What is the efficiency of a cell
with internal resistance of 3ohms,
when it supplies current to a 7ohms
resistor?

Solution.

The efficiency of a cell can be given by the formula:
Efficiency = External Resistance,R/ Internal Resistance,r + External Resistance,R. x 100%
i.e Efficiency = (R/r + R) x 100%
From the question,
External Resistance,R = 7 ohms .....and
Internal Resistance,r = 3 ohms
Substituting the values in the equation above, we have that:
Efficiency = (7/3 + 7) x 100% = (7/10) x 100% = 0.7 x 100% = 70%

What is the upthrust on a body which displaces

(density of water = 10^3 kgm^-3, density of

g = 10ms^-2)

Solution:
Upthrust = density x volume x acceleration due to gravity(g).

For the body that displaced 0.6m3 of water;
Upthrust = 1000 x 0.6 x 10 = 6000N

For the body that displaced 0.5m3 of methylated spirit;
Upthrust = 800 x 0.5 x 10 = 4000N

The horizontal door of a submarine at a depth of 500m has an area of 0.4m^2.
Calculate the force exerted by the sea water on the door at this depth.
(R.D of seawater = 1.03, atm = 1.01x 10^5Nm^-2, Density of pure water = 1000kgm^-3, g = 10ms^-2)

Solution:
Pressure = Density x g x height
Density of seawater = 1030
.: Pressure = 1030 x 10 x 500m = 5150000 Nm2 .
But,
Pressure = Force/Area.
.: The force exerted by the sea water on the door of area 0.4m3 at a depth of 500m = Pressure x Area = 5150000 x 0.4 = 2060000N = 2.06 x 106 N

let V=rate of breathing per minute. Using the formula: P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2 P1=760mmHg, V1=16 breaths per min, T1=18^oC=(18+273)K=291K, P2=240mmHg, V2=? T2=-5^oC=(-5+273)K=268K. Make V2 the subject of the formula: V2=P1*V1*T2/P2*T1 By substituting the values, we have V2=760*16*268/240*291=46.66 breaths per minute or 47 breaths per minute (approx.)

An object of mass 1kg falls a distance
of 5m onto a horizontal surface and
rebounds to a vertical height of 2m.
Calculate the change in momentum.

Solution.

Initial velocity of the body before falling from a distance of 5m = 0m/s.
Final velocity(V) of the body just before hitting the horizontal surface can be gotten by using the formula:
V2 = u2 + 2gh = 0 + 2 x 10 x 5m = 100.
.: V = squaroot of 100 = 10m/s

Final velocity after the body reached its maximum height on rebound is of course 0m/s......and
Initial velocity(u) with which the body rebounds to a height of 2m can be gotten by the formula:
V2 = u2 - 2gh.
Note the negative sign here because the body is now moving against gravity on rebounding.
Here, V = 0m/s.
.: 0 = u2 - 2gh
- u2 = -2gh
.: u = squareroot of (2 x 10 x 2) = 6.325 m/s

Change in momentum = mv - mu.
If momentum of the object on hitting the floor is positive,it implies that its momentum on moving away from the floor is negative.
Where m = 1kg.....
.: Change in momentum = mv - (- mu) = mv + mu = (1 x 10) + (1 x 6.325) = 16.325 Ns

A man whose mass is 80kg stands on a
spring weighing machine inside an
elevator. What is the reading of the
weighing machine when the elevator is
coming to rest with a retardation of
4.0ms^-2?

Solution.

The apparent weight of the man when the elevator moves up with an acceleration is given by:
W = m(g + a)
But in this question,the elevator is coming to rest(upwards) with a deceleration, -a .
.: the equation becomes:
W = m(g - a).
Substituting the values, we have that:
W = 80 x (10 - 4) = 80 x 6 = 480N or 48 Kg.

A 15.0kg of monkey hangs from a cord
suspended from the ceiling of an elevator.
The cord can withstand a tension of 200N
and breaks as the elevator accelerates.
What was the elevator's minimum accleration
(in magnitude and direction)? g = 10ms^-2

Solution:
Using the formula:
W = m(g + a)
200 = 15 x (10 + a)
200 = 150 + 15a
200 - 150 = 15a
50 = 15a
a = 50/15 = 3.33m/s...in the upward direction.
I think that this should be the maximum not minimum acceleration because above this acceleration(3.33m/s), tension becomes greater than 200;meaning that any acceleration above this will cause the cord to break.

Pure Spectrum

When a triangular prism is used only, an impure spectrum is produced,one in which the colours are indistinct. To produce a pure spectrum; two convex lenses, a triangular prism, a screen and a light source with narrow slit are needed.

An object 0.04m high is placed in front
of and at right angles to the axis of a
concave mirror which has radius of
curvature 0.15m. If a real image 0.12m
high is obtained, determine by scale
drawing or otherwise,
1. the distance of the object from the
mirror
2. how far, and in what direction, must
the object be moved in order to obtain
a virtual image 0.12m high.

An optician uses a plane mirror to help
him. Suppose a patient sits in a chair
2.5m away from him. He views the image
of a chart which faces the mirror and
is located 30cm behind him. How far away
is the chart as viewed from his eyes?

When a resistance R is across a cell, the voltage
across the terminals of the cell is reduced to
two-thirds of its nominal value. The internal
resistance of the cell is?

A cell of internal resistance 2ohms supplies
current to a 6ohms resistor. The efficiency
of the cell is?

A cell of e.m.f 1.5V and internal resistance 2.5ohm
is connected in series with an ammeter of resistance
0.5ohm and a resistor of resistance 7.0ohm. Calculate
the current in the circuit.

The internal resistance of each cell, E1 and E2, connected
in parallel is 2ohms to an ammeter A and a resistor of 4ohms.
Calculate the total current in the circuit.

A work of 3ojoules is done in transferring 5 milliCoulombs
of charge from point B to a point A in an electric field.
The potential difference between B and A is?

The plates of a parallel plate capacitor, 5x10^-3m apart
are maintained at a potential difference of 5x10^4V.
Calculate the magnitude of the
(i) electric field intensity between the plates.
(ii) force on the electron
(iii)acceleration of the electron
(electronic charge = 1.6x10^-19C, mass of electron = 9.1x10^-31kg)

What is the potential energy between two protons of charge q
and at a distance of r apart? (Permittivity of free space = e(knot))
