EsotericMonk:I also stayed off London when I was looking for a job in the UK but still landed in Cambridge, another expensive city, and I don't get the high cost of living allowance and the easy access to plantain, banga and ewedu that our folks in London enjoy. Everything is information, I met a family in London 2 weeks ago, they pay £400 pcm for a 2 bedroom flat around Upton park. They told me of this NHS housing scheme which operates in London. Don't know if you are a NHS worker, if you are then you may want to look that up. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

sutelk: To reside in Doctor or Nurses quarters? |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by sutelk: 4:24pm On Jul 21, 2018 |
Lexusgs430:The place didn't look like a staff quarters, though he pointed out that majority of the residents there were NHS workers, they got in through the NHS housing scheme. While their co tenants not with the NHS paid over £2k pcm. My hospital has staff quarters too but the cost isn't too different from what obtains in town, in fact its more expensive, the only good sides are you don't pay deposits and you live a working distance from work. |

EsotericMonk:Romford is zone six so cheaper than other zones. Anywhere in East London to that side should be cheaper, there is a fast train from Stratford that takes only 8mins to Romford. On the slow train, you are looking at around 18 mins but either ways, with oyster, you are good to go. Properties are cheaper in Essex but you have to factor in travel time. You could look at Harold Wood, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Wickford,Shenfield. These are all outside the London zones. In zones three and four around that end, look around Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes. Mentioned the places where it would be easy to get rail links to Romford. Oh, Upminster too. Good afternoon guys, Landed in the UK safely and picked up our BRP already, thanks to you all for your help. Well appreciated. I'm back again for questions o abeg... 1. What is the process of applying for NI? 2. What is the process of applying for Provisional Drivers License, need to speed this up before winter is here... 3. What are the other important things i need to do pls. Your answers will go a long way.. Many thanks for your usual help |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by sutelk: 3:02pm On Jul 22, 2018 |
Yinkzy03:Welcome. Don't know if this applies to everyone but I didn't apply for NI, mine was at the back of my brp. Check yours. |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Yinkzy03: 3:10pm On Jul 22, 2018 |
sutelk: yeah, that's for the principal applicant, dependants would still have to apply for theirs |

EsotericMonk: I'd add Harold Hill to that list too. Lived there for a bit before relocating back to London. Nice area if I might say so myself. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Yinkzy03: Welcome. 1. Call this number 0800 141 2075 and follow the process from there and also as mentioned in earlier post be careful of answer given to "where was your visa issued?" Answer is Nigeria and BRP was just picked in the UK. A friend got called in to verify his details for this and further delayed the processing 2. You can apply for prov license on gov.uk. Appt booking, theory test and all those things will determine if it will be sorted before winter but if you have a Nigerian license you should be able to drive for a yr on that. You can read up on this on the gov.uk website and also suggest learning to drive before embarking on UK roads and if possible get the theory test done as this will help with understanding dre road rules and regulation. Hope you have sorted out your accommodation because for a lot of this processes *proof of residence* Is key. 2 Likes 1 Share |

fatima04: Thanks a lot @fatima04,i will kick start the process as said in 1&2 above asap. I honestly don't want to go through the route of using a Nigerian Drivers Licence, i don't want want to make a mistake of driving at the opposite direction and risk a jail term, lol and not to talk of the bad driving habits i had picked up over the years. I am yet to sort out accommodation as we are still with family at the moment but i'm hoping i should be able to do the NI & Provisional Drivers License without having to show utility bill/rent receipt in my name (correct me if i'm wrong pls). Many thanks. |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by fatima04: 10:18pm On Jul 22, 2018 |
Yinkzy03: Not too sure for NI but for driving license it's good it's your final/personal home because that's what will be on your license when issued and also when you change house you must always update DVLA about that. Also for the NI, I think a form will be sent for you to fill first and then you send back so if it's not your permanent abode maybe quite difficult ***not too sure about this All in all I will advise sorting out the house first because it will be very key in getting you sorted for a lot of things |

Hello fam, I'm still on the housing hunt. Beautiful houses I saw were somewhat far from my place of employment, thus, I'm still searching for closer locations. Thanks for all your feedback. This is one of the times I wished I had sorted out this driving license thingy. Fatima04 sis I'm booked for theory test in a week's time o. You dropped some tips before but I can't find the page it was on again. If you don't mind, a brother needs all the tips he can get. I no wan go and come back again for am. Everyone is welcomed to chip in ideas. Thanks and cheers. |

if you have used the CD or app, the theory should be a breeze, all the practice question will tell you where you weak subjects are and also practice under normal test conditions...i still weak as people fail this test o. considering the tests they passed for tougher exams 2 Likes 1 Share |

Inkredible: Just download the theory 4 in 1 app and study all the questions well and understand why you miss or get some answers. For the theory part read questions well and answers and the correct answer will jump at you. Practise the hazard perception well and don't be quick to tap. All the best bro. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Good evening, I'm new here and unsure where to ask but noticed you answer people a lot n have been helpful so I thought to ask here. I am relocating soon with my family and I need advise as I've recently been offered a position in London. This is NOT our 1st choice, however, I would b glad to know whether there are reasonably priced locations to settle in or around middlesex and especially an easy commute with opportunities for my husband to work as well. |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 11:34pm On Jul 24, 2018 |
beyondbasicsng: Opportunities are always available, your husband would surely find something to keep him busy. What's his present line of occupation? I am assuming your office is based around middelsex, hence the middlesex pull...... Middlesex covers a wide area + accomodation in middlesex normally requires a Kings ransom.... Have a look on rightmove, to view properties that might shock or amaze you...... Gumtree is also available to view, but shine your eyes..... 2 Likes 1 Share |

@lexusgs430 thank you for your help My husband has MBA from UK uni but hasnt really worked in that line, he currently runs his own business. I also studied in the UK but never had much to do around London except visit. We have looked at right move and as you said, they're quite high, not keen on Gumtree as you know some on there are quite dodgy. Yes, job is in middlesex, We just really want advice on which areas to look at (we have checked watford and they're mostly above £1k. We don't even mind commuting from outside London, but not sure which area is best. |

Please I want to ask a question here hypothetically. If one got married in the UK legally (an EU) , filed and got his working permit. Then suddenly, the couple had a misunderstanding, the woman say she no marry again. Asked the lawyers for her documents, reported to home office then home office fixed a certain date to see the man. What are his chances? All these are hypothetically off course. Thanks |

Depends on how long you've been married for and how long you've been living together in the UK. Defjamb: |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by tennyalad(m): 2:59pm On Jul 25, 2018 |
Best bet is to find something small (a studio or bed flat) within reasonable distance to your place of work for the first 6 months / 1 year and use that time period to familiarise yourself with the area. Once you know the area and things to look out for, you can then proceed to look for something that is a bit more long term and by then your hubby would have started working as well. Don't discount Gumtree, there are good deals on there, be cautious about it and when it's too good to be true, then it certainly is. beyondbasicsng: 1 Like 1 Share |

beyondbasicsng: Renting properties in the UK generally is an expensive undertaking. Have you explored Luton, Derby and slightly further north? I am sure your husband would find a job in his line of work or other. All it would take would be the forms filling and Internet searches. Justwise is an advocate for Gumtree lettings, one's you do your due diligence, you would just be fine...... 1 Like |
