Hello house,

I will still go through the pages with time but I wish to migrate to Canada. I have a degree in Information Security and also with good knowledge of Blockchain and cryptocurrency.

Also, I have academics IELTS result with a 7.5/9.

Dear nairalanders, kindly help with the process, cost and all possible tidbits to get to Canada and also, does this look feasible this year?

I just got turned down from a job cos I don't have work permit, the HR thought I was already a go but she advised I work towards coming around as it's easier to get a job while on ground than away in another country.

I seek your candid opinion and suggestions in this migrating thing.

Appreciate lots.

Nice that you both reached a conclusion on the discussion. I had posted this in the past and may not get into much legalese. Let everyone learn from the story.

Sorry o but I'm just wondering why he couldn't just use his British passport to enter Canada back cos I know they don't need a visa.

Found the statement below on the cic website:

"The following travellers (visa exempt countries, UK nationals are on the list) need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to board their flight to Canada. However, these travellers do not need an eTA if entering by land or sea – for instance driving from the U.S. or coming by bus, train, or boat, including cruise ship."

The British traveler denied entry in the post you quoted would need an eTA to enter Canada via an airport..

Also found the statement below on cbc news website

"eTA: It's essentially a "basic pre-screening of visa-exempt individuals. U.S. citizens are exempt from the new rule.

And electronic travel authorization only affects people coming to Canada by air. Travellers arriving by land or by sea don't need it".

hello

i think what happens is that these organisations have security companies in Nigeria that carry out these checks on their behalf so no it is not a specific govt agency to the best of my knowledge.
Your friend will just have to wait until he or she is confirmed..nothing can be influenced here.

Ehrnie:
Good afternoon/morning/evening (depending on what part of the world y'all in)...I have an enquiry and I believe someone here can help.

Does anyone know the specific Nigerian Govt Agency that handles criminal checks...? A friend received an offer of employment, to start work two weeks ago. However, he's still waiting for his criminal check to return from Nig. sad a reflection of the state of the nation.

Has anyone experienced this before? How can we expedite the process? what department handles this? How do most employment agencies request criminal checks from Nig...by email, post etc.). Answers will help us chase up the process.

I eagerly await an answer. Many thanks!
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by Ehrnie: 9:35am On Jun 29, 2018
4712A6:

Force CIDs handle this. In Lagos, it is at Alagbon just beside the passport office. Tell them what you need, how you need it and when. Nigeria's not that terrible, they have a process for this on their site. In summary, contact any police office or officer, they'll eventually direct you.

CIDs are the HQs of criminal investigation cases so they have their records and can help with the paperwork. There could be no better source of authority than them to give you this security clearance.

When you ask how Nigerian companies do the check, does that relate to your request? For the company giving the offer, I suggest you confirm from them how they want it to be sent. Specifically the department to be addressed, name of the addressee, postal code etc. I trust the Police to courier it directly.

Many many thanks for your reply. The criminal check has now been completed and sent...We didn't need to do anything, thankfully. Apparently the wait time is 3 weeks...but the public holidays in Nig. stretched it by a few days.

Many thanks again!

Long post alert

silent reader on this thread. just thought to share short landing experience.

I landed Toronto Pearson on a weekend in April this year. At arrivals, there are machines and a queue for categories of arrivals. For example if you are a family with kids, they pick u off the line to the closest machines while others like us continue ,in my own case,in the very long queue.Anyways, finally got to a machine..scanned my passport data page...took my picture and then answered the typical questions such as declaration of goods..etc. in my case i said no even though i had a ghana must go bag of food as requested by my hosts. machine printed out my declaration form ,got to immigration officer who asked same set of questions on card and i gave the same answers as on card. she marked my card with a pink pen and then directed me in the direction of a colleague who then directed me to a glass enclosure where the border officials were. I don't know if it was because of the weekend but the queue was brutal to the extent that while i was still on the queue the SIN window closed for the day.there were about 5 or 6 officials on seat and they took their time.the line moved really slow because all different types of visas were on the same queue, visit visa, study visa..etc...they were the ones that got the short end of the stick cos their questions were really intense..what have you come to study?ok tell me about so and so related to the study..blah blah ..and then the visit guy that brought 7k cash and 3 bags for a visit....etc i tell you i was tired...i stood..sat on my hand luggage..squatted..stood again..it was bad. Finally got to my turn and it was the official that had been intense with the visa person..i prayed not him God please but alas it was him. i prayed ehn..but got there ..asked for passport,COPR,address and completed the forms..asked me to sign both copies and released me..less than 5 mins ,phew! SIN window obviously was closed so just went to the welcome to canada section where i was given a bag filled with book guides, newcomers leaflets etc..and then to baggage claim. Due to the long wait at Border,my bags had been dropped at the section where my plane released passenger bags and other planes that were just arriving were using the claim areas. eitherways took a bit to locate it..finally did....handed over my declaration to customs at exit..didnt even check and i was out.1/2

Why on earth would you do this? Misguided on a number of levels including the fact that you could have been fined.

