The Lagos State Government has announced plans to engage some religious leaders, including pastors and imams, and place them on a salary structure.

This is a way of carrying out reorientation of the citizenry to shun corruption and immorality.

The development was made public by the Lagos State commissioner for home affairs, Abdulhakeem Abdulateef, during a sensitization programme for imams and scholars across the state, on Thursday, July 26, Daily Trust reports.

The commissioner disclosed that the state government would continue to interact with religious leaders, and tasked them to be above board and encourage their followers to shun corruption.

He said: “We shall be willing to even engage many of them by making provision for their salaries so that they can assist government to re-orientate the people for good.

“Imams and Pastors are believed to be men of God. So we need all of you to help us to encourage the right values in the society; particularly in the area of accountability and anti-corruption.

“We must remember that the Almighty Allah will ask all of us to render account of our deeds in the hereafter. So, the Imams and other religious clerics should lead us in the right direction because they are our leaders.

In a sane society, the monetary incentives will be rejected by the Religious leaders and they will still preach against immorality and corruption and do their work for God

Immorality is on the increase.. And has never been the African way.. it is an imported disease that has messed up girls and boys.. many living with incurable diseases, reaping the fruit of careless living..

There is great need for awareness especially to our young people and kids.. Kudos lagos!

Since they're paid, these pastors and Imams would be APC Pastors and Imams.

Don't be surprised if your Imam or pastor start reading from The Book of Tinubu chapter 4 verse 419.

He who pays the piper pastor dictates the tune.

Until we realise that we can't use religion to fix a country we won't move forward. Is this how advanced countries deal with corruption? We have enough churches and mosques that preach against such and nothing has changed yet you still want to pay Pastors and Imam to do what you as a government has failed to do. How did we get here sef

Why do people gather in churches and mosques on Sundays and Fridays?

What are their contribution to society for providing the environment for them to thrive without being taxed? sad sad

You can't pay a man of God to teach the gospel, if it is truly his calling then he has an obligation to preach and win souls. This is wrong on so many levels and if there is still hope left for the gospel in Nigeria, the men of God should turn it down and instead advise governor Ambode to instead create a youth empowerment SME initiative with the money he intends to give the pastors. Some of these youths that go down the path of yahoo boys or "runs girls" do so not because of a lack of moral inclination or a lack of moral doctrine or teaching (as some would say who morality epp?) rather they do so due to failed government policies and very limited opportunities in the job market, empower some of these youths and watch them turn into self sufficient and self reliant entrepreneurs! The Nigerian problem is not a morality problem, it is rather a problem of poor investment in the capacity of our population and man power.

Preaching against immorality is supposed to be part of the message of religious leaders. The Holy Books frown at it and admonishes the clergy to speak against it. How then should they be paid for doing their work?
It's just like me being paid extra incentives to treat patients, when that is what is expected of me.
Granted that many fake clergy don't find it attractive to speak against immorality cos they would loose clients members, but what business does the state government have in giving them monetary incentive to do so? The state licenses religious organizations, a simple law compelling all religious leaders to devote a Sunday /friday to speaking against immorality is sufficient.

I want to believe that this information is fake. If true, then there is something definitely wrong with our leaders, properly so called. Are the mosques and churches now taxable? Some, if not all of these imams and Pastors, are part-time jobs. By the way, do they need to be paid to teach moral?
