Iceland Coach: Super Eagles Massively Good Team; Have Players In EPL, La Liga, Serie A

Published: June 21, 2018

Iceland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson believes their World Cup match with Nigeria will be tough, and has highlighted the fact that their African opponents have several players plying their trades in the big five leagues in Europe.

Gernot Rohr can count on Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, Oghenekaro Etebo, Simeon Nwankwo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and goalkeeper Francis Uzoho for tomorrow's game in Volgograd.

''Their strengths? They are a physically strong team, they are quick, good athletes all of them, a big running capability. They play direct, they are a really good counter-attacking side,'' Hallgrímsson said at Thursday's press conference.

''I have to give credit to Rohr about their organization. If you have watched their games throughout last year, you can see their improvement in tactical awareness, so in my opinion they have so many things to make a football team proud.

''When you look at the individuals, they have six players in the English Premier League, they have players in La Liga, they have players in Serie A, so they have players playing of the highest quality day in, day out. This is a massively good team with a lot of individual strengths.''

The second match day of Group D starts this evening, with two-time world champions Argentina taking on Croatia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Rohr : Mikel & Moses Are The Star Players In Super Eagles, Others Stars Of The Future

Rohr : Mikel & Moses Are The Star Players In Super Eagles, Others Stars Of The Future
Manager Gernot Rohr has explained why there are only a few star players in the Nigeria squad despite the fact that the population of the country is 500 times the population of Iceland.

The German has named former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel and the current Nigerian Player of the Year Victor Moses as the two players that can be classed as stars in the Super Eagles team, and has predicted that the likes of Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Tyronne Ebuehi will be stars of the future.

''Why we don't have star players? It's because we are the youngest team of the World Cup,'' Rohr said at Thursday afternoon's pre-match conference before the start of training.

''We have Obi Mikel, who is a very good player, you can tell that he is a star, we have Victor Moses who is well known everywhere but we have so many young players, they will be stars, I hope so, tomorrow.

''What we have is a team for 2022, because when you are so young, with the goalkeeper and all the other people, they will be better and better. ''

Rohr has reiterated that the Super Eagles are the underdogs in Group D, pointing out that their three rivals Argentina, Croatia and Iceland are ranked higher than his team in the FIFA ranking.

''We are in the top 50 in the world, Iceland is in the top 20 (22), Croatia is in the top 12 (20) and Argentina in the top eight.

''When I see that the matches are so difficult and the scores are so close, we have to learn also, it is not finished after this World Cup for us.

''We want to improve, we want to learn. When you are the youngest, it is not possible, perhaps, to be the best already,'' he added.

Rohr, who penned a two-year contract extension earlier this year, refused to comment on his future with the Nigeria National Team in the event that they lose to Iceland on Friday.

People complained here when Iheanacho was used to top against S.A and Algeria if you remember that was why he was benched for Ighalo against Cameroon. No doubt Iheanacho is good as SS but as a top 9 for us against Iceland he will not be noticed on the field. Believe me. I love Nacho but he cannot top for us simple! I will prefer Simmy.

But Ighalo goal return is not encouraging. We struggle to score with him on the pitch. Iheanacho can score and pass.

Last season we also had Odey and Alhassan. This is really the first season in a long time that a forward has stood alone, 19 goals in 22 matches speaks for itself. His performance with the main eagles as speaks for itself.

I also thought about dropping Ndidi but I don't know if it is wise.

I like Ighalo and Simy upfront. Etebo and Victor Moses on the flanks is good. But Mikel and Onazi in the midfield?

What I am seeing is long balls if both plays. That is what Ndidi and Etebo can't offer.

Well, let us see how Simy will use his height to knock down balls for Ighalo like Niang did.

I rate Simy better than Niang wey people dey take make noise dey disturb for here.
Does Rohr realize that 4-4-2 only consists of two midfielders? hmmm

My question to him was, why do we even bother playing the game if FIFA ranking tells you the best team? We might as well just award the trophy to the highest FIFA ranked team in the world.

This man makes more excuses than a toodler, I tell ya!

