Which market is best to sell at Ibadan?
Re: How To Sell Plantain In Profitable Markets In Nigeria by jobzytravels(m): 9:02am On Jun 01, 2017
The farm is an acre with about 700 suckers....will it be profitable to sell at lagos or plantain flour company also?

The best is reaching agreement with processing company/companies to supply at a good fixed rate regularly.
With that you are safe from fluctuation in price

Marketing is one of the important things to consider when venturing into agribusiness.I have always say that you can sell any Agric products but at what price? Is the price profitable or not?
I consider my market first before farming any crop;I asked myself questions before starting any venture, how do I sell my produce? Whom should I sell to?and at what price? which I believe you should ask yourself as well before starting.
This is very important in any agribusiness venture.
That's why I only specialise in crops that have good market for its uptake when produced.
Different crop have different market chain and you should be well versed with in it.The way you will sell plantain is different from cassava or watermelon.
Different crop with different market.
Plantain as one of my favourite crop is highly lucrative if you are able to get your sales right.
There are 2 ways you can sell your plantain in Nigeria.
1.Through the local markets- Mile12,ikorodu ,ketu markets e.t.c
2.Selling to companies processing flour and chips
The first way is not only unreliable, its not all that profitable. You are going to be taken advantage of using the first way and this is majorly where 95% of farmers used to sell their plantain.
This market is subjected to supply and demand; that is if you have many farmers bringing plantain to the market, the prices falls rapidly and vice versa.
The only time the market price is high and not subjected to the law of demand and supply is during August of every year but the question is Am I going to wait till every August each year to make money?

The truth is that the processing companies have the capacity to process but the quality of the quantities of what they need is the challenge.
Most plantain farmers are not producing the quality these companies need and the farmers are forced to sell at the local market where they are taken advantage of.
The companies i partner with in selling my plantain demand from us to produce the plantain variety that have the characteristics of what they need.
This is because most of the other varieties reduces the quality of their plantain flour.

Selling to the processing companies requires that you know what they need before producing it.
Thats why I can be confident of ready made market for my plantain farm, those I am currently managing their farm and those that already have the Giant French horn variety on their farm.

I am also currently working with a plantain flour company of 20T/day capacity to get more local farmers to cultivate more of the plantain to improve their income
This is the best way to sell profitably your plantain.

Lesgupnigeria:

Cost of production varies from location to location.
You will need 1000 suckers on an acre at 2m by 2m spacing.
Where is the farmland located?

OP, please you should do more to educate the house!
please provide a comprehensive breakdown needed for a plantain farm per acre as this would really help all of us reading through your thread and considering our next business idea...if you really intend to!

I would also suggest you attend to most of the enquires here to make this thread more informative instead of redirecting to WhatsApp!

Thanks!

WHAT LOCATION ARE U PLEASE?

I STAY IN LAGOS. PLEASE WHERE DO YOU THINK I CAN GET 1 HECTARE AT REASONABLE PRICE FOR PLANTAIN FARM. I HOPE 1 HECTARE IS REASONABLE ENOUGH FOR COMMERCIAL PLANTAIN FARMING.

I GUESS IT IS ADVISABLE IF THE FARM IS NOT TOOO FAR AWAY FROM WHERE I STAY. RIGHT?

LASTLY CASSAVA OR PLANTAIN WHICH WOULD U ADVISE. BOTH SHOULD HAVE THEIR GOOD POINTS I KNOW, BUT FOR A NEWBIE, WHICH WOULD U ADVISE.

KINDLY WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR REPLY

You can't classify 1 hectare plantain farm for commercial purposes.
I am in Ogbomosho,Oyo state.
Both are okay.it all depend on your preference.

Nice one guys . This is really encouraging. Looking at going into commercial plantain farming on about 200 acres of land in Ogun state. I have been doing research for almost two months now but my major challenge as been the target market. You don't just produce without having a target market and am not too comfortable with all these mile 12, Idi-oro market, ikorodu n co. Please does export market exist for plantain ? Also , can Cameroonian plantain do well in Nigeria and is there market for it ? It's always advisable to know all these before venturing into this kind of business. I will really appreciate a candid response/advise from anyone. Thanks

we are yet to meet up with up to 20% demand of the local market.
when the local market is saturated, then you can look at the export market.
open market is not the way to go.
My advice is for you to do more offline market research, meet with people actively involve in the plantain value chain.
or if you want to strike a contract sale deal in the area of selling your plantain before you start your plantain farm, you can contact me.
