So all those guys bashing my previous transcript. By the time I'm done with this one, I'm sure you will be calm.

So my interview was for 6:45, I got into Lagos the previous day and lodged a trekkable distance to the embassy. So I got there really early. Then.. the whole queue and biometrics things.
When I was in the interview line, there were two men and like 5 or so women VOs. I wanted the elderly man in Windows 2 to interview me because I saw him approve a visa. I kept praying but when it was getting to my turn I felt I might be assigned to the notorious Windows 7 so I quickly ran to the restroom. Lol!
I came back and joined the windows 2 myself and the uniformed orderly saw me and called me out, I just kept smiling. I was later pointed to the guy in Windows 5 who turned to be the best.
Me: Goodmorning as I pass him my i20 and sevis

VO: Goodmorning.

Me: I started explaining without being asked ' my course is International Development Studies' it's written differently on my document.

Vo: (nods) where are you going (or something like that I'm not sure.)

Me: I'm going for my masters in IDS at the Elliott school of international affairs, George Washington University ( he actually didnot let me finish)

VO: oh that's a good school.

Me: thank you

Vo: what's your academic background

Me: I have BSc in Political science and administration, graduated 2015 and afterwards I did some volunteering job before proceeding to work as a legislative aide to the honourable member representing my constituency.

Vo: so why are you going for this course

Me: I chose this because I want a career in development and policy research (spoke slowly and dimmed my eyes while shaking my head to show how passionate I am) I believe the most effective tools of development are Good policies and research. (To this he nods his head very well and types) I'll be specializing in International Development management, because I'll love to work with development organizations and in the long run hopefully AU.

VO: how many schools did you apply?

Me: 4 ; UMASS, Uni. Of Kansas, St Joseph uni and GWU.

Vo: how many admitted you
Me: all

Vo: so why did you choose this one

Me: it's one of the best schools of international affairs in the world. (He nods) I did my research using my field of study as focus and it's top ten in US and top 30 in the world. I chose it specifically because of the way the courses are tailored, we get to study in cohorts, there's this capstone... (he cuts in)

Vo: yea yea I know about that.
Vo: who is your sponsor
Me: family

Vo: I'll be approving your visa, I also didn't hear anything else, I was listening but I didn't hear. He didn't circle my white paper either.

It seemed like a long interview now but it was not up to 2 minutes and it seemed so easy because of his body language, he was practically nodding at everything I said, it is GRACE. However I comported myself well, smiled a bit and spoke my phonee too, I kind of noticed they like that, but what do I know! A relaxed body language and eye contact helps a lot. I was looking at him even when he wasn't looking at me. I'm super grateful for this platform and I hope my transcript helps someone too.
All the best!!!

Congratulations !!!! It is very rare for a nigerian to take constructive criticisms in good fate. I am wishing you all the best in your academic journey

Hello everyone!

What a great job guys are doing here. God bless you you all. A friend directed me to this thread.

I really need an urgent advice; I had my interview at Lagos US Embassy on July 11th and after the dialogue with the VO, she gave me a paper written on it "Electronic bank statements; 'mybankstatement', send code to US Embassy Nigeria, cost N1000" and then circled LagosNIV@state.gov on the white paper given to me.

Before you asked why didn't I ask what she meant by that, I already insulted myself, but believe me, I wasn't myself. Before she gave me the paper, she asked what my sponsor is doing, I told her a successful businessman, that owns a company that is into freight forwarding, importing and exporting. She went inside with the statement for a few minutes, came back and asked me to tell my sponsor to send an electronic bank statement to the email above.

When I checked my status, it read Administrative Processing. Please if anyone has had similar case or know about it, kindly help a brother. I sent a mail to the email above for more information on what to do, no response yet. My passport is still with me.

I will surely post my transcript and explain any steps taken once I'm settled with it, so that others can also learn from it and know what to do in case. Thank you.

God bless you guys!

So you got pained by my post and also posts from others and you decided to do the right thing. Aren't you feeling better now that you have done the right thing? Someone will definitely learn from the better transcript you have shared and that is the essence of this community. Wish you well.

Please can you let us know such choices?

KDK:

My brother, I thank God for you. I like the way you researched and used the research in answering your questions. You gave very pertinent advise on dressing. We need to dress the part to show some level of seriousness. When I was there, there was a man from a big multi national oil company that has it's world HQ in Houston. This guy wore jeans and shirt yet he was coming for interview for a business meeting. I understand the casual dressing but atleast put a jacket to sort of formalise the dressing. He was refused (I am not categorically saying the dressing caused it but we should eliminate obstacles). People should please dress well. The people interviewing you are the most casual dressers but they are never dressed casually when interviewing you as a VO.

