Now that there is an anti GRE movement in graduate programs in the US #GRExit, I guess y'all should be confident enough to tell the VO that your program didn't require the GRE. Many programs are dropping it as a requirement, about top 50 Biology/Biomed graduate programs have dropped it, Stanford, Cornell, JHU et al 2018. |

jandedfelloh: Your passport and i20 will be sent to the dhl address you chose. You don't have to panic. If its successful, you will receive your passport stamped. If not, you will still receive your passport. Give it 2 to 3 working days. 1 Like |

Good day house! I need your advice. I was offered PhD admissions in Chemical Engineering with no funding at University of Kansas. I have the fee for at least a year, I was told my case will be re-evaluated after a semestre with them. Will it be easy for me to get a Visa with no funding because most VO are used to seeing PhD admissions with funding. |

NefT:My question to you is.. because of the norms, you wont apply for Visa? Go with what you have and hope for the best. However, If I were you I won't take the offer because Phd is stressful enough to now add the constant thought of finances. What is your profile like? 2 Likes |

NefT:Please, do not take that offer. I was almost in that shoe last Fall not until I made the school realize I wouldn't be accepting the admission offer. PhD program, it's like a paid job in the US, please wait for another semester and get a good admission with another school. 2 Likes |

tactmayor:First, do you have any research experiences? you have a great GPA and a not too good Gre score. However, admission and funding are not solely based on one aspect of your application. No one can really say for a fact that you will get funding because funding depends on availability and only the faculties can really know. Because there was funding last year does not mean there will be again the next year. Some years ago I was considering UTA for masters too in Civil Engineering (Structures) and I found out that they don't fund students in there first semester, has that changed? I don't really know. I think not all there PhD students are also fully funded however, my advice to you is to send emails to the graduate coordinator and ask all these program specific questions. He/She is the only one that can give you an exact answer. Additionally, I think UTA Civil engineering has a pre- application for prospective PhD students, whereby you can do a quick application without paying a fee and they tell you if you stand a chance of getting admitted. Side note:If you can re-write the GRE to get >315, please do so that you can have more options for direct PhD because your GPA is awesome. Had it been you have substantial research experience, your GRE wont really matter that much for a PhD application with this GPA (I am assuming you have very little to no research experience). You should consider top schools like Northwestern University (They allow direct PhD and if you don't get admitted, they admit you for masters), Virginia Tech (They don't allow direct PhD but I believe you should get admitted for Masters, however probability of funding for masters is low). University of Pittsburgh is also a good place to check, there is a Nigerian in the Structures PhD program and another (Direct Phd, Gre: 313, GPA:4.48) is incoming this fall, if you want to talk to them there might be possibility of me giving you their contacts (I don't do dms anymore because I cant remember my nairaland login details,). What specialization in Civil Engineering are you looking at? There seem to be low funding opportunities in Structures but Environmental, Transportation and Geotechnical seem to do better in terms of funding. Which other schools are you considering? Make sure you apply to at least 6 schools, send emails to prospective Advisors to market yourself, apply before November ending, write a great SOP (I can give you samples) and get great LORs (LOR is more than 'he is a good student or he is hardworking'') 7 Likes |

Hi Nairaland, a silent reader here, visa finally issued on Tuesday evening after waiting and it wasn’t even AP all because of a silly mistake but God took control. Security guard was asking why i wasn’t smiling when i came out , lol (he no know say different kind of white paper dey) Interview on June 6 for 6:45am,interviewed by Peter @window 5, didn’t even know he drilled me because i was prepared. Vo: Good morning, How are you today Me: am fine thank you (passes documents) Vo: Why are you going to the us? Me: I am going to the us for my bachelors degree at Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston Idaho. Vo:course? Me:Biology(nervousness didn’t make me say that at first) Vo: why biology? Me: (smiling)I choose biology because it is the course i have been really interested in ever since i took it in high school most especially the fact that biology deals with the study of life of all living things and by taking it i will be able to understand the interaction between living things and organisms with the environment. Also biology does not limit or restrict me because i can diversify into other fields like bioengineering ,health sector or even apply it to industries Vonodding) ok so what field interests you or where do you think you might diversify to Mesmiling) maybe nursing or something in the health sector or i can actually go into bioengineering. I have found bioengineering quite fascinating too so am considering that too Vo: ok, how many schools did you apply to? Me:3 Vo: Schools? Me:U of I and UTA Vo: what do they have in common Me: (caught off guard) but then quickly recovered and said I didn’t actually finish my application to UTA because i already got admitted to where I wanted and it’s close to my sister. Vo: (still nodding) your sister’s in the us? Me: yes a graduate student at U of I with teaching assistantship, full tuition waiver and scholarship. Vobrings out her profile) ohh she’s doing her phd? Me: yes Vo: Who’s sponsoring her? Me: my Mum Vo: So why is she not sponsoring you? Me: My uncle already promised to sponsor me if i passed my exams and got admission to the schools I applied to also he’s a consultant at Bleep company while my mum will be taking care of other expenses. Vo: DID YOU WRITE ANY TEST? Me: yes TOEFL , SAT was waived and i wrote a personal essay Vo:When did you finish from high school Me: 2016 Vo:what have you been doing since then? Me: after high school i went for a 1 year intensive fashion training in a fashion school and after that i took the jamb exam and got admitted to oau Vo:ohh, so you’re in school Me: No i got admitted but didn’t resume (Another VO talks to him for some minutes ) Vo: Can i see his bank statement Me: yes (hands it over) Volooking at it) where does he stay? Me:Maryland Vo: This bank statement does not cover all though you have partial scholarship Merealized I didn’t bring a complete bank statement) ohh my sister will be taking care of my living expenses Volooks at 1-20 very well) ohh, do you have her bank statement Me:Not here with me currently Vo: ok, (hands over white paper) i need you to get your sisters bank statement and dhl it to us. Me:ok, thank you Thanks to my sis and bro folatush and teejaf for helping me prepare and I hope this will help future undergraduate applicants. 16 Likes 3 Shares |

tactmayor: Rewrite the GRE. Your GPA is solid, don't dull it Apply to UT Arlington PhD as a moderate option (though I don't know it's ranking in your field), then apply to more ambitious schools Ceteris paribus, a GRE score of 315+ and your GPA will definitely land you a PhD offer at UT Arlington and you may never can tell, a better school can still admit you with full funding for PhD. Don't spend all your funds and shots at safe schools... Have a perfect mix of ambitious, moderate and safe schools... UT Arlington should be a moderate choice for you. But first of all, rewrite your GRE and improve your score so you can get better shots! Goodluck!!! |

oluezekiel: I applied to LSU, UTK, UNH, UAH, U of Arkansas Fayetville. Only UAH,UTK offered me Msc with no funding instead of PhD and Univ Kansas offered me admissions but with no funding. I carefully chose these schools according to my profile and how am I sure I will get into any if I should go for another schools next Fall. I am thinking things could change after a semestre according to the condition of the offer. I guess they want to be sure I am a good fit after a semestre with them. Waiting for another Fall is like eternity because I have been on this for the past two years now. 1 Like 1 Share |
