Southern, Midde-belt Leaders Kick Against Fg’s Decision To Spend N179bn On Ranch by 12Ebisco: 8:28am On Jun 21, 2018
The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, Wednesday, rejected the Federal Government’s decision to spend N179bn to build ranches, describing it as a vexatious declaration.

In a statement jointly signed by Messrs. Yinka Odumakin (South West), Senator Bassey Henshaw (South South), Prof Chigozie Ogbu (South East) and Dr Isuwa Dogo (Middle Belt), the forum, however, commended the decision of the government to embrace ranching for cattle rearers against the erstwhile insistence on archaic open grazing and old century cattle routes, but kicked against using the public fund to set them up.

The statement reads: “The decision to ignore this sensible recommendation has led to a situation where untold terror has been unleashed on farming communities with needless loss of hundreds of lives in the last 3 years with not a soul under prosecution and top functionaries of the administration making excuses for the killers.

“We, however, object to the Federal Government’s decision to spend N179bn of public funds to build these ranches over 10 years starting with N70bn under this administration.

“Cattle-rearing is a private business in which individuals make billions of Naira with no record of what they pay as taxes.

“And it is unfortunate that the Federal Government was making this vexatious declaration while receiving the Chief Executive Officer of Friesland Campina of Netherlands without bothering to find out that it was put together by Cooperatives with roots going back to 1879 and is one of the World’s top five dairy companies with annual revenue of 11 billion.

“It is only reasonable that those who want to engage in the business should approach the states where they want to build ranches and acquire land to build such with firm commitment to abide by the rules of host communities.

“Rewarding the herders with public funds to build ranches would only mean that they have killed enough to beat the country into pacification mode. And this can only encourage other people to arm themselves, cause sufficient killings to get an undue concession.

“What would our society become if fishermen, farmers, and people in other trades begin to cause bloodbath so the Federal Government could give them special consideration?

“We call on the Federal Government to shelve the idea of committing public funds on ranches and allow the owners of the business to attend to their business needs.

“To go ahead with the plan is to say that cattle owners own this Government and that would make other segments of society to say “we have no inheritance in this arrangement.”

so terrorists should be placated to stop killlings? If that is the acse we should all embrace violence since you people are proving that is the only language the government understands. How come the FG is not providing poultry farms for poultry owners or piggeries for pig farmers. What about traders.Farmers too were involved in the conflict and bore 99% of the casualaties what did the FG do for them?

Mark my words this stupid and ethnocentric idea will never work. At least I am sure of that in igboland and earlier Gov Ortom spoke and rejected the resolution saying no free land exists in benue for ranching.

Injustice will never work anyway and we will resist every plot by this Fulani regime to appropriate other peoples ancestral lands uder whatever guise

Yes! This subtle but utterly dangerous plan by the FG to still skew this country more firmly into the hands of the hausa-fulani stock should be firmly rejected.
Cattle rearing is private enterprise/business so government should have no hand in it except it's taking it as it own business. undecided
What rubbish! angry So what becomes of bird/pig/fish/ sheep/Goat farmers etc. Does the APC government really understand the wide-spread implication of this move? Clueless & useless governments. angry angry

The Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom has denied the report that he had agreed to cede a portion of land to the Nigerian government for ranching.

Ortom said he did not at any point during his speech at the media and communications briefing on the National Livestock Transformation Plan which took place in Abuja yesterday state that he would cede any land to the federal government.

Terver Akase, Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary in statement on Wednesday said there was nowhere in the speech that Governor Ortom said Benue would give land for grazing reserves, the proposed FG ranches, cattle colonies or any of the related patterns of animal husbandry contrary to the provisions of the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.

He maintained that the state had no landmass for cattle routes and open grazing as the available land mass is used for crop cultivation to maintain the food basket status.

He reiterated that laws were made out of desperation to stop the killings, adding that the killings started since 2011.

Commenting on the ECOWAS treaty, the Governor said, “The ECOWAS protocol has not been observed by any of the ECOWAS countries and basic documents and checks are not done on the herdsmen.

The land is no longer there. What existed in the 60s when cattle rearers come around with sticks not guns was that we related very well. There was no problem; there was no fighting.

Tomorrow now this government will blame the opposition when they themselves are the opposition within their government undecided

With this now he will say he has created millions of job as if they give us the beef free of charge undecided

Kudos to you guys. A well constructed statement supported by ALL well meaning Nigerians!

That was how they started. Building National Assembly like mosque, inscription of Arabic language on our money, introduction of quota system e.t.c and they were greeted with silence. Has Nigeria fared better with all these NOW WE ARE WISER!

Nigeria belongs to us all! Either that or we go our separate ways!

BUHARI is acting as if he is LORD
Somebody should remind him the meaning of the word democracy which is a system of government that allows the people the right to dictate how they should be governed.
We collectively kicked against the use of our resources for a private enterprise like cattle rearing. BUHARI cannot go against our collective wish because he is a direct beneficiary in this matter, THAT'S THE HIGHEST FORM OF CORRUPTION, and what BUHARI is about to do is not far from what the former SGF did in his grass cutting scandal by awarding the contract to a company he has interest in.

Some states have approved it.

There are many states that are against ranching now but they have known and unknown cattle herdsmen in their midst for decades.

You find the usual pay-per-post PDP urchins are the first to kick against any solution.

The Ranches have been welcomed by volunteers states.

Any south eastern Governor who dares to allocate lands for muderers will surely regret iyt. This is even beyond the Governors. No autonoimous community will allow any stupid Governor site this jihadist ranches in their domain.Trust me this move will fail like the proposed grazing reserves or colony before it.

Already Gov Ortom has already disowned the communique and I trust more Governors will do same in the coming days

Cattle ranching is here to stay and you can do nothing more than rant on the Internet. If the government can build shops in northern Nigeria and rent them out to ibo traders, then they can do the same for fulani herdsmen. It's evil people like you who would prefer the killings go on so as to paint the government in a bad light. If you have 16 heads go and stand in the way of those ranches
