Given our history, the dismal state of affairs everywhere in the country, and the propensity of the Nigerian mind to play the blame game, we can't feign surprise that some individuals resort to tribalism and bigotry at the slightest opportunity. There are bigots from all across Nigeria. This isn't news. As always though, I am concerned by patterns which I will leave you to discern for yourselves from two threads below. The subject of the more recent thread is a disaster in the South-Western part of the country. After noticing the usual responses, I went searching for the most recent thread on a similarly negative report from the East. In each case, please determine for yourself: i. The rapidity with which the discourse degenerated into tribe-bashing. ii. The number of likes for overtly bigoted or tribalistic comments from various tribes. iii. "Who started it" The threads: 1. https://www.nairaland.com/4645844/oau-students-trapped-following-downpour 2. https://www.nairaland.com/4644788/deplorable-state-school-enugu-despite Edit: my attention has been drawn to the existence of an older thread on flooding in Onitsha. Even though it is clear that tribalistic posts on that thread were less popular (if we go by the metric of likes), its existence does detract somewhat from my initial argument, and may render whatever follows a pissing contest. Considering the above, I'm editting my initial call (if you're curious, I'm sure it lives on through respondents who quoted me ). I'm now challenging intelligent Yorubas and Igbos to please take a more vocal stance against overt tribalism from their kinsmen. The Igbos should caution their kinsmen, and the Yorubas should likewise call theirs to order. There is nothing funny about tribalism. It may make for witty or snarky quotes, but the hatred it feeds is real. *** If you are going to contribute on this thread, please keep the language civil. Thank you. 5 Likes |

If i could just say one thing in response to the Op, it will be: Igbos are not to be taken very seriously. They have huge inferiority complex issues nobody can remedy in Nigeria. You would do well to ignore them because you cannot stop them from hating others. That is who they are. OP, Igbos will frustrate you with more hate than you ever imagined. They are built to hate, forget about their insults jareeeee. They will roll into this thread with waves of insults like a tsunami and completely destroy your thread. Igbos are easily the most hateful people in Nigeria. But other than that, they are largely harmless. Its better you do something better with your time than try to reason with igbos oooo. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

Mr. Man shut up! You're just pained. Afonjas insult Flatscreens on every drug trafficking post made & Flat sole slippers also insult Afonjas on every cyberfraud/skull mining thread here. Stop pushing it to one tribe you cone-headed sophisticated mor0n. Ab0kis have their own fair share on paedophilic & senseless murder threads too. Last night own pain you die. Be a real man - stop allowing your emotions to overpower you. Good day. 27 Likes 2 Shares |

you started well but messed it up with this statement "It is even more surprising that Ndi'gbo appear more willing than others to fan the embers of hatred given the balance of Igbo investments within, versus outside the East" is that supposed to be a threat or what? 23 Likes 2 Shares |

Original Poster,if you are a sincere person and not a two-faced hypocrite, you would have noticed that Yorubas are equaling guilty of what you accuse Igbos of..even worse. Every single person who says anything against buhari,Osibanjo or APC is tagged Igbo with subsequent insults on Igbos.. Perhaps you were in coma during and after the just concluded Ekiti State elections that is why you failed to see the tsunami of insults your yoruba kith and kins heaped on Igbos..Countless posters from other tribes who supported Fayose and PDP were tagged Igbos and insulted as such.. You should therefore stop whinning and complaining...You either caution everyone including your Yoruba kins as well or keep quiet.. Being hypocritical will only make a bad situation worse. 29 Likes 4 Shares |

I will overlook abuses if I deem the poster's IQ to be lower than I can work with. For those acusing me of hypocrisy, it's a fair accusation. In response, I need you to do something for me. Pick 10 examples of threads that became war zones in terms of tribe-bashing. Use the three metrics I suggested above (the questions) to assess them. If, after that exercise, you still feel I am a hypocrite, I will respond more directly tp the allegation. 7 Likes |

proffemi: OP, please leave them alone. You can never dissuade them from hating other Nigerians—especially yorubas. You should know that by now if you have been a long time member of this forum. You cannot beat then igbos when it comes to hate, you will only be wasting your own time. You better ignore them. You can see how they have destroyed your thread? They roll in with waves of insults like a tsunami and completely destroy every thread. They are easily the most hateful people in Nigeria. But other than that, they are largely harmless. Ziggylady: I assure you that I would have done this if I felt they are the more guilty party. My data data over time suggests otherwise. I know, and have met with smarter ndi'gbo than have commented so far. So if they visit and provide evidence to the contrary, I will be happy to speak to my own kinsmen too. BTW , I have on occasion challenged Yoruba bigots. Can you say you have done the same to Igbo bigots?? 4 Likes |

Ziggylady: I have given up on replying igbo insults long ago. Haven’t you noticed? On the issue of my being pro Christian, anti Buhari, that is who I am and nobody—not even my own Yoruba brothers on NL—can box me in. So I would advice you to refrain from doing so. I blame the OP for trying to do what we have failed for almost 7 years. Who can have reasonable conversations with igbos when it come to the issue of their tribe without being excoriated? The OP has time ooo. Men have moved on to other things jaree. 4 Likes |

I think the insults will forever be between the Igbos and Yorubas until this contraption splits.... We cannot pretend there's lots of love... It's as simple as the desire to phuck...We hate each other and see each one as bitter rivals. And it got worse with the arrival of Nnamdi kanu To the scene and the subsequent "Awoke" of the igbo consciousness... Igbos are now woke so to speak and see the Yoruba's as the devils puppetering the Hausas And the general political space The Hausa is really the main puppeteer... Anyway I tell you, once we split... Relations will improve. 12 Likes 1 Share |

nijabazaar: This is exactly the point. And that’s why i blame the OP for even trying to talk sense into igbos. Igbos will continue hating Yorubas till eternity. An entire generation of igbos were raised to see Yorubas as enemies. I have long stopped trying to reply igbo insults. I advice the OP to do same. Let’s face Fulani and Buhari. 3 Likes |

proffemi: Au contraire, you're the one that comes out of this with egg on your face! Your initial post is nothing more than the subjective rantings of a deranged, hypocritical paranoid-schizo! He was only letting know this fact! How about you set the ball rolling by getting 'facts and data' on the bigotry of your own ethnic group towards Ndigbo? Or maybe you wanna posit that it's a one-way thing and that your people are innocent victims in all this? 13 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Ndi'gbo and Yoruba Thought Leaders On Nairaland, Please Rein In Your Kinsmen by proffemi: 11:11am On Jul 30, 2018 |
Point of correction. We don't hate each other. We're different. Absolutely. Some Igbos hate some yorubas and vice versa. Definitely. But NEVER swallow the narrative of wholesale hatred between Yorubas and Igbos. For every example of hatred, I bet you know dozens of examples of peaceful, harmonious inter-tribal marriage and productive cooperation. This hints at the very point of this thread. If you repeat something long enough, people start believing it. Yhe more we allow tribalistic posts to become the norm here, the more people accept the doctrine of wholesale hate. 2 Likes |
