Enasdan: Travel history to west African countries doesn't count much though. So i don't see that as an issue. As far as the stamps on your passport are genuine, you don't have problem with that. He should go with the new i20, there is no problem at all with that. He can change school or use same school, there is no law against that. |

You just asked a question which I feel should be answered by yourself here. Why do you want to study computer science? You should know the reason why you want to study CS. The bold is just cracking me up because you don't know why you want to study a course. O ga ooo. Jaked: 1 Like |

Nahum777:The maximum duration of US visa validity a Nigerian citizen can get is two years whether it is for a bachelors degree, masters, PhD, visitation etc. However you can stay in the US legally even after your visa expires as long as you are in status (your SEVIS record is intact and you have not violated the visa) but you must renew it if you come to Nigeria when the visa is not valid. So basically, as far as you have not completed your bachelors degree, you can stay in the US legally. I hope I have answered your question. Have you collected your passport? 3 Likes |

Hello All, I really appreciate the insight on this forum. I will be going for my second interview on 13th August in Lagos. During my first interview, I was just too jittery and I stuttered a lot. The VO asked me what if my sponsor (uncle) chooses not to sponsor me what will I do. I stuttered and said my mom has some savings but the VO asked if I was with my mom's statement (I wasn't). However, I have prepared a proposed transcript for my second appearance and I would appreciate your scrutiny. I am very much open to constructive criticisms. Why MPA (Masters in Public Administration) I was always interested in finance as a child. But when I interacted with career mentors during my teenage years in secondary school, I developed a higher interest in governance, hence my choice of undergraduate study. Political science. But then because I had always loved finance, I enrolled for my professional certification ACCA and decided that I would do a higher degree that would tie the two together for me. An MPA degree achieves this for me. Why ETSU I was particularly interested in schools that offered public administration with a high emphasis on finance. During my search for such schools and their required courses, the MPA degree at ETSU stood out because of the concentration in public financial management. There is also an option for internship or consultancy where I will work at a municipality and get practical experince on goverenance and policy making What will this degree do for you? With this MPA degree, I will be able to evaluate public policies and initiate solutions for the future of Nigeria because I will be equipped with real-life steps in budgeting and risk analysis of public expenditure among others. This, in turn, will help me better contribute to the public policy process of the country. Why USA I chose the US for this degree because I want to be armed with concrete solutions of Nigeria’s future and not just contest and win elections as a politician. It makes sense to me to get knowledge and experience from a system that actually works, the American system. How many schools did you apply to? Two. ETSU and Ohio University Why did you choose ETSU over Ohio University? ETSU has a separate concentration for public financial management. I chose this over the finance integrated courses at Ohio University. I also received a full tuition waiver from ETSU. What have you been doing since you graduated I did my NYSC at a pensions company and I worked as an intern with an investment team that managed over 200 billion naira in pension assets. I understood how with the right regulations in place, it is possible for the Nigerian government to create wealth for future retirees. The more reason for my choice of study. Currently, I work with the finance team as an internal control officer at an IT firm where I ensure adherence to laid down policies and processes. I also conduct audits and recommend changes to policies where necessary Who is paying for your study? I have a full tuition scholarship and my uncle will be paying for my living expenses What does he do? He owns a telecommunications company and partners with MTN, Glo and 9 mobile etc. He also has a chain of laundromats. Why is he sponsoring you? He has been responsible for my education since secondary school. I funded my ACCA certification myself as an undergraduate and when he saw how far I had come and how much further I was willing to go with the public sector, he told me I had all of his support. More importantly, he is looking to establishing a new division at his company that will automate tax collection and management on behalf of the government. I will be an ideal fit for staffing the new division with my MPA and ACCA certifications. Having a team with the right personnel will improve our chances of securing such partnerships with the government. What if he decides to stop sponsoring you? I sincerely doubt that this would ever happen because he has been responsible for my education for many years now. We have both come a long way in my academic pursuit and he is one of the few people that actually cheer me on to bag more degrees. He was highly impressed with my scholarship and I know my living expenses is not difficult for him to handle. What will you do upon graduation? I will return to take up a role at my uncle’s new public-private partnership division. When I gather more industry knowledge, I will finally ease myself into the public service in the long run. What are the graduation requirements for your program? I need 36 credit hours to graduate. I have to complete 18 credits in core MPA courses, 12 credits in my concentration, 3 credits from an internship or consultancy and 3 credits from a management report What courses will you be taking? Public budget and finance Introduction to public administration Quantitative policy analysis for public managers Law and ethics in public service Public sector financial management Risk management Non-profit development Public organization theory Public personnel management One guided elective An internship or consultancy with a municipality Please let me know what questions I may have to prepare for as well. PS: I wrote GRE and Toefl THANK YOU ALL |

