Because in the olden days, rice was a very special and scarce commodity, eaten in a big man's house during an occassion. As time went by, it started being grown locally, but still in subsistent quantities. So average families could afford to eat it once a week. And as Christianity started penetrating into communities, Sunday gatherings became common, and was seen as a very spacial day. Hence the average families cooked rice mostly on Sundays. Now it's become a tradition. *oral history by my dad. 6 Likes |

Katier00: It was originally as a result of poverty. In the past, rice was expensive that families couldn't afford kt as staple diet so it was eaten mostly on special occasions and Sundays. 1 Like |

Katier00: Saying that 90% of households in Nigeria cook rice on Sunday is erroneous. Who did the research, you? Have you forgotten that some are Muslims, Christians and other religion. Even in Christian homes, not everyone cooks rice on Sunday. If you say 30-60% cook rice on Sunday, it will be pardoned (a range not a definite figure) |

Katier00:poverty ravaged Africa and as at then rice was luxurious so people planned to cook only on sundays since they rest and visit friends on that day..Before u knew it..It became a norm on defendable and almost ludicrous to explain. 1 Like 1 Share |

Just finished cooking my Sunday rice. All my life,i have never missed Sunday rice, never. My parents made sure we cook rice every Sunday even when my father is not a fan of rice. Now that I'm married, I continued with it and I'm going to pass it on to my children. Sunday rice is a sacred tradition 1 Like |
