Atheists believe that they and deists are more alike than deists are to theists likewise agnostics.

Even if he was a deist he would fit quite well into an atheists worldview because he does not believe in a Personal God aka Personal deity while atheists do not believe in any deity at all.

He once said he was raped by a roman catholic priest as a young lad and his hatred for God and religion began from there.

No wonder he does not believe in "a loving God" as he confessed.

For me though both are two sides of the same coin.

Deist nor Atheist has any belief that an interventionist God is active in the world at the present time, answers prayers, sits in judgment, or runs any heaven or hell.

Both reject theistic beliefs that include divine revelation, divine intervention, miracles, answered prayers, inerrant holy books, the anthropomorphization of a deity, details of an afterlife, a specific moral code, etc.

Neither deism nor atheism are religions. They are philosophical positions. Deism is not a religion, as it rejects the very things that make up a religion.
