These pics are doing a whole lot of injustice to this university. It's simply a beautiful university, silently churning out academic gurus over time. Some of its strongest faculties include theatre arts, medicine and law. Of the 8 of us that that graduated second upper in my set, we have a judge, a SAN, a couple of high profile executive management gurus in banks and financial services outfits, we have a law dean, amongst others. If I had to live my life again, i will still be a malabite

Nigerian Universities are always fine on picture, but far from what's on ground. Though, the school is fine to an extent when compared to others.

Sad to say, but this school is seriously infested with secret cult activities. Cultism is synonymous with the University of Calabar. Majority of lecturers and even department Deans are active cultists. Until the school purges itself of this scourge, no amount of cement buildings will change the poor educational experience that Unical currently is known for.

I will never forget the 5th pic of the stadium in main camp. I was a fresher then and had just completed my registration and was chilling in the stands watching a practice match for "Malabo World Cup," When a cool dude came up to me and said, "fresh man," and smiled at me. We had an easy conversation about my course and I asked him stuff about the school.

We said our goodbyes and he went his way, three minutes later I heard gun shots and saw people scampering from the scene for safety, I took off as well, praying not to be caught in the crossfire or get hit by a stray bullet.

After the fiasco died down, students and the school security were gathering around something, out of curiosity, I moved in to get a closer look and behold: it was the guy I just spoke to. He was shot and had half his face sliced off. I will never forget the vacant stare of his glazed dead eyes.

That incident really defined my stay in the school and shaped the man I would become. Sad memories, but memories nonetheless. This happened around 1999 and was just adjacent of the VC office at the time.

Great Malabites and Malabresses!

After this period, cultism was tackled in the school. It became low key

Kindly mind the use of the word "churning"

Just to clarify you, this phrase, "there is only two universities in Nigeria" is only applicable to UNN, not just because its bearing the nation's name; Nigeria, but because of the quality of graduates it keeps churning out.

abi, don't mind Op, the only university in Nigeria is The University of Nigeria and others, any where you go in the world just tell them u schooled in Nigeria. Ur degree is tagged ( Bsc Nigeria) unlike unical that will look somewhat cumbersome like (B-whatever university of calabar)

I think this reason is weighed enough to change the caption to something attributed to UNICAL

Things have gone really bad. Unical has failed to embrace modernization of infrastructure and therefore looks disappointing.

Memories....
I am a graduate of A. B. U Zaria and i served at College of Medical Sciences in the University of Calabar. To be honest, it's a beautiful school but backward. Way backward... ICT, STAFF ACCOMMODATION (OFFICES), QUALITY OF RESEARCH, LABORATORIES, LECTURE THEATERS, STUDENT WELFARE, FACULTIES you name it, are just in a sorry state. You can imagine a Computer Science lecturer (with a PHD) struggling with his c++ programming lecture. They still do registration manually and EVERYTHING in the school is monetized. My friends and I often called it UNICASH. LOL

Nepotism, politics and did I forget cultism

The school get fine girls sha. U can't take that away from UNICAL.

I'm not hyping my being an ABUSITE or trying to demean Bottom line is, having started in 1975 this school ought to be better than what it is today.

My humble opinion though.

God bless MALABITES and MALABRESSES

No need for all these talks, UNICAL was University of Nigeria, Calabar campus before it was renamed to UNICAL, where is the competition?

Malabites!!! Axcion! You are right. There are many malabite medical doctors here in UK and US doing great. The foundation of our education was sound indeed.

Of course there's a Mosque. Interestingly, It's just a couple metres away from the UNICAL CHAPEL OF REDEMPTION.

There is a mosque near the male hostels in Malabor in those days. We helped in building it but not as big as the church. The Catholic members in calabar town built that church.