Congratulations on your landing.

Thank you for your good wishes.

Nope not misguided just confident,I did that because i was mostly satisfied that what i had did not match the definition of what was required to be declared. i read carefully.

Also on getting my bags i noticed that the bags including that of the food had been xrayed as there was a sticker on them letting me know. I am sure if there were issues i would have been delayed or fined as you said.

I still think it is a bad idea not to be forthright in a customs declaration. The usual challenge you can have is not whether the food items are allowed or not, but that you have provided a false declaration on a legal document. With a difficult customs officer, you can have a very very bad time....

That said, I've attached a snap shot from the customs declaration form, and if you say what you had does not match the definition of what you need to declare, then i guess you're ok. However, I think it is extremely difficult for that to be true once you have a food item, as it says any "part, products or by-products" need to be declared. Just out of curiosity, it would be interesting to know what food item is not in this category as I believe even spices would be included.

Personally, I think it's not worth it to be caught being economical with the truth on a customs declaration form. On my last trip, I marked that I had food items, the officer verbally asked me what items I had (I gave a few examples, not all cos I couldn't recall all off hand) and I passed through without anything being checked. Considering how smooth it went, it really would have been silly to get caught explaining why I would have lied on the form.

For the SIN, I did not have anything sent to my address. Once all my details were put into the system, a copy was printed out at the Service Canada desk and handed over to me immediately. However, an address was requested but it there was no need for the SIN to be mailed.

Are you perhaps asking about the PR card? See the below from @alterego:

alt3r3go:
I had this same question prior to (short) landing, let me just share my experience and lessons learnt.

When we landed, the officer asked for an addy, i told him i will send it later online but he insisted i gave him one even if it was temporary, that i can change it later within a 3 week period. He also gave me a number to call to do so. The number always directed me to an answering machine that "everyone is busy i should raise a CSE" and then after two weeks of callls, i raised a CSE for me and my spouse (Copy paste same message) to update the address and we both got auto-response mails from cic a few seconds later.

I linked my PR card application to my cic and got an email when it was approved. A few days later, My wife got an email (her address on the email was the new address) about sending another passport. So i am thinking, since her address was updated, then mine must be updated as well right? WRONG!!

After another two weeks of no pr card, contacted CIC to ask when and what addy they sent my Pr card. Turns out it was the first addy i gave at POE. Anyways, any system with humans will be prone to errors.

So it's best to keep it simple. If you already have someone that can keep it safe for you, just give them that addy right away. I know someone that gave an address with a different province at POE and no issues (This was after my case though).

If you don't have that address, then maybe raise a CSE and request they acknowledge the change of addy.

Then link your PR card so you know in time when things start to go south.

Our experience for Calgary was quite straightforward.

Arrived in Calgary 6 weeks before the baby was due. Went to registry to sign up for health care and asked for the Alberta healthcare number immediately, so we had it written down while waiting for the card to arrive in the post within a week (I think it was actually just a couple of days later).

Went straight to sign up with a regular family doctor (walk-in) who immediately made the referral. Scans and tests were requested because the medical report from Nigeria was insufficient. The family doctor did a lot of the initial work. Called various hospitals & maternity clinics till he found one to take us straightaway. In fact, he referred us to the maternity clinic for the same day, and then called us in the evening to confirm we had seen the doctor. At the maternity clinic, they simply booked us in to see a doctor the following week.

Due to the proximity to the due date, at the maternity clinic, doctor asked that we schedule weekly visits. So after every appointment, we scheduled a follow up for the following week. Everything went smoothly, and honestly it was the best experience ever. If you're coming into Alberta, I doubt you will have much to worry about.

Please I'd really like to know if after the health card and all, did you have to pay for anything?

Consultations and tests(not all) are free. You would still have to pay for medications.

We didn't pay for anything except medication from the pharmacy, prior to delivery. From the moment we went into the hospital for the delivery, everything was covered. However, if you opt for a private room instead of a regular room with multiple beds after delivery, you might need to pay extra for that.