Can somebody ask him to name the star players in the Icelandic team?
Can somebody ask him to tell us the FIFA ranking of Senegal vis-à-vis Poland? And while at it, he should tell is what the FIFA ranking of Mexico is compared to Germany!

This man is beginning to annoy me for real. Does he think that we're fools? He has a team for 2022, then why did he bother coming to the 2018 World cup since he's not ready? Why waste money and slot competing in a tournament you're not ready to play in

Until now, I have always advocated retaining him to maintain consistency but right now I don't know any more shocked

'It was perhaps not the tactics' - Rohr hints at sticking with Croatia setup vs. 'experienced' Iceland

Tolu Olasoji

The Super Eagles are in desperate need for a win over the Europeans to boost their chances of making it to the second round of the Mundial

Nigeria's setup against Croatia was 'perhaps' not the problem, says Gernot Rohr who hinted at sticking with the same tactics in Friday's important Group D clash with Iceland.

On the back of their 2-0 loss to Zlatko Dalic's side in their opening match, Rohr came under criticism for his insistence to see out the entire match without notable tweaks witnessed in pre-World Cup friendlies, notably in England and Argentina ties.

But the German tactician, not sold on revealing his plans for their next clash in Volgograd, insists his side's only failing in Saturday's game was conceding 'stupid goals'.
Rohr has, however, assured that his 'young' Super Eagles will be equipped with the 'tactic to win' Heimir Hallgrimsson’s 'experienced' side.

"The tactics is something I don’t talk about with journalist, just the players. We will have the tactic to win the match, which one [tactic] I can't tell you before," Rohr said during the pre-match conference.

"The last game we had a good organisation but we lost. It was perhaps not the tactics, we conceded two goals, stupid goals, an own goal and a penalty, so we must be ready with good organisation against a different team, they're different to Croatia. We must adapt.
"I've a lot of respect for Iceland, they did so well in a great match against Argentina, we know it'll be very difficult to beat them.

"They have great players playing like a team. Like them we don’t have the big stars, so we'll be like two collectives. They have experience with an average of 28, 29 years and we have an average of about 24, so the young vs. the experienced team, it will be interesting."
Also, Rohr came under waves of criticism for deploying captain John Obi Mikel in an attacking midfield position, with the player's former boss while at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho also hitting out at the move while performing his punditry duties for Russian TV.

But the Super Eagles handler has defended his decision, saying: "No, it's normal - people ask these questions.
"We had a very well known colleague saying that also, saying he's a bad number 10 and we lost a good number 6, but in two years we played like that, Mikel as a matchmaker and we qualified with no defeats, the first African team for the WC and no one asked this question.
"When you lose this can be asked and I understand, but if we play with him as number 6 and lose, we again get asked why we didn’t play like in last matches.

"We have prepared well and tomorrow I think you'll see a Nigeria team who will like to show good football and only the football, the most important thing is the animation of the team, what they do. Organisation is one, and what the players do is another point," he concluded.

Having started the 2018 Fifa World Cup on the back foot, Nigeria - rooted to the bottom of Group D - will hope Thursday's game involving Argentina and Croatia go in their favour, before they set out to trade tackles with Iceland on Friday

Its called mind games. He's creating a future projection that promises things to get better in the future (Trying to strategize his job security)

If he raises our expectation by promising heaven and earth and ends up getting knocked out in the competition, he'll be sacked for not meeting that expectation.

Rohr has been pretty smart with his choice of words, always making it clear how our opponents have better players or have a better Fifa ranking. So that when we lose we go like "After all they are better than us, no shame"

Having watched Nigeria effectively contain Argentina in the 4:2 win a team with a good coach is using the strategy that work 352. If it were our coach he'll first look to see how many strikers Argentina will field so he can field as many defenders in order to minimize loss.

I know it sounds crazy but Nigeria might end up topping this group with Argentina behind: If Argentina beat Croatia today=4 pts for them and lose to us,they remain on 4 pts. When we beat Iceland and Argentina,we take 6pts. If Croatia lose to Argentina and draw Iceland, they take 4 pts. Then goal difference comes in to settle second between Arg and Cro. Whewww,we still got a chance, quite slim but we're good grin grin
