Are Our Governors Ripe Enough To Manage State Police In Nigeria? by Okonsyourguy(m): 3:17pm On Jul 12, 2018 |
Good people of Nigeria, news emanating from the hallowed chambers of the Nigerian Senate has it that it has received for first reading, a bill to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the purpose of creating the state police. Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekwerenmadu is listed as the sponsor of the State Police bill and he is supported by 75 senators in the quest. Following the topsy-turvy state of security across Nigeria, many feel this bill is long overdue. With the bill, the Senate wants to remove Policing from the Exclusive List and put in in the concurrent list, where it gives state governors to establish and manage a police force within their states. The matter of State Policing had been a controversial one for years because the governors clamouring to manage their state's security can hardly pay civil servants salaries as it is, let alone adding the burden of police salaries and allowances. Kudos to President Buhari for not interfering in the law-making process as the senators are going about their business without rancour. The question is, can our state governors establish and maintain State Police across the 36 states of the Federation? Will Nigeria be more secure following the establishment of State Police? This question is boring. The real issue is our checks and balances strong enough to prevent abuse. If the answer is no what needs to be fixed. Hoping for benevolent dictators is fools errend. We have state assembly to check them and federal government aswell. If these too arent enough then the system is broken. |

Their Commissioners, Assistants, Deputies and IGP will be certified and approved for them by their State Assemblies.. The Force will be their own people and not Almajiris from Daura or Niger Republic. 1 Like |

Considering the killings across the country and lack of political will from the presidency to curb the madness it is essential we have state police. It is better to know whom you are dealing with than those whose loyalty lies somewhere else all because of a useless one Nigeria cliché that breeds injustice, unnecessary deaths and insecurity. Necessary state government policies/laws will be put in place with inputs from the people and other stakeholders to make it work as it's done in other climes. 3 Likes |

Sure. Else, you should abolish state legislation, judiciary and executive altogether. Then let's know that we are in a full tyrannic unitary system. It's hypocritical to have the state executive, legislative, and judiciary arms WITHOUT a state law enforcement agency. That's the height of fakery and madness. Okonsyourguy: 3 Likes |

I don't think Nigeria is politically mature enough for state police but with spate of killings, there is no choice. 3 Likes 1 Share |

I would prefer the legislatures add a clause to the bill making police and civil defence a component of the judiciary. Since both maintain order. |

Sincerely,if we are to look at it security challenges in Nigeria today ,there is urgent need of state police....but the question is can all states manage state police in terms of their salary and allowances?? ...And you know the security people, once their salary is a little bit delayed, big problem will arise...They can't be patient as other civil servants in getting their entitlements .... |

Election in Nigeria will be more bloody but come to think of it, there will be less political thugs to be armed for the election. The system is not perfect for it yet but it will catch up. |

For those asking questions about state police, I have some points I would like them to note. 1. State not having state police is an anomaly. Nowhere in the world does a state exist without state police. Therefore, having state police is like correcting the anomaly and returning to sanity. If not, why do we say the governor is the chief security officer? Why will a state exist with law making organ without law enforcement agency? 2. State police is not compulsory. It is for states that have the need and the resources. Other states can still rely on NPF. 3. Two or more states can come together to form a joint police force. 4. The state police will alter the revenue sharing formula between the federal government and the the states in the favour of the states as more responsibility is being laid on them. 5.State governors will have more money to spend as the money they pay to the IGP and the President, in order to be in their good book, will be available for use within the states. 6. The federal government( OBJ, GEJ, PMB) has abused the NPF , using it to intimidate opponents so much that state governors can never catch up with them. 7. The security of the states will be the sole responsibilty of the governor. Someone can relocate from a state with high level of insecurity to another state with high level of security. This can determine where investors will put their money, bringing healthy competition among governors to keep their state secured. 8.The vigilante groups, cults, Fulani herdsmen and other militia groups will disappear, making people to sleep with their two eyes closed. |
