Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday condemned excessive and estimated billing by electricity distribution companies in the country, alleging that the Discos were being operated by fraudsters and persons with the mindset to rip off Nigerians.

They also accused the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the regulator of the power sector, of colluding with the Discos or being helpless while Nigerians were being ripped off.

The lawmakers spoke during a public hearing held at the National Assembly on the “need to curb excessive electricity charges being levied on the consumers by Discos.”

The session was chaired by an All Progressives Congress member from Osun State, Mr Ajibola Famurewa.

The House is currently considering a bill to criminalise estimated billing by the Discos.

Officials of the power firms risk a jail term of six months by the time the law comes into effect for failing to provide prepaid meters to their customers.

At Wednesday’s public hearing, angry lawmakers noted that the Discos seemed to be enjoying estimated and excessive billing to the detriment of Nigerians, as doing so was serving their business interest.

One of the members, who is from Zamfara State, Muazu Lawal, said, “It appears that the Discos and other stakeholders are not ready for the job before them. You just go about billing people the way you like without considering the actual power they consume. This happens everywhere in the country and even here in Abuja.

“From what is happening, I think the Discos are either operated by fraudsters or they are just extorting money from Nigerians. If you are not ready for the job, tell us you are not ready. Go to the government and say you are not ready.”

Another member from Kwara State, Mr Oluyonu Tope, told the session that NERC was not doing its job as a regulator.

He noted, “If Nigerians are to cast their votes on the performance of NERC, it will be that the agency is a complete failure.

“The failure of Nigeria’s economy today is lack of power. NERC is one of the major stakeholders leading Nigeria to failure. NERC, you are a failure.”

Three other lawmakers, Mr Nnanna Igbokwe, Mr Solomon Maren and Mrs Joan Mrakpor, spoke in the same manner.

However, NERC tried to put up defence for itself and the Discos, stating that it had never abdicated its regulatory duties.

The Chairman, NERC, Prof James Momoh, gave some instances when the Discos were fined N134.1m for violation of electricity regulations.

“All the reports related to the fines are published annually. NERC is taking measures to improve on the services by the Discos.”

But, he failed to convince the committee members.

The problem of this country is outright refusal to implement laws n policies to ensure compliance. Every appointee of govt and d govt itself is for sale. At the sight or possible opportunity to acquire dirty wealth, they undermine every system in place either through nepotism, rent-seeking, incompetence or just outright myopia and wickedness.

After all this grandstanding will they pass the law? After that will it be implemented? Shïthole cesspit called Nigeria.

This is what I wonna see on FP. They are stealing from us through estimation of bill.

There is this my friend that live in a self con, his billing exceeded the previous amount last month. He was billed 20,000 naira, can you imagine shocked.

The governments should look into the power sector and fish out those evil monsters there.

It exasperates me seeing that people are being cheated and rob off their hard earned money. I was resented and told my friend to write a letter and forward it to EKED.
This act is very abysmal and needs to be looked into.

More so, Buhari should use this opportunity to fight those corrupt managers in the power sector if at all he wonna win the peoples heart.#strategy for setting another record or if at all first president to file a case against the power sector.

A thread on why PREPAID METER being distributed TO ALL may never be achieved in Nigeria.
After the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Electricity distribution companies are next on the list when it comes to corruption. This has been in existence from time immemorial, just like barracks, many government have come and gone but the deep rooted corruption in the system remains

In April 2016, I moved in to my current apartment. The apartment was still connected to an old meter and there was an outstanding payment of about N385,000.00 to be paid. This wasn't revealed to me before I made payment for the rent, as usual (that's how they all do). This became a worry and an absolute headache. I asked the landlord why it was so and she made me understand that the apartment was not in use for 5years.I asked how come it wasn't reported to NEPA so they'd stop the billing, she gave me a copy of the letter she wrote to them. So I took the matter up, wrote several mails to Eko electricity company and the matter was on for 11months, note that in the space of this 11 months, I never got a monthly bill lesser than 24,000.00. You want to ask if I have a factory in my apartment? No I don't. So it extended from wanting the company to zerorize the ridiculous outstanding balance in the billing account to fighting and contesting the outrageous billing system which do not in any way represent my true electricity consumption and wanting a Prepaid Meter

The battle began.
After several exchange of mails betweens myself and Eko Electric and no solution was forthcoming, I moved the matter to NERC, the regulatory body for all electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. I filed a petition against Ekedp and the undertaking in charge of my area.

Lo and behold, after three days from the petition submission to NERC, I got a call from the marketing manager for my area pleading for me to make myself available to allow them come to my house and take inventory of the electrical appliances I use.

