one people.

All attempts by outsiders to divide us must always fail.

Rivalry, agreement and disagreement are inevitable because those things are characteristics of human being. Once you remove the aforementioned, then humanity seize to exist.

Even here in Yoruba land, the discrimination is more stronger that we thought. Ife and Modakeke no dey take eyes see each other, Ife don't marry Modakeke and vice versa.
What of Ogun, some of my people are afraid to marry Ogun man due to juju . As for Ijebu, we see them as lesser Yorubas and have no regards for them.
I don't want to discuss about Yoruba Christians vs Yoruba Muslims because even kids can read the handwriting on the wall concerning such matter ..

Summary: Every tribe has internal crisis, but always quick to come together and fight their common enemies.

Lol this is funny and sad at same time. Every little action is an opportunity to pull out the victim card and cry marginalization. A simple name change of road turns into secret discrimination plot. Anyway if people are being discriminated that isn't cool. That issue should be tackled in court and policies should be put in place in the SE governors meeting.

If they want to comprises it can be unofficially known as Abakaliki street. Just like there are unofficial MLK Boulevard's. I know there's one in Arlington Texas.

Umahi you cant dictate to us how and what to name our street and nobody is looking down on you ,so, stop, feeling inferior. Ebonyi people has not contributed anytbing except littering the whe space. Go to Umuoji and see how these people are trashing our home town.

An advice for Umahi, if you say you are the fastest developing state then pull your people out of Anambra and they can go back and enjoy the divided of your governance. Do not soil the name of Anambra...Anambra has singlehandedly carried Ndi Igbo on our shoulders. Biko, keep quiet.

The renaming won't change anything. People will still refer to it as Abakiliki street till forever.
After all, the renaming of Ezi Elias in Enugu-Ukwu Anambra state to 'Ezi Okpala NRI' didn't change anything. People still refer to it as 'Ezi Elias' till today after many years of its renaming.

Abakiliki is the most popular street in Awka due to its boisterous night life and swarming of runz girls. It is the red light district of Awka. It won't change the popular name.

There is nothing wrong in renaming a place, road or street to depict it's activities. It has nothing to do with looking down on you people.

We don hear your dry jokes.

Alaafin vs Ooni, yorunba Christian vs yoruba Muslim, never finish fight for supremacy for una region yet you dey point your amala-stained fingers towards East.

Both Obiano and Umahi are anti-Biafran abooki arsze-lickers like you and should be seen as mad people.

While serious minded governors are driving people and developmental oriented policies and projects, this one is complaining about renaming of a street in another state, for crying out loud.
Can somebody kindly assist to explain to this governor that he should focus his state's meager resources on projects that are capable of attracting investors and tourists to Abakaliki instead of this thing that a local government should be ashamed of.

The typical abakaliki BS from Umahi. All the hotels and nightclubs on that road are owned by Anambra indigenes. All of them! Ebonyi people don't contribute anything to Anambra state except poverty, agboro and armed robbery. The abakaliki people are the ones hating on Anambra and this they have shown clearly by frustrating Ibeto Cement from re-activating the Nkalagu cement plant because Ibeto is from Anambra.

I think Umahi is overreacting. Anyone familiar with the street in question, knows that " Club road" is a better name to "Abakiliki street". It's got nothing to do with any discrimination. If I were Obiano, I would name another street Abakiliki to cool tempers

If Umahi can show us one street where his abakaliki people have made an impact economically, we may consider doing so. But check the length and breadth of anambra state, you won't find one! Their handwork is crime and agboro.

Good point

Playing the victim card seems popular

A state government actually took out time from other state affairs to write such a "detailed" press release.

Kind of speaks volumes of their work schedule...

Abia state did the similar thing too by sacking all anambra teachers in their civil service. I don't know why successive Anambra governments have not yet reciprocated.
