She was sobbing dejectedly sitting in one of the sofas in the large sitting room. The tension in the room could be felt from beyond. Richard’s mum was seated beside her rocking her gentle while his dad was directly opposite fuming with anger. After narrating everything coupled with how Richard advised her for an abortion to which she bluntly refused, she had drawn all the sympathy she needed and the odds automatically shifted to her side.

“How many months gone?” Richards mum asked drawing her closer to rest on her shoulder.

“Four months ma,” she replied sobbing lightly.

“Why didn’t you come open with this all these while?” she continued.

“I wa….wa,” she stammered breaking down again.

“Shsssh, its ok, it’s going to be fine.”

“I was ashamed, I was embarrassed and ashamed of myself.” She cried.

“I know, you should be but that notwithstanding, you should have reached out to us.”

“I wanted Richard to do the right thing; I didn’t want to pressure him.”

“Is Rosemary aware of this?” Richard’s Dad asked looking squarely at her.

She cringed in fear avoiding the old man’s gaze.

“Is she?”

She nodded in affirmation sniffing into the handkerchief.

“She doesn’t deserve this kind of betrayal from the both of you; she doesn’t. She is too good for this.” He said standing to pace the length of the room.

“Darling it’s ok, we will get this whole thing sorted out.” Richard’s much intervened looking at her husband.



David

He was deep in thought as he drove through the gate into his father’s large compound. He couldn’t understand the urgency of the call which was unlike his father. He hardly sounds urgent on the phone.

Stepping out from his car, he strengthened himself before making his way to the main entrance. He was halfway on the stairs when a car caught his eyes. He stopped on his track and took some steps down taking a good look at the car again.

“Nonye?” he murmured as his mind skipped.

“No, it can’t be” he said audible taking a closer look but his doubts were cleared as he read her plate.

“Shit” he cursed feeling frustrated. He let his hands fall in resignation not knowing what to do. The moment that he dreaded is here.

He was still with his thought when the entrance of a car into the compound jolted him out of his memory. He stood stunned watching as the car parked and Rosemary stepped out. She was looking breathtaking though he noticed that she lost a little weight. He watched the lady who was oblivious of his presence walk majestically towards the door. He doesn’t know what’s going on but whatever it is, he needed to talk to her before she walks into the house. Taking a deep breath, he walked towards her.

As she walked towards the main entrance she looked around the compound that once served as a safe abode to her. She always felt safe each time she was there. Aside the little changes she observed, everything was the same. She had her shades on which protected her eyes from the rays of the sun. She was close to the stairs when she noticed a figure approaching her. She turned and there was Richard. She stiffened but regained herself in time.

“Hi,” she said pulling away her shades to look him in the eyes. She tried to force a smile but it was harder than she thought.

“Hi, Rose what are you doing here?” he asked tensed.

“Daddy called and requested to see me. Is everything ok?” she asked with an expressionless countenance.

“Uhmmm, I don’t know, I just got here myself.” He shrugged trying to hold her gaze.

“That looks like your girlfriend’s car, is she here too?” she asked enjoying her little pettiness inwardly with smiles perched at the corners of her lips.

He looked at the car and turned to Rose without saying anything. “She is not my,” he started but stopped midway and moved to hold her hand.

“Don’t dare.” She cautioned abruptly leaving him shocked as he withdrew sharply.

“Rose please! I know…..”

“I think we need to go in and find out why we are here.” She concluded heading up the stairs leaving him behind.



Lydia

She walked skeptically into the compound which she once lived in. She could see the little changes that have been made but it still reminded her of the beautiful moments she had before she left. She was nervous as she made his way towards David’s apartment. She wasn’t sure if he was around but if he wasn’t, she will wait.

She has been thinking of how best to get back into his life. Every strategy she comes up with seemed not good enough and every time she talked to Nickie about it, she seemed to be a wet blanket to her plans so she stopped confiding in her and decided to take the bull by the horn.