NERC is working yeah? Right. A staff of the Ekedp came to take the inventory and at the end of the computations, we calculated and multiplied each appliance by the estimated units they consume per day and multiplied by 31days.

Recall I said I never got a bill less than 24k in a month? Then we arrived at a figure that even the Eko electric staff who came to take the inventory opened his mouth and couldn't close it. What I should be billed based on having 24hour light per day(which is not even possible) in 31 days was 4,800.00. I almost ran mad. I took a copy of the report, scanned it and attached it to my next petition to NERC.
At this point, the marketing manager attached to my undertaking had started calling and begging me to stop the petitions. That they could all get sacked if matters gets escalated further. Then in September 2017, after all the troubles and how I never got tired if pursuing the issue, I got a mail from Eko electricity to come with some required documents in order to fill a form for a PREPAID METER.

I went there and did as they requested.
At Last, on 27 November 2017, I was on leave.
I was at my gate then this Alfa looking guy was parading and trying to see house number on the fence. My instinct told me to ask if he was asking for Ayo, then he said yes. He was the prepaid meter installer, he was with my new prepaid meter. I also recall that before the whole issue started, I was discouraged severally that I can never be given prepaid meter due to the outstanding balance on the billing account, I paid no mind to all the people that said that and went ahead with my case.
I got the Prepaid meter for FREE. After a week, bill was brought and boom, outstanding balance has been cleared from 385,000.00 to zero balance.
How did I achieve this? I mean I didn't pay a dime to anyone and I never for once bribed my way in all my dealings.I achieved this simply because;

1. I knew my right.
2. I wouldn't settle for mediocrity
3. I never stopped pushing even after several months and it seemed unachievable
4. I was ready to take the matter up anywhere
5. I was informed.

Now imagine how many people are out there who don't even know how to go about such tedious and draining process. I learnt that a lot of people even paid as much as 40k to get the prepaid meter. Something that's supposed to be free. Since the prepaid meter was installed in November 27 2017, I have not exhausted the 303 units that came with it which is calculated to be 7,200.00

And I still have 140units left to use. That's over four (4) months now
Do you now see why these people will never allow dream of every homes having a prepaid meter become a reality?
Because such development will block all holes where the electricity distribution corrupt members of staff perpetrate their fraudulent activities and corruption from.

They know that they will be forced to give light more in order to generate revenue and will not be able to charge people outrageously as they are currently doing and remitting the proceeds of their criminal act to their pockets.

Stand up and Fight for what is your right. Prepaid meter is your right, fight for it to the latter. If you believe that your monthly electricity bill do not represent your consumption, make a case.If you're in Lagos, Ikeja Electricity company and Eko electricity company are there for you. If they fail, involve NERC.
That will be all, for now.

Dem be thief...

Number 1 is IKEDC. They only give power to Oworonsoki five times in a week and for those times, they bring power by 11:00pm to take it by 6:00am. This has been the norm and all we use by that time is fan, fridge and freezer. At month end, they bring my N8,000 bill saying its the power consumed in my area and that they record billing from the transformer that I dont know... Even when there was no light for over three weeks, we still got our regular bill and I wonder how they said they are metering us...

They are scammers. IKEDC OLE... EKEDC OLE... EBEDC OLE...

IKEDC OLE OLE OLE

Thief na him una be. I always tell you people on phone that your decision makers will sleep in Jail one day... one day una monkey go go market and him no go come back home...

Do you know I tried to be a good Nigerian sometime... previously, I share a meter with my neighour and we are six using same meter and at month end, I pay like N800 and I thought to myself that IKEDC are saying we should all get a meter and I went to get mine and I landed in this palava... Something told me not to register it in my name but my wife's name and her maiden name else I wont be able to be abusing and sending them emails... They are so so stupid and only know about their pockets. They have been to my house like twice to do the reading and stuff but come to think of it, is it everytime that I will power all my bulbs, TV and all appliances in the house? Its never done. They all want to become billionaires on our head and what they dont know is that it will choke them up to their 4th generation.

As at Dec 2018, I get bills of N12k monthly... Thank God I heard of when they are paying for prepaid meter and I paid into the UBA account N25k... last two weeks, my prepaid meter finally came.

praise the Lord.

Nigeria, always moving back and forth. The problem of this monumental excuse of a country is institutional. The foundation in which the country was built on is faulty, fraudulent and criminal. No amount of policies and laws can salvage the situation, it's from the root and not just by trimming the branches. If we are serious as a people to redeem the country, we have to come together in one accord and disband the country and start afresh. A house built upon a faulty foundation can NEVER stand, we shall keep on running in circles until right thing is done no matter who ever we elect to lead us. Of course this can hardly be achieved because a lot of people are beneficiaries of this colossal fraud