I was at the US Embassy Abuja office on Monday 23 Jul, 7.30 am for my visa interview. I guess most interview transcript on NL are in the Lagos office cos things look more structured but time consuming at the Abuja office. You don’t have queues along one VO window; you only have a queue and you get moved to a VO as soon as the VO is done with an applicant. Asides from those close to window 6, which is closer to the queue, no one gets to hear your communication with the VO, except the person is really interested in your matter and paying deep attention. Interview Proper Called to meet the VO at window 8 VO. An older nice white woman. VO: Pass me your passport (I passed it to her), yeah and that form (pointing to my i-20, passed it) VO: You are going to the...Uni of Delaware for your MBA 3P: Yes VO: How many schools did you apply to? 3P: Five schools - UDel, Clark Uni, Southern Methodist Uni, Ohio State Uni, Uni of Rochester VO: Types for about 30 secs, I can see you got funding, do you have paperwork for that (I asked her to repeat while I quickly processed what "paperwork for funding" means). She repeated. 3P: Yes, I do, (while searching for it, she kept typing and asked the next question. VO: What will be your major for the MBA program? 3P: Business Analytics VO: What is your bachelor’s degree? 3P: (While still searching for the letter). It’s Statistics. (Actually, HND in Statistics) VO: What year? 3P: 2012 VO: Did you take GRE? 3P: No, I took the GMAtT VO: Oh the GMAT! What’s your score on the GMAT? 3P: 550 VO: 560? 3P: No, 550, Five Five Zero VO: Are you married 3P: No. (Found the scholarship letter and passed it to her). VO: Without looking at the scholarship letter, what will the MBA do for you? I mean where you want to be in 5 years’ time after your MBA? 3P: I will be done with my MBA in 2 years and I will be back in Nigeria to push for a promotion at my current place of work, that is “IJKL Limited” (A Big Four) and I look forward to joining the D&A team and build the practice with the skills I must have acquired. VO: Will they be holding your position for you? 3P: No they won’t, I will have to make a business case for myself when I am back. VO: (Nods and types, and looks at the i-20 and scholarship letter). You got part-funding, do you have statement to cover up for the rest. 3P: Yes I do VO: Can I see them 3P: Yes (passed to her). I will be funding the program partly, I have a student loan facility from Mpower financing, and my uncle will cover the rest expenses. (Passed all three documents to her, while she checked for like 1 minute). VO: (While looking at the bank statements) This is for you and this one for your parent… 3P: (Cut in) No, my uncle’s VO: Oh Okay! The loan facility covers one year…would you be taking another loan for the second year 3P: Sincerely, I wasn’t prepped for this question…asked her to repeat so I can quickly process... if I should say my uncle will be funding it (which is one option I have) or I should say I will apply for another loan (option 2). There is a third option which is internship organised by the school in the second year. I ended up confirming option 2 to her. VO: Wow, that’s some huge debt! 3P: Smiled, yes I know, but considering what I will get from the US after two years, and career prospects for me thereafter it is worth going for. VO: (Nods) She said somethings I didn’t really hear but the summary is… here we verify bank statement submitted by students, and if found genuine, we will issue you a visa, otherwise, we refuse your visa application and place you on a 10 year ban. Do you understand? 3P: I smiled and nodded VO: In that regard, is there any document here you would like to retrieve? 3P: No VO: Now that I am sure that you are aware of the situation and consequences, I will be placing you on Administrative Processing… she went in, brought a yellow paper (conditions for AP), then a white paper (where to pick up issued Visa)… Then she passed to me. Passed my Scholarship letter to me, passed my i-20, and held on to my passport. Then she said one more paper…she went in and came back with a white slip (showing reminders before departure after visa issuance). She reiterated some information on the slip, and that I will be turned back at the point of entry if I get to the US a day after the day on my I20… So that will be all, we will get back to you. I look forward to the Visa being issued. Account balance for my sponsor is about $55k and just before the interview, my uncle notified me it increased to $97k. I say a big thank you to all the guys who had shared their transcripts, comments, criticisms, opinions and thoughts here, I really learnt a lot from ya’all. But three days on AP now… How long does this thing take? 15 Likes 1 Share |
