Very good. They should also require all truck drivers to undergo mandatory yearly 2-weeks retraining and recertification course to drive.
Again, mandatory 5 years experience should become criteria to operate a truck. Any truck driver involved in any accident should have his licence suspended for 1 year at least.

Buhari king of foolš and ignoramuses!

Duty on brand new vehicles is 70% thanks to Medusa-headed certificate-forger Kemi Adeosun, because more tax equals to more money for inflated white elephant projects which equals more money embezzled and diverted to foreign mansions and offshore bank accounts.

Generation of bastards!

Another national tragedy, and as usual those with the greatest number of followers on their social media will retreat to their usual succour of calling on collective prayer for the country. Please continue to pray, God knows we need prayer, but perhaps not for the intercession you may think we need.

On the narrow matter of exploding fuel tankers (of which there have been dozens of incidents over the years, perhaps not catastrophic as the latest incident), the solution is not blindly calling for collective prayer, NO.....as long as we as a nation clamour to pay for fuel below the international production price at our fuel pumps, unfortunately we will continue to experience such accidents.
We blame tanker drivers and owners association of flouting highway rules and using substandard equipment, yet 'we' pay them below the cost of their services.
We want to pay fuel at the same cost in Lagos, Sokoto, Calabar, yet we give tanker drivers and owners a tiny addition to the cost of transportation.
A brand new tanker with all modern safety features will cost in excess of $150,000 each, yet we pay our tanker owners less than $300 a trip from Lagos to Calabar (bearing in mind they come back to Lagos empty).
Of course our tanker owners will use 20 year old rickety Mack Trucks imported from the junk yards of America. How do you expect the tanker owners to maintain these 'dead' trucks?
Factor in the driver has queued in Apapa for a week before loading, has been hassled by all traffic and ticket enforcement from Lagos to Calabar, has no control over driving time and rest time, and perhaps most importantly not a single driver in Nigeria under age of 45 had ever been trained or tested by anything that is comparable to any other decent country.
So if we are calling for collective prayer and our prayer warriors, let’s pray that we can afford to the real price for fuel so tanker drivers can buy brand new trucks, whilst in that prayer please for bus drivers, airline pilots and tricycle owners at the same tim

The article above I posted shortly after the Otedola tradegy, I was roundly criticised. Now the government wants to ban old unroadworthy trucks from being imported. As the article above states every truck owner wants to buy brand new trucks to run his or her business, put how do they recover the cost of the truck or vehicle when we will pay them less than $400 a week to travel to Sokoto or Calabar.

a litre of fuel is over N350 in Ghana - they have not died and they have much better and decent oil tankers. Which the Ghana government does NOT pay for, but private sector will run a good transport services if customers and passengers will pay for it.

We are here in Nigeria decieving ourselves that we are paying N145 a litre

Obviously you are one of those Libyans that came to destroy this country. your write up is filled with greed and selfishness. Please convert that N350 to Ghanian Cedis and tell us how much it is. Besides Ghana is not an oil producing nation, why the comparison??

Some People don't understand haulage vehicles.

These are most trucks and goods moving vehicle that usually causes accident on the road.

For me it is a good move by the government but they should regulate their movement.

dear federal government, haulage equipments age doesn't matter as long as it is being maintained properly and doesn't have any structural defects. major haulage trucks having accident on daily basis are dangote trucks, and he bought them new, but you can count dangote trucks having accident from lagos to portharcourt. dangote haulaging line uses sino trucks, howo, jac trucks and are bought new from China at about 45 million naira per truck, but within 2 to 3 months into operation on nigerian roads it's accident up and down. I will suggest to government to only ban mack trucks and fiat trucks from entering nigeria. they never have good braking system whether it's new or tokunbo. let the importers bring in man diesel, iveco trucks, scania, mercedes benz trucks, steyr, magirus deursk, freight liner trucks and volvo trucks, but they should neat and good ones.
once again all this 1960 models of fiat trucks presently haaulaaging in nigeria ports and roads should all be decommissioned to scrap yard aat owode onirin, cause they are inefficient, time wasting, causes pollution due to obsolete diesel compression combustion ratio in cylinders, not easy to drive etc.
Re: FG Bans Importation Of 10-Year-Old Haulage Vehicles by xandy84: 2:19pm On Jul 19, 2018
Another misplaced law with little or not effect to highway safety. There are Freightliner Conorado manufacturered in 1995 that cost over $40k and still drive on United states road. Age of a truck has little or nothing to do with accident. Lack of maintenance is what cause accident and not age of truck...

The government with its anti-people policies.

In 2020 only the very rich transporters will be able to afford a 2012 Mack or Volvo.

When majority of the Mack trucks are R Models of 10-30yrs old.

This one will not solve the problem, keeping these monsters off the road will do and we can start by fixing our railways and refineries and full decentralization of Lagos ports making the port Harcourt , calabar and all inland ports functional. Unless we do these all other measures is a waste of time.

The Federal Government has placed a ban on importation of haulage vehicles that are 10 years and above old from the date of manufacture. The ban is expected to take effect from 1st of January 2020.

Vanguard learnt that the measure was one of the resolutions of the stakeholders’ forum organised by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, for haulage operators following the recent road traffic inferno on Otedola Bridge in Lagos where over many lives and properties were lost.

The communiqué issued at the end of the meeting directed that mandatory certification of all haulage vehicles will now be carried out twice in 12 months.

According to the communiqué which was signed by Mustapha, the Federal Government will also work closely with the Bank of Industry (BOI) and other financial institutions towards the establishment of a Fleet Acquisition Renewal Scheme for haulage operators.

Other resolution of the meeting was that: “Standard speed limiters must be installed in all haulage vehicles in Nigeria, and that “tankers without safety valves and the required number plates will henceforth be disallowed from loading”.

The meeting also agreed that: Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies should immediately harmonize operating safety requirements at all tank farms”, even as it was agreed that “periodic checks of haulage vehicles must be carried out at relevant loading points”.

The communiqué also stated that, “payment of National Transportation Allowance (NTA) and bridging claims to tanker operators will henceforth be contingent on compliance to minimum safety standards” and that, henceforth “single operators of haulage vehicles must be duly registered with National Association of Road Transport Owners ( NARTO ) and comply with RTSSS provisions”.

And what happen after procurement, won't it deteriorate? Train coaches should be used for haulage and proper use of pipeline be adhered to.

An alternative rout or time for haulage movement will do.

It would not do, it doesn't work like that in many countries. And it wouldn't work in most Nigerian cities because of our poor urban planning. How many Nigerian cities have a ring road that allows access into different sections of the city without going through central residential spaces. Or is it Ikeja that has a fine intertwine between residential , commercial and industrial units.

The primary objective should be safely and then limitations would be put on certain roads based on content and tonnage.
That's how it works in most countries

Neither is Nigeria an oil processing country. We still have to import PMS, Diesel and Kerosene so what are you on about. 150N/ltr is not feasible. Until Dangote opens his oil processing plant and gets it to max operation ed would be in a quagmire

Don't you see your foolish, a none oil producing country NEVER has fuel shortage (Ghana), they don't produce oil and pay commercial prices. Government should remove hand from fuel and allow we, Nigerians control our own markets. Fuel and Food which is more important. Socialist and Communist countries that tried to control food, fuel and other so-called important economic factors failed woefully. China abandoned socialist controlled economy and in 20 years is now competing with America. We are going backward....asking government to feed us.

Go and study basic economics and basic international history and you'll see why oil rich Venezuela is in a mess now
