Oh my....

Please, can we be more careful on our roads?!

Danfo and passenger, please, stop over speeding and don't drop on wrong places- the place you are over speeding to is never worth your life.

The basics in driving; just using the side mirrors, checking your brakes and car well-being before journeys etc are (no matter how boring) life savers.

You need an experience in driving to know that many people using cars and buses on our roads are disasters waiting to happen. As you drive with care, always be vigilant about other car and bus drivers.

Anytime you have a constructive prick within your spirit (for the spiritual sensitive) not to drive, you might want to keep your ride and use public transport.

Don't ever drive when you are drunk or sleep drowsy.

God help us.

Telling this to Nigerians is like pouring water on a stone.

I'm still confused why are this People lying to the public, 54 cars got burnt and 9confirmed dead. WTF we're not dumb, I heard about young kids that were burnt also, are they not human beings?
How many people escaped we only saw a man who was lucky to come out of the inferno. I'm sure more than 70 lose their lives but they still wouldn't say the truth.

It feels sad to lose a loved one, hundreds of family are in deep pain. I pray God continue to save Everybody from Tragedy.

Lagos is still the capital of Nigeria when it comes to emergency and rescue management. If it were to be other states the road will still be blocked with burnt cars even after two weeks. Kudos to Ambode and his people.

But the world has gone past reactive leadership. What we need now are proactive leaders, who have the foresight and political will to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place.
When you are proactive in Nigeria, you are called over sabi. When you foresee such disasters before they happen, people rebuke you in the name of Jesus, Allah and everything they hold sacred.

I was told, the error park of a danfo bus confused the tanker driver even though tankers had no business driving during the day time, is insane

After the evacuation, what next? What are the measures to prevent/reduce future occurrence? Most of the trucks on Nigerian roads are disasters waiting to happen. Most are old and badly maintained.

I know a truck owner who encouraged her truck driver to manage the truck on trips from Lagos to the east despite being fully aware that the truck brakes are bad.
Many truck drivers are not licenced, they drink and drive, some even give their trucks to their motorboys to drive while they rest.

The law enforcement agents are culpable as well. You see them at different depots collecting money from truck drivers instead of carrying out their duties of ensuring the trucks are safe to run on the roads.

The various unions too at these depots don't ensure that trucks that are allowed to load petroleum products are safe, because they own most of the trucks on the roads. If the government tries to enact/enforce laws the unions will threaten to embark on strike, hence government and their agencies tries to avoid confrontations with the truck drivers and owners.

Government should fix the rails so many of these trucks will have no reasons to be on the roads. Allow for modular refineries to be built wherever it is possible, so tankers don't have to converge in large numbers in Lagos for loading. Road safety officers instead of looking for gratification should do their jobs, if a truck is bad, it should not load or be allowed to move about on our roads. Movement restrictions should be enforced as well.

These are few of the simple steps that a government/society that is concerned about the safety of lives and properties will take to prevent/limit future occurrences, instead of waiting to send condolences to future victims of avoidable disasters.

Nice piece.

I want to believe every indivudual understands what "Safety First " implies.
Till we stick to such and apply it where necessary, we will reduce the number of disasters as a result of accidents which are ordinarily supposed to be incidents or near miss if they are likely to occur.

Heh. You're giving the bridge a clean of health without any testing?

The guys who designed the twin towers were also confident the structure would not fail based on their design.

Bridges are not buildings and I can tell you the structural integrity can not be hampered by the fire incident that lasted less than 6hrs as there was no hit/impact.

In fire, concrete performs well – both as an engineered structure, and as a material in its own right. It has the highest fire resistance classification (class AI) under EN 13501-1:2007- A1:2009.

Concrete does not burn – it cannot be set on fire and it does not emit any toxic fumes when affected by fire. Concrete is proven to have a high degree of fire resistance and, in the majority of applications, can be described as virtually fireproof. This excellent performance is due, in the main, to concrete’s constituent materials (cement and aggregates) which, when chemically combined within concrete, form a material that is essentially inert and, importantly for fire safety design, has relatively poor thermal conductivity. It is this slow rate of conductivity (heat transfer) that enables concrete to act as an effective fire shield not only between adjacent spaces, but also to protect itself from fire damage.

I live in festac. We had the very same thing happen there December last year. A tanker on the bridge caught fire. They have demolished an entire section of the bridge and are recasting support beams.

And yes, that is also an rc bridge

This is the first hit of a Google search for fire concrete bridge

From the first link, the cause of fire is still under investigation and duration of burn wasn't stated.

The second link wouldn't come up.

I'm not in anyway saying testing is not in line but I'm pretty sure the fire incident has little or no effect on the concrete structure.

I hope you know that the average time for fire on concrete cover for reinforced concrete structure is 2hrs for domestic fire. This was a petrol tanker station at a point with intense heat burning (for an uncertain amount of tine). The class of the fire is different and may not require up to a 2 hour time period before the concrete start spalling and the reinforcements buckling.

Unless you've carried out tests to confirm that the above isn't the case, I'm at a loss as to how pretty sure you can be...

I'm just seeing this.

First. Concrete can burn, it just requires the right amount of heat. There's nothing that can't burn given the right amount heat.

Second. Yes, concrete can withstand heat for some time, but this also depends on the intensity and duration of the heat. In any case, tests have proven that after 2hrs of class A fire (I think, have to review my books, been a long time), concrete will start to lose its properties and hence may not protect the reinforcement embedded anymore. This means that with adequate heat, the concrete is gone. And with this, the reinforcement melts and changes arrangement and or composition, making it also susceptible to failure when loaded.

Mr Oyb your replied also gave the Festac bridge example, and he's right, but you still think the bridge is fine?

Finally, you said the wearing course just needs to be removed. What exactly do you mean by the wearing course? Do you mean the asphalt, or does this include the concrete underneath? If you correctly mean the asphalt, then I can tell you for free that the concrete may have also weakened and spalled. And if you removed the concrete, you can actually know if the reinforcement there need to be replaced or not.

The wearing course- ASPHALT of course

Now going with your submission, with raging fire with time less than 6hrs, the concrete for me is still in order.

From experience, I was opportuned to work on a burnt section of Marine beach bride, Ijora, Lagos. Both destructive n NDT were carried out in relation to unburnt section. Result shows relatively same compressive strength of concrete both for the piers, girders n deck.

We were required to produce concrete jacketting to the existing structure as need arises for increase in both static and dynamic load. Also, additional post tension cable was installed as well as replacement of bearings carried out.