David

He came out from the bathroom to a knock on his door. He wasn’t expecting anybody and with the way Rose left he wasn’t expecting her back soon. Dapping his hair with his towel before wrapping it around his unclothedness he walked towards the door to check who the visitor is.
Getting to the door he stopped abruptly and stared at Lydia through the door net. She was the last person she expected at his door and there she was holding his gaze.

She held her breath as she appeared behind the door net clad in his bath towel. He looked fresh and new. The whole plan she had set in her head disappeared on sighting him.

“Lydia?” He called regaining his composure. “Come in” he unlocked and held the door open while she walked in stiffly avoiding his eyes and body contact.

Walking into the apartment she looked around and as usual the room looked so neat and kept. She always loved that about him; always tidy.

“Give me a minute to change” he said jolting her mind.

“Hmm?....o .. ok” he replied as David left with his briefs to change in the bathroom.

“So how are you?” he asked coming out from the bathroom. “Sorry I have not been able to call all these while, I have been kinda busy.”

“David it’s ok. I understand, not like I was expecting that much from you after everything.”

“So I see you have recovered fully, thank God.”

She shrugged and nodded looking into the space as silence fell over the room. The silence lasted for a while before David broke it.

“Sorry, pardon my manners. What do I offer you?” he asked.

“Nothing, I am fine.”

“Ok if you insist, so to what do I owe this visit?” he asked smiling to lighten the mood.

She smiled nervously looking everywhere around the room except where David sat. Suddenly her countenance changed as she looked at the table where Rose’s handbag was place. David was observant enough to follow her trail. She wasn’t clever enough to hide the feeling as it became obvious. She stared at it for a moment before dragging her eyes off it.

“Are you ok?” David asked.

She stayed mute for a while before looking up to assuage the hot tears pushing hard before her eyes. She nodded but holding back the trickles of tears wasn’t successful as a few escaped her eyes. She reached into her bag, pulled out her handkerchief and dapped her eyes but before she could return it the tears flowed uncontrollably as she sobbed quietly taking David unawares.

The silence over the room was heavy as every one of them was with their thoughts. All the while it was Richard’s Dad unleashing his anger and disappointment over his son and Nonye. Richard’s mum who practically didn’t know whose side to be on interfered intermittently; mostly when Nonye breaks down to tears.

Richard was quite as his father lampooned him while Rose sat quietly hoping the whole thing ends already so that she could go back to David.
Richard made to speak but his dad cut him off abruptly.

“Shut up. I don’t want to hear a damn word from your mouth.” He barked angrily fuming. That had ushered in another dead silence.



Rose

“Daddy, Mummy” Rose started breaking through the silence. “I am sorry that we disappointed you like this. I know, what is done is done and we can’t undo it, the only thing left for us to do is the right thing. Two wrongs can never make a right,” she paused surprised that the tears weren’t coming already. “I have forgiven them and I hope you will too. Humans are infallible lets not forget that. That said, I will like to formally end everything between Richard and myself.” She pulled out her engagement ring from her pause and walked towards Richard placing it on the side stool beside him. Richard reached out to hold her hand but she pulled away abruptly but he was up before she could take some steps back.

“Rose! Please don’t do this.” He pleaded going on his knees while forcefully holding her back. “I know I messed up but please we can make this work. Rose please. Mummy Daddy please talk to her please. Rosemary please don’t do this to us.”

While he sang his apologies she was busy fighting back her tears. She didn’t want to break down before them. That moment hurts but she wanted to walk away from there without tears but he was making it hard for them. Forcing a smile, she suppressed the lump on her throat and turned to him.

“ Let go of my hand” she murmured glaring at him while trying to force her hand out from his. “You got what you wanted.”

Everyone watched the drama going on without words. Dragging her hand away from his she walked towards Richards dad and genuflected before doing same to the mum after which she looked down at Nonye for some second before heading towards the door leaving Richard on the floor crying like a baby. As she walked down the stairs she noticed some hurried footsteps behind her and turned to see Richard on her heels.

“Rose please, lets talk about this please. I can’t let you go.. You mean the world to me please.” he sang behind her.

“Don’t make this harder than its already.” She turned and gave him the coldest stare he ever had. The look alone stopped him on his track while she jumped into her car before letting the built up tears lose.
