Substituting the values in the equation above,we have:

2) Since P and Q are identical,it means that they have the same mass. Also,Q moved off with a speed of 2m/s in the original direction of P,meaning that their final velocity after collision is 2m/s.
From the law of conservation of momentum:
( M_p x u_p ) + ( M_q x u_q ) = (M_p + M_q ) x V

From the question,P loses one-third of its initial velocity,which implies 1/3 x u_p .
Substituting the values,we have:
(0.25 x 1/3 x u_p ) + (0.25 x 0) = (0.25 + 0.25) x 2
.: The initial velocity of P = u_p = 12m/s