But guy, why didn't you ask her what state she is based in the US that you may come looking for her. wink

All the best bruv. Enjoy your studies in yankee and make wise choices in your future endeavours (don't be like some of us that made choices that we regret till date). God bless.

Good morning!

Having find your way here you have been delivery from agents, praised the Lord!.

Your will need GRE, TOEFL, Transcripts recommendation letters from your lecturers, write a good SOP, some (very few) programs might ask for statement of research intent.

Start your school search now, you could use some help from these websites; gradcafe, petersons.com, USnews.com. Usually its advisable that when making choice of school there should be a mix of ambitious, moderate, and safe, in your final list.

Email the grad coordinator if the respective programs you intend to apply to and ask them questions that can not be easily gotten from the program website. Questions about funding, which faculty is launching a new project (it means the faculty will have some form of funding) etc.

There are still many things I have to tell you. I will advise you follow this thread; https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre read from first page to the end, by the time you are down you will have a better perspective.

Cost analysis;
GRE: $205
TOEFL: $180
Application fees for about 5 schools (it is usually advisable to apply to more than 1 school): average of $60*5 = $300
Transcripts: depending on your school it could cost you 30k.

If the school you are applying to asked you to do WES then like additional $200. ( I will advise you to avoid school that ask for WES and Official transcript except you are 70% sure of admission or you are bucks up - omo baba olowo).

Goodluck.

Thank you very much

My Alma mata requests I pay $52 before WES verification of transcripts email can be acknowledged...i don't understand, is it the new trend for Wes or the school just want to exploit us.

Good day people,

I was denied Canadian student last year for 2 reasons 1) they re not sure I'm a student 2) I don't ve financial n personal asset.

Im going for US student visa now and considering doing valuation for my piece of land with stamp. Considering the cost of valuation -25k+, Is it worth it? I just have the impression that the US embassy ll ve access to that info.

Secondly, someone was telling me that I need a reference letter from lecturer n employer, employment letter for the interview...re these actually needed cos I do not see any on people's transcript here.

Thanks

I guess your sponsor's bank is GTB.

I used this when going for my interview even though funding and loan more than cover for my cost of attendance.

You can now send your bank statement to the embassy from your Internet banking platform. Once you login, go to statement and click on it, you'll see send statement to the embassy.

You'll be charged 1,000 naira and will be sent a code which you'll print and take to the embassy. That is the cade the VO would use to access the statement on the system.

So tell your sponsor to send the statement to the embassy from his/her Internet banking platform and print the generated code and give to you. It is that printed code that you'll send to them.

I don't know if this is possible with other banks as I used GTB to do mine. Also, I used online banking so I don't know if it can be done from the branch.

Thank you

Hi All,

For a single working class guy, how can he prove home ties as I read in one of the previous pages that 'returning to your company' is not enough proof for home tie as the VOs know that MOST organization would not keep a position open for someone that went to study abroad.

Pls, lend your thoughts. Thank you

Good afternoon people

Please is there anyone in the house who chose to study Geography/GIS in the united state, has been interviewed by the VO and has been issued a Visa? Please I need your help. My interview is just a week away. The first issue is the issue of home tie and the second is pertaining to the course. I've surfed the net and I couldn't come up with a better response to *why the course?* Please I need a response as soon as possible.

Madam, this is a mutually beneficial community where people learn from the strength (approvals) and weaknesses (denials) of members as there are lessons to draw from both.

You were denied a visa before, the logical thing to do is to drop your transcript first to serve as a lesson to others and to be used as a basis for advising you.

Thank you

On OPT, I wouldn't advise that you travel especially if you don't have a job yet. If you have already started working, the risk is much less but I wouldn't still advise to except really really important-in which case you would need to take a lot of documents along with you. Contact your school's international office.

Thank you thank you Biikeys... that was helpful. I gave it up already, more so that my parents already filed I-130 form. It increases the risk.

Yes, this is the real deal. Stating what you studied and going to study give confidence to those in the same shoe like you who are preparing for their interviews. There was a time some people thought it's only chemistry or science folks here that get visa most. You see why your course is a vital part of your interview transcript that we are all looking forward to see.

