Arsenal: Deeper solves everything for Alex Iwobi

by Andrew Dowdeswell 5 days ago
Follow @a_dowdeswell

Alex Iwobi is attempting to restart his career after seeing it stall since his breakthrough into the Arsenal team two years ago. Trying to play deeper, I believe, solves everything for the young buck.

It was a frustrating World Cup for Alex Iwobi. Entering the competition as one of the faces of a young, exciting, vibrant team that was the talk of the world with its vivacious style and truly ravishing kits, the Arsenal midfielder never quite inherited the mantle of lead creator as was hoped of his prior to the summer.

Nigeria were handed a tough draw. Croatia and Argentina in the same group is never kind, and after losing their first game to the Croats, the Super Eagles were always playing catch up. They could never quite recover.

And for Iwobi individually, the World Cup was a microcosm for his first few seasons as a senior first-team player. Heralded as the hope, bursting onto the scene with effervescence and exuberance, he slowly slid into the shadows, his performances inconsistent, his production lacking, his confidence depleting, eventually dropped from the starting line-up altogether and forced to watch from the unhappy comfort of the sidelines.

So, at 22 years of age and still with time to turn the tide, Iwobi is hoping for a youthful renaissance of sorts, only for it to come at the start of his career, not at the end when it’s too late and his potential has passed him by. And I believe that a position switch — it’s not quite a switch, more a slight alteration of role and responsibility — could solve many of his current problems.

If Iwobi was to slide into a central, deeper position, as a more traditional central midfielder, I believe that it would limit the positions in which his poor end product, his unconvincing finishing and his poor decision-making in the final third are exposed, and accentuate his strengths, his ability to drive with the ball at his feet, his spatial intelligence, his tactical acumen and reading of the game.

In playing in that position, his confidence might also be helped. He would be doing things that are well within his comfort zone, simplifying the game for him with that extra yard of space on the ball, and that would ease his anxieties and unsettled nature that often come through when he plays in more advanced zones.

They may also be more playing opportunities a little deeper. With Jack Wilshere departing, there is only really Aaron Ramsey present as a natural ball-playing, game-driving box-to-box midfielder. There is certainly a chance that Iwobi could be afforded greater time in that position than if he stays to complete higher up the pitch, either out wide or centrally.

At the end of it all, like Nigeria, Iwobi will just have to play better. His talent is still evident, but his production does not match it and, eventually, his managers will, like many of the fans, get tired of waiting for him to deliver. But I do feel that he will be helped to play better by starting deeper. Whether I’ll ever to see it, though, I am a little doubtful.

4 penalties, a tap in and a deflected goal. For a top scorer? What a joke!

www.thesun.co.uk/world-cup-2018/6628154/golden-boot-harry-kane/amp/

3 penalties, 2 headers against Tunisia and a deflected goal against Panama. 2 pks against that same Panama and one against Colombia. A goal issa goal. There is nothing funny about that.
Players should always worry about helping their team win. Lets say your team is 1 goal down with 30 seconds left on the clock, would u tell the referee "please sir, don't give us a penalty we need to score a real goal?". Scoring great goals is a bonus but winning is ultimate and sometimes you have to win ugly or by luck.

Ndidi Enters Arsenal’s Radar

By Editor - July 14, 2018

Leicester City of England midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi could become the next Nigerian player to start for Arsenal of England, as The Gunners are said to be in the hunt for his signature.

Following two sterling seasons with The Foxes, Ndidi has caught rapt attention from far and wide, with latest hints now emerging that he could be on the way to joining fellow-Super Eagles star, lex Iwobi at Emirates Stadium this summer.

The Arsenal link comes at a point Ndidi has not been included in the equation at Leicester, who are reportedly ready to hand Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire new contracts.

Without any mention of reward for Ndidi’s superlative form, The Foxes will offer new big money deals to World Cup stars Maguire and Vardy when they return from Russia.

The England pair are due back next week and Foxes bosses are keen to keep hold of both players.

Leicester want to put Maguire on around £80,000-a-week and Vardy on £120,000 a week as boss Claude Puel aims to strengthen his squad after Riyad Mahrez’s £60million move to Manchester City.

Manchester United are the latest club to show an interest in defender Maguire, who has starred at the World Cup under Gareth Southgate.

However, a top official at King Poweer Stadium insists Ndidi has not been left out of the picture, with a declaration that Leicester are set to try and secure the youngster’s long-term future by rewarding him with a pay rise.

Leicester will be buoyed by Ndidi’s comments that he is happy with where he is and denied that he is contemplating a move elsewhere.

“A transfer has never been on my mind, I feel very good at Leicester,” said Ndidi, whose 15 tackles during the Super Eagles’ three matches at Russia 2018 World Cup are still the joint-second overall at the tournament.

Not true. We have Torreira, Guendouzi and Xhaka who can all play as a DM. Arsenal aren't going for a destroyer

A goal is a goal when judging the result of games but penalties shouldn't count as 1goal when calculating the coefficient to award top scorer in a championship.