Visa Approved on 5th of July.

I was directed to a cool guy at window 5. I was listening to the conversation with others before me and I was able to get an idea of his question type. He was also standing throughout his interviews

Vo: Good morning with a big smile, and motioned for me to pass my documents.
Me: Good morning

Vo: *asked a question, can't really remember* but it was similar to why I am going to the usa?
Me : I am going for my masters Industrial Relations and Human Resources (was supposes to be the other way around but I just flowed) at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

Huge congrats to you.
Best wishes in the US.
Vo: why HRIR?
Me: because I studied HR in my undergrad it helped me understand the importance of HR in every org. HR is the arm of business that manages the people in the organization and Industrial Relations refers to the institutions that are put in place to manage the people. The people are an organization's greatest asset so as an HR you are managing the greatest asset in an organization and studying this course is in line with my career goals

Vo:How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 6, Cornell Uni, U of M, Penn State, U of Denver Colorado, U of Texas Arlington and West Virginia

Vo: Mouthed 6, nodded his head, seeming impressed and said "how many admits?
Me: 4, mentioned U of M, Penn state ( this was a mistake, their decision was still pending), U of Colorado, U of Texas. (Didn't mention WVU as the 4th admit)

Vo: So why this school?
Me : Of the schools that accepted me, U of M is ranked higher. It is a prestigious school sometimes called a public ivy league. The business school is ranked 16th by usnews.com (at this point was nodding in approval to what I was saying) and HRIR program is one of the best internationally. I also spoke with the current students and alumni, and they confirmed the benefits of the program structure and curriculum. (At this point he was looking at his computer doing some stuffs, not sure he was typing) I just had the inkling to continue talking) I would also have the opportunity to participate in the Carlson intl HR case competition which is hosted by the CSOM with all schools in the US that has the HR program in participation, even schools outside the US ( he looked up and continued to listen to me). It's a great competition which will allow students give real solution to live business cases. (He nodded)

Vo: looking at his computer, when did you graduate?
Me: Jan 2016

Vo: still looking at his computer, When did you finish your NYSC?
Me: (it now occurred to me he was trying to confirm my Answers with what's on my ds160) Last year. 2017. May

VO: what have you been doing since then?
Me: I worked (corrected myself) I am working as an Executive Assistant to the CEO At... And I mentioned my duties. (He nodded in confirmation)

V.o : I Can see you are covered with tuition waiver (looking at my I-20) , so who's responsible for the deficit?
Me: my Dad
Asked me what My dad does and I told him. I was about saying I have his bank statement here but he was already nodding, seeming impressed
Then he started doing stuff on his computer for a long while. I just started praying for favour but somehow with his demeanor, I had a feeling I got it already.

V.o - noticed something on his computer and asked have you Paid for your sevis,
(I replied yes and he seemed unsatisfied so I told him the receipt was with him with other documents then he nodded again, asked when I paid and I said 3 days ago. He seemed satisfied after crosschecking)

Vo: have you applied for visa before
Me: no

V.o : are you single
He looked up and smiled when I was saying yes and chorused it with me.
He then returned my sevis and I-20 saying I have been approved and collect my passport etc...

( it was more like a conversation and I demonstrated using my hands. I didnt use all my rehearsed words. No documents asked. It was just God's favour)

Thanks to the nairaland family, started this journey July last year here on NL. grateful to femi321 who was the first to answer my naive questions then, profOjah for putting me through, Chidinho, ponpon and others I failed to mention. Thank you!

Sponsor? Family? And no further questions were asked? Please What was written on your I-20 regarding your sponsorship?

Sponsor--- family is the best in my own opinion. If something goes wrong with the statement of account used for the admission before the interview, you can look for another soa within your family for the interview. My I-20 also carried 'family'. This is what I guess was on that young girl's I-20, the girl that said her uncle and sister are her sponsors few weeks ago.

Glocal1:
State whatever improvement you have made in your application.
V O was not convinced about the reasons you cited for studying at UCMO.
I didn't make any improvement on my transcript cause I didn't even get to a point of been asking to submit Any document or if I wrote any test..why i like UCMO was the first big question apart from the where are you going question... TOFEL Was waived For me by the school immediately my WES Evaluated transcript was send to the school and GRE was not requested cause of my course "masters in communication"

Then go ahead and work on the way you deliver your answers.
You can post your proposed transcript here for correction and improvement.