Reminds me of those days in the Nigerian league when Okey Odita, a centre back used to get among top scorers with the mandatory 9 penalties every season while the overall top scorer usually finished with 14 goals with about 10 coming from pens.
I think I have made my point though.

No need to argue with you seems you think football is all about goals, when canavaro won the balon d or i guest he is the World Cup highest goal scorer.

Griezman will not win balon d or ,what and see

Cos if Neymar reaches top 15, then Griezmann has all in his favor to be in the top 3 cos he won Europa and now may win the WC!!!!

If he will win the World Cup maybe top 3 but not balon d or,and mind you France got mbappe

So now you guys now value Europa league lol

Who will now will the Balon d'Or as Messi and ororo now go anywhere for this tourney. besides based on UCL and Europa cups, Modric and Griezmann have a bigger slot than these two footballing constants.

I pick Griezmann first sha, then Modric.

The closest to winning the Balon d'Or based on World Cup performance lies with Luka Modric who has clearly been the best player of the competition. Keeping in mind he was part of the Record breaking Real Madrid team and a key player in their triumph.

However, Ororo takes it for me. His match against Spain was the most electric, coupled with his brilliant season with the record breaking Real Madrid team. The bicycle kick comes to mind.

If it is good enough to decide a match then it must be good enough for judging the golden boot. You as a fan can see it however you want but the ultimate mission on a football pitch is to win and you can only win by scoring.

What has Adepoju achieved in his coaching career? You guys have been complaining that NFF is not doing enough to woo Anglo-Nigerian players. This man is doing just that, he has the credentials talking of UEFA liscence and has handled clubsides in Nigeria. Forgiveness you and komekn should be excit d at this. It’s unfortunate this is coming from u.

No they are not and probably don't even know where to start.

He is not coaching them so what does he need a UEFA A grade badge to do.

This is about engagement continous consistent relationship with honesty and openness.

There is no EPL academy without a good percentage of Nigerian origin players.

But across all the leagues you will find Nigerian origin players.

This requires someone who is in England it's not a holiday trip. It's literally a full time job. Without an investment thier is no return.

Ademola Lookman went from Sunday football not even non league semi pro to the EPL in barely three years. How many other players are there like him ❓

Looking for outstanding talent is really uncovering what the mainstream clubs have over looked for whatever reason.

What our guys do is get into relationship with agents and players in academies and really don't do any real legwork. So what become more important is not your performance but your club and agent. That's juat laziness.

Then there are the boys who are in academies who may or may not ever make it to the first team.

Playing in an Academy is mostly indicative not conclusive. Barely 76% of academy players end up playing professional football. That should tell you something.

In reality there are more boys going up to professional football than those who went through the academy route. That's a bewildering statistic.

Building relationships is not an Oga and my boy approach particularly in England, that will not work.

You need someone with genuine passion and a desire to get the best players not the best deal for self interest.

However, maybe I am dreaming is that possible in our country today. To pursue the IDEAL before the deal. You tell me.

Modric has the numbers of influence:

He ranks third in the tournament in touches and fourth in passes completed, leading Croatia in both categories and spending most of his time in the middle third of the field.

He does defensive work, as he’s tied with Kante for most recoveries at this World Cup (48), and no player has won possession more times in the middle third of the field (31).

Modric is also the offensive talisman, with 16 chances created, double the total of any teammate.

I am so impressed with the way Brazil keeps churning out fine breed of players. In the recent World Cup, we had Willian, Coutinho, Neymar, Renato Augusto, Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Marcelo, Douglas Costa and others in the squad.

With all the hype about the Real Madrid wonder kid, Vinicius, there is still RODRYGO who I feel is another special talent emerging from Brazil.

So just like that the world cup is going to end today embarassed

Yes na. And then serious countries start working towards Qatar 2022.

But we here in Africa will spend another one year battling FA crisis and then another one year playing with a care taker coach before finally signing a foreign coach to lead the team during the WCQ.

He comes in with a New philosophy and some new players who are mostly very young, in the name of building a team for the future.

The team manages to qualify but goes into the WC with the "inexperience team" or "Team for the Future" tag. With many players not played together before.

Next thing they struggle at the group stage with only one or at most two team teams from Africa qualifying for the second round and then both will crash out at that stage.

And we come home again and start battling another crisis with sacks here and there. And the cycle continues.

I don't think the set of players and football administrators that can win the WC from Africa have been born yet.

First of all they dont have to be necessarily Nigerian. Black a big YES.

A good understanding and network essential.

But passionate intrinsic to success and with quest to pursue the IDEAL not the deal.

So for instance Ade Akimbiyi, Efan Ekoku, Danny Shittu, former Nigerian internationals. However, none of them will be dictated to with underhand deals in mind.

Prominent public recognition is not needed just passionate honest integrity driven hard work.

You did not answer my question ❓ How can two people walk together unless they are agreed. In the same vein how can you work in the NFF if you want to uphold integrity truth and have zero interest in the deal.
